Jackpot!!

I was so pleasantly surprised by this book!

Finally, FINALLY someone has made the effort to truly dig in to the actual documented history of some of the "known haunted" places in Illinois. Micheal Kleen has proven that the ghost stories, legend tripping, and haunted-tours-by-armchair can still be fascinating and creepy when told with the facts instead of only the melodramatic folktales. While other books by some other authors are definitely as entertaining, they are truly fiction and serve only to propagate incorrect information.

And, even better - while pointing out some of these discrepancies, Mr. Kleen remains professional and does not throw anyone under a bus when talking about things others have written. All he does is clarify.

The places he writes about are still creepy, still fascinating, and still great to read...he just takes the time to throw in that much-needed dash of historical accuracy that is quite often missing in books like this. For me, a big part of the fun of books like this is the history of the locations, so this is a very refreshing find.

I plan on buying up a number of his other books as soon as possible!

Great author really presents a field guide for IL haunts

Hi,

I just wanted to say that Mike Kleen's book is a stupendous example of what a perfect road guide to IL haunts is. Honestly, I am going out this summer road tripping and hitting the spots Mike writes about. He did a magnificent job on the descriptions of each haunt and really researches the sites personally. Congratulations on this one Mike. It's a must have for pro hunters or novice.

It's like all the others

This is pretty much like all the other paranormal places in the U.S. It's not better or worse than the others in this genre. I was hoping for something I had not heard of before, especially if it was close to my location. Evidently not much goes on in Southern Illinois.

Best book on concrete art

At first I wasn't impressed with this book but it has become the "go to" in my studio. It deals mainly with concrete tiles. There is a wealth of information here that you cant find in other books. This book is well written and the best book on the market for those interested in concrete as art.

All types of concrete tiles, but other concrete objects are also included: vases, bowls, planters, garden furniture, candlesticks, bookends, etc. Emphasis is on smaller objects and various methods of color work. As the reprint title suggests, the designs shown are Arts & Crafts or perhaps art deco.

Looks like the instructions are clear, but I haven't tried any of the projects yet. Don't know if all the materials would be available; if not, there are probably modern substitutes.

Editors Needed!

The material given in this book is worthwhile, with some very interesting chapters. However, more time in the editing room may have made this an outstanding publication. I was surprised at some of the downright incorrect information, upside down pictures, very poor sentence structure, cut and paste photo captions from the text, and weakly paraphrased sections from the aircraft manuals. Sometimes, the book was just plain hard to read for all of its editorial foibles, made even more surprising from a Schiffer publication.

A lot of material, poorly presented

Wiliam Wolf's "Boeing B-29 Superfortress" is awash in detail covering every aspect of the bomber from earliest development to the final missions at the end of WWII in the Pacific.

That said, the book was a great disappointment to me. The author has clearly researched every detail of the bomber's history and has an impressive bibliography at the end of the book. Nevertheless, the entire presentation seems amaturish. The book badly needs an editor. The text, often parphrased from or quoted from manuals and government publications of the day is sometimes repetitive. Occasionally, directions to the printer to insert pictures in particular locations are left in.

Perhaps the biggest problem with the book is the illustrations and photographs. The graphic content is crucial for a book like this; every reader wants to see the wealth of pictoral detail the author tries to present. Unfortunately, most of the black and white photos and reproductions of drawings and charts are muddy and indistict. Even worse, while the author was allowed complete access to the B-29 in the collection of the Pima Air Museum, he failed to engage a professional photographer or even to learn basic lighting techniques himself. The result is that nearly all the color pictures of the B-29 interior and exterior details are glaringly lighted by the single flash on his camera, leaving some detail washed out and over-exposed and other components lost in shadow. A simple bounce flash or two-flash technique would have produced much better results. A couple of pictures are even blurry because of camera movement or poor focus. Picture captions, usually used to impart information that supplements the text of a book and to describe some unique features of the illustration, are, in this book, simply a sentence or two lifted from the nearby text without modification.

In a history and reference book such as this, a comprehensive index is essential. The index in this book is scanty.

Anyone with an interest in the B-29 will want to read this book. Because of its poor quality, I suggest borrowing a copy or buying it used.

Great Material - Poor Production

While the author has previously criticized another reviewer for pointing out that the photographs, both modern and contemporary, are of poor quality, I have to add my voice to the fact that somewhere, either in pre-production or at the press, someone let Dr. Wolf down.

Dr. Wolf in my opinion, demonstrates mastery of the topic and his access to a very wide range of materials. I think the text is fine and while we can all use the services of an accomplished editor, one will find many books, even those published by major houses, full of issues that an experienced editor will have corrected.

I was most disappointed by the quality of the black and white photographic reproductions in the book. Something in the production workflow had to have gone awry as these photos end up blurred, murky and with poor contrast. Modern photo pre-production allows even the most damaged or compromised original to be enhanced and photos that I believe have appeared elsewhere in perfectly fine order are here not what one expects. Whatever the cause, it is a legitimate criticism of the finished product.

That all said, if you are looking to round out your technical information on this aircraft or are looking for a complete discussion of the development and deployment of one of the most complex aircraft up to that time, then this is the book for you.

About the Author
Since sewing her clothes as a teenager and earning a college degree as a Home Economics teacher, Mary Ann Schmidt has continuously worked with textiles. Being married to a geologist, who traveled extensively, provided Mary Ann with quilting contacts from a variety of places and cultures. She connected with the Colorado Quilting Council and the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum soon after moving there from the Midwest. While living in a community outside of Denver, she worked at a volunteer fire department and drove an ambulance. This led to the opening of her business, Thread Bear Co., and the beginning of the quilting group, the Mountain Mavericks, which meets weekly in her home.

Excellent Coffee Table book

This delightful book is definitely high quality with outstanding pictures on glossy paper, with the hard front and back covers which are with pictures identical to that of the dust jacket. The book will be a classic and definitely a conversation piece on the coffee table in any home whether or not a person quilts. The only thing which would improve the book is if the print were of a color for more contrast with the page color for ease in reading.

I wasn't wowed by this book. I expected more since the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum is, in my humble opinion, one of the finest little jewels in the quilt museum world and I assumed there would be greater emphasis on their collection.. Nevertheless, it has a place in my quilt history book library

Excellent source of the V-2 rocket

Everything about this book is wonderful. From the illustrations to the history of this remarkable pre-ICBM, the author clearly has done his homework. It is a remarkable history. From its conception, production and launchings, this book tells it all. As with most histories of Germany, the book also discusses the mass deaths of the forced workers building the V-2 and eventual mass importation of many German scientists under Project Paperclip after WW II.

If you are also a "weaponsophilic" person like me, do not hesitate to purchase this book. It is well worth it.

This book is a wonderful extraordinary follow-up to Roaring 20's Fashion: Jazz. The photos and clothes are out of this world! The historical overviews are very well done, and give the clothes and vintage photos a context relevant to the times that they were worn! BRAVO!!!!!

A Roaring (20s) Good Book!

I loved Ms. Langley's vintage hat book so well I was amost afraid to be disappointed by her new books on the Roaring 20s - I shouldn't have been. She truly surpassed herself with books that transcend the category of collecter's books. Yes, this book is organized and comprehensive. The clothes are fabulous and the photos of them due them justice. The fashion plates and advertisements are beautiful and greatly entertaining enhancements placing the clothing in context of the times. I must admit my favorite part of the book is the vintage photographs which along with the loving and witty narrative breathe a life and tenderness into this book that raises it far above a collector's guide.

This book is much more than an identification guide for doll clothes. It is also a time machine to the 1970s, and a light-hearted social commentary on how the doll clothes of that era reflected our culture at the time. The author has a charming sense of humor paired with a quirky taste in fashion. I found myself laughing out loud several times while reading this book. Haute Couture Doll Fashions, 1970s is a refreshing change from the dry doll ID guides on my book shelf. In fact, it hasn't even been placed on my book shelf yet. I have been delightedly thumbing through it ever since I got it, and urging my 30-something doll collecting friends, "You have to read this book!"

A Must Have Addition To Your Doll Library - For Pleasure and For Reference

As an avid doll collector, as well as dealer and appraiser, I read every new doll-related book that comes out. Very few turn out to be keepers. This book, however, is a genuine "Must Have". I've added it to my top 10 list of essential fashion doll books for collectors. It's loaded with photos of a huge variety of NRFB doll fashions from the 1970s. You won't find these anywhere else! Plus, it's a fun read, especially for those of us of "a certain age" who remember actually wearing life-sized versions of these outfits. What were we thinking? I highly recommend this book.
