Just got my copy of Pickled Punks and Girlie Shows: A Life Spent on the Midways of America and despite the disclaimer that I wrote the intro, it's a wonderful, wonderful thing. This guy can turn a phrase

When I picked up Pickled Punks and Girlie Shows, I thought I'd be reading a short history of carnival life. It was so much more. In his folksy narrative, Rick West does some serious yarn spinning and backs it all up with a plethora of archival and personal photos depicting life on the road. The author tells his stories of struggles without complaint and shares his joy of the midway with you as if you've known each other for years.
Although Pickled Punks and Girlie Shows is a chronology of one man's carnyhood, Rick West pulls in tales of so many others and ties in his personal connection to them. He includes a fascinating chapter about "The Frozen Man", a controversial exhibit that traveled the midways for years and of his efforts to create his own mystery creature. The author can laugh at himself when he tells how he is duped by a monkey. He gives the reader a taste of crowd-drawing exhibits of large, tiny, or unusual animals, fake (gaff) displays and eccentric show owners with a funnel cake and cotton candy on the side.
Read this book! It will change your mind about people who travel the fairgrounds. You will learn that they are intelligent, creative, hardworking, competitive and compassionate. They are human.
Grab yourself a corn dog and get it straight from the giant horse's mouth.

fascinating and fun read

This book was so entertaining from cover to cover! People will read this and be able to realize a little of the adventure that the author experienced over many years. Rick West has a way of telling the story as if he's having a chat with you on the porch over a big glass of lemonade. He brings the midway to life, making it almost possible to smell the cotton candy and sausages cooking, to see the brightly painted show fronts and to hear all the spiels. It's a slice of American life that the average working Joe barely knows exists. The book is full of colorful characters - I especially liked the monkey man story - and the author has a way of making them very human. This is a must read for anyone with an adventurous spirit!

A gee-whiz memoir...

And so begins Rick West's memoir.
Fifty-year outdoor amusement business veteran, Rick West, lets us hop in and
ride along on a trip down the highways and back roads of his unique and colorful
career.
I have never read a book that is written quite like this one. I got the feeling I
was sitting in a cookhouse listening to Rick cut up jackpots about his shows,
travels, friends and fellow showmen. A novel and interesting way to write a
memoir.
Along with the unique style it is written in, the book is chock-full of
wonderful color and black and white photographs.
One of my favorite chapters features the Minnesota Iceman, a creature frozen
in a block of ice and display around the country. I saw this controversial exhibit
back in the 1970s and Rick now lets us in on the rest of the story along with photos
of the creature without the ice.
Giant Horses, Two-headed Babies, a Unicorn, Hitler's Bulletproof Limousine,
a Frozen Whale, Showgirls, Miniature Marvels, Largest Steers, a little Monkey
Business and so much more...it's all on the inside!
