Super "how-to" book on stripwood boat building

Susan's books on stipwood boat building are the best I've read. She takes you through the entire process step-by-step with lots of sound advice and many pictures. In this, her second book on the subject, she takes the reader through the steps in building two classy looking row boats. The processes she describes are equally applicable to other row boat designs such as the Whitehall Pulling Boat I am currently building. To be sure, I probably would not have tackled this seemingly difficult project without her excellent guidance as contained in this work. I have not been disappointed with this book or her previous book on canoe stripwood construction. If you are thinking of building such a craft, these are the books to buy.

The Holy Grail: 10 Stars!

Its all in the title. No other book on strip building that I have seen (of the many) begins to compare with this volume; it is spectacular! There is a mountain of material available on creating a strip-built hull, but scant little on the difficult woodwork needed to finish one, e.g. building and installing gunwales, etc. This book changes all that. The photos with excellently-written descriptions of the processes depicted are plentiful and invaluable, especially in light of them being used to describe two separate possibilities: (1) the steps to complete a narrow hull (the pulling boat, Liz) as a whole and, (2) similar steps to complete a wider hull (the Rangeley Lake rowing boat) in two halves, similar but different methods, both covered in detail. The author adds a lot of detailed tips on the epoxying process which, if there is one potential point of unrecoverable failure in building a hull, careless epoxying is it. And, at long last, a builder that explains lofting as the fairly simple process it is as opposed to comparing it to neurosurgery or the like and scaring off nearly every potential builder new to it. I know people who made decisions on buying plans strictly on whether or not lofting is required. The boats used to demonstrate the steps aren't your run of the mill "two sheets of plywood and a weekend between you and your 8' pram" designs, but beautifully-detailed, yet doable, projects that, if you're willing to take your time, build carefully, and take it as a labor of love, will reward you with awe-inspiring results that will allow you to seriously claim to be a boat builder. I am so impressed with this book, I could go on and on, but you get the picture. Being able to "Look Inside This Book" (especially the Table of Contents) would probably increase sales.

This has to be the best book on the subject I have seen!
In saying this it still lacks in technical drawings and explanations.
This publication excels in photograhic splenduer and the sheer quality of manuscript production, it is a magnificent publication and the actual full glossy pages are easy to see and read. If a picture tells a thousand words, this book would be a million pages without them!
The author knows the subject absaloutely and concisley, and demonstrates all techniques she discusses with exactness.

This is one of the best and most complete Youth Resources I have had the pleasure of using. The best feature is that it comes with a cd that puts everything at your finger tips and printable. I highly recommend it to anyone who works with teens.

Wow! What an awesome resource

I was already excited about getting this set of books even before they arrived and was a little afraid that I had just bought into the hype. Fortunately, when the books and CD arrived I was not disappointed. There is an amazing set of resources contained in the three books (and also all on the cd). I don't normally like canned lessons, but this stuff gives enough flexibility and alternatives that it really doesn't seem all that canned. I would definately recommend this for any youth ministry.

A great resource for your ministry!

I am generally "Anti-curriculum" when it comes to planning lessons, just because I have found few that aren't dorky or overly complicated.

I am very pleased with these books and software though! There is just a ton of resources here to pick and choose from, in varied formats, covering just about any topic you might be teaching on. I kind of like flipping through the books, but the software is well organized and easy to use too. Well worth the price.

Good reference with a couple faults

The photography in this book is marvelous. I did think the repeated images on pages 82 - 85 rather odd. I would have preferred much larger single images. I felt like it was wasting page space to do that. There are other pages that have blank areas that could have been filled with larger pictures.

There is one fault in this book that gives me pause: On page 202 is pictured an egg shaped latticino paperweight with scattered millefiori. That paperweight is not Fratelli Toso. It's a Chinese imitation. Fratelli's eggs have a different profile being more bullet shaped and less 'eggy.' The canes in that paperweight are very commonly found in Chinese paperweights, the spade cane being the most distinctive.

If I knew what I know now about the book, I still would have bought it. The photos of the murrine vases make the book worth it to me.

colorful guesswork

I bought this book because I am interested in Murano glass paperweights, many of which were made by Fratelli Toso, and this book has a chapter on paperweights. The problem is that this books is practically useless in identifying Fratelli Toso paperweights. The paperweight chapter has 17 pages with pictures of glass paperweight with little information about which ones are Fratelli Toso and which ones are not, other than the few with Fratelli Toso labels. The first two pages show catalog pages from an importing company from the 1960s. The best information offered, with no foundation or explanation, is that these paperweights are "mostly, perhaps all, by Fratelli Toso." Really? Is that the best you can offer? There were dozens of glass companies operating in Murano at the time. Why would the importer limit itself to one company? Most of the other pictures of paperweights in the book have no information - just a photo. Some say "probably by Fratelli Toso" but most say nothing. For most of the paperweights in this book, identification is apparently little more than a guess. The chapter on paperweights may as well be called "Paperweights that might have been made by Fratelli Toso." Maybe, maybe not. I returned my copy.

This is a very specialized work. If you want to understand how Byelorussians and Ukrainians came to be members of the Waffen SS, this book will explain it. Many or most of those enrolled did so because of opposition to the Communist government and Bolshevism. They were often not very interested in furthering Nazi ideas about a "Greater German Reich". This work also recounts an overview of many of the anti-partisan and other military actions in which the Russian SS took part. The fate of these units and their personnel is also covered.

The bikinis they wore were often of Bunny's own creation, sewn with her own hands. She says, My ability helped me sell photographs to men's magazines and compete with male photographers. They didn't know how to sew! Many of her original designs still influence styles today. This book is not a preaching manual or a homiletics textbook. Get "Christ-Centered Preaching" by Brian Chappell if that is what you are looking for. Instead, it is a reminder that God uses a variety of people and a variety of styles to advance His Kingdom. When I first started out preaching ten years ago, I spent a lot of time trying to sound like other preachers. This book shows us that it is pointless to do so and ultimately unnecessary. God can use the communication style He created in us to begin with.

These communicators have just a few things in common: they love God and work diligently to make Him known. Their styles, however, couldn't be more different and that is ultimately very encouraging. Drop the cash on this one. It's a winner.

Until I read this book, I thought my speaking style was random and weird and that I should probably work on changing it.

What I discovered through reading 'Refining your Style' is that my style is a God given gift. It's the unique way he has given me to communicate.

I do need to refine it some and work toward perfecting it but, when it all boils down to it, it's my style and I should be proud of it as a gift from God!

A must read for preachers

What an excellent book! Dave doesn't come over as "preachy" and doesn't force a certain style upon you. When reading about my preaching style, I could only shake my head and say, "Wow! This is me. He is describing me." The interviews, tips and cautions are helpful. His book wil add zest to my preaching now that I am aware of the few tiny changes I need to make in my style of preaching, and he has challenged me to experiment more with other styles that I would feel comfortable with.

Great choice for upper elementary kids

Beck's book fills a gap in career books for elementary readers. Often these books are geared towards primary students and don't have enough depth for kids who are already passionate about a career choice. Beck avoids the typical "Day in the Life" scenario, instead following her fictional architect through the project of designing his own home. Each short chapter describes a specific architectural component. Line drawings give examples of the types of options available to the architect, and a well-written text describes the decision making process that goes into the final design. A high quality book for upper elementary students who dream of being architects. (Review based on copy provided by the publisher through NetGalley).

For all the youth who want to be an architect when they growp up!

This book surprised me in a couple ways. One, it was very thorough, as if one was taking a class and having everything explained to them. Two, it had good graphics to follow along with what was being presented.

I read it along with my 10 year old, who found it very interesting. I think I may have a future architect at my house!

It calls itself a handbook, and I would have to agree. There is enough information in here about the basics. Things like elevation, site plan, floor plan, scale, and so much more. The author explains it all in simple terms that are easy to understand.

What impressed me was along the reading we ran into some bits of history from Greek to Frank Lloyd-Wright!

I recommend this for young ages who are talking careers or who need to make a book report on similar subjects. Or just plain learning value for a parent to teach the child.

A Great Foundation

This is the complete review as it appears at my blog dedicated to reading, writing (no 'rithmatic!), movies, & TV. Graphic and children's reviews on the blog typically feature two or three images from the book's interior, which are not reproduced here.

Note that I don't really do stars. To me a book is either worth reading or it isn't. I can't rate it three-fifths worth reading! The only reason I've relented and started putting stars up there is to credit the good ones, which were being unfairly uncredited. So, all you'll ever see from me is a five-star or a one-star (since no stars isn't a rating, unfortunately).

I rated this book WORTHY!

This is a really great idea for a story-book for a kid. I would have loved this as a youngster because I was always reading stuff about how things worked and how buildings - castles, skyscrapers - whatever - were put together, but I never became an architect. Now I can! Just kidding. But seriously, this is the ticket - or perhaps not the ticket, but certainly a foot in the well-designed door of the beautiful station where the train to your future departs!

The book is short, but has lots in it, including a lot of text, so it’s not for kids who haven't a good handle on their reading skills, but it is crystal clear for those who have and who are willing to pay attention. On the other hand, there's no reason at all why you couldn’t read it and explain it to younger children.

Architecture isn’t simple after all (it just looks that way when it’s done right!), so it’s a daunting task to embark upon a project like this, and impart enough to be engaging and make sense to children without it becoming a textbook. Be assured that, for those who are willing to spend a little bit of time here, this book will reward. It talks about all aspects of building, using a residential house as an example, but frequently referring to other types of buildings.

I remember when I was a young kid, trying to apply rules of logic to the English language - which is a doomed activity, let’s face it - and wondering why hoof became hooves, but roof didn’t become rooves! I had all but forgotten that until I started looking at the plan view of the house, with the interesting roof line and got carried back! Woah! It’s dizzying experience going down memory lane sometimes, isn't it?!

Anyway, this book not only discusses the how, but also the what and the why, which is just as important. How do we select a site? How do we factor in the environment? Why are there so many drawings?! What do these lines and symbols mean? It never goes into too much detail - just enough to get an understanding of the things discussed on the page, and it challenges the reader to think about what they're doing, and to try to improve upon the house that's designed in the text - what would you do? How would you change it? What would you prefer in a house you were designing? Of course there's far more to it than is shown here, but this is a great way to start.

There's no genderism here. This books reads true and pure for females, males, or anyone in between. The only thing you need worry about is whether you have enough large, blank pieces of paper upon which your kid(s) can execute their grand designs. Or maybe you can find a site or an app online which allows kids to design their own buildings, and save those trees! Maybe after they’ve designed their building, you can help them construct it with Legos and see if it works?

I loved this book, and I recommend it.

Plenty of books have been written over the decades on San Francisco's great earthquake: what sets this apart is its visual focus, gathering nearly two hundred vintage photos - some amazingly never published before - to include images of famous buildings and neighborhoods alike. While text explores decisions by city leaders after the quake, it's these black and white historical prints which will provide the most impact, presenting photos of people, buildings and events. A very strong addition to any local San Francisco history collection: a top pick.
