Blue Plate Heaven

This book, "Royal Delft, A Guide to De Porceleyne Fles", is beautifully designed and printed. The porceleyne factory in Delft, The Netherlands, to which it refers, was 350 years old in 2003. If you love Delft plates, known by the little pot insignia on the back, and most Dutch people do, then this is a great book to have, although at $69.95, it is not cheap. However it will save you money, as it tells you how rare the plates that are offered on sites such as EBay actually are, how many were originally made, their original selling price, and their value in recent years. When I was growing up in a Dutch emigrant household in Canada, we had a little WW1 plate hanging on our wall at home. This book was able to tell me the history of the WW1 plates Delft offered, with pictures of the entire series, and the original price and current value. It also listed the designer of the war plates, as well as the painters who worked on them and their identifier initials. I am now well on my way to collecting the series. This is a specialty book which i personally will long treasure and pass on to my own daughter.

Great Instructions and Ideas

I just got the book today and am feverishly reading the book. I just got started with metal sculpture classes and this book has given me some great things to try in my next class. There are lots of pictures of projects. Most are abstracts but, the instructions cover everything from coloring the metal with a torch to creating a water fountain. The book is great and well worth the money I spent. I highly recommend the book.

If you're serious about getting into metal sculpting...

I read Harvey's first book, A Passion for Metal and on the strength of that, I bought myself a little torch and started...playing as he recommnded. Here we are
four years later and I'm having a BALL! I got the heads-up that he had a "book II" in the works and I had fingers crossed that it wouldn't be a
rehash or watered down version of the first book. Well...it isn't. It blew me away. Here's why. The guy knows how to write. He knows how to sprinkle just the right amount of humanity into whatever he wants to say that it just sinks in. I love his giant black schooner tree house out in the woods and it looks like he's making bigger and bigger stuff (sculptures). If you have any tiny flame of interest in this medium...c'mon in the water's fine and Harvey is the pied piper to show you the way. You have to read the last page devoted to his grandkid. It's advice you could tattoo backwards on your chest and read every morning while you're brushing your teeth! And if you just want to feast on the color photos for a couple days first, you won't be disappointed there either.

This could have been a great book if it wasn't for the fact that most of the images are of poor quality and the color reproduction is pretty bad. i do not recommend this book it's not worth the money at all ! look for something with better print, color and reproduction quality. The book is disappointing.

Fundamental book on the Do-335

This book is a pleasure to read, from various points of view:
The written material are highly interesting telling about the entire environment in wich this awesome machine grew up during the WWII. The technical info is very complete too. The graphical is stunning, with lots of photos, exploded views, transparencies, etc. My only complain in the graphic content, is caused by the priority gave to the Dornier's original documents, wich are -obviously- written in german. That's itself OK, but it would be much better if they include the same paragraph translated into english, you lose a great time no knowing what is in (for example), the exploded view's references. This is the only fail y can tell from an otherwise excellent book. You'll enjoy it for sure!

America's entry into World War I in 1917 was marked by the need to quickly build an Army and deploy it to France. Among the units deploying was the 29th Blue and Gray Division. Comprised of National Guardsmen from the Mid-Atlantic region, it quickly achieved a reputation as a top-notch outfit during the Meuse-Argonne campaign. This reputation was enhanced in World War II when the 29th was selected for the assault on German-occupied France in the D-Day landings of June 6, 1944. The courage and sacrifice shown by Guardsmen that day was later matched in bloody fighting at St Lô, Brest, and Julich. In the years that followed, the 29th would add to its lustrous reputation by becoming the Guard s first Light division and serving effectively as peacekeepers in the Balkans at times only fifty miles from where World War I started. Using previously unpublished material and images from 1917 to 2001, here is their story.

About the Author
Alexander Barnes is a retired Army civilian living in Virginia. He served in the Marine Corps and Army National Guard, retiring as CW4. He has a masters degree in Anthropology and authored "In a Strange Land; The American Occupation of Germany 1918-1923" and "To Hell With the Kaiser; America prepares for War."
Tim Williams is the Adjutant General of Virginia. He's an alumnus of Virginia Tech and the U.S. Army War College and his current rank is Major General in the Virginia Army National Guard.
Christopher Calkins is a noted Civil War historian and writer and currently the Park Manager at the Sailor's Creek Battlefield park in Virginia.

Alexander Barnes along with Tim Williams and Chris Calkins have provided us with a comprehensive & easy to follow history of the 29th Infantry division in their new release: "Let's Go! The History of the 29th Infantry Division" from Schiffer Publishing. This large attractive coffee table book follows the 29th from its inception as an Army Division in 1917 up until 2001. The "Blue & Gray" Division is best known for the carnage that was inflicted upon them on June 6th 1944 at a place called Omaha Beach. However, the history of the 29th is much more comprehensive and fascinating than just a few hours of horror on a German occupied beachhead.

The authors have used an incredible abundance of previously unpublished period photos as well as high resolution colored images of historical 29th artifacts on nearly every page as they weave the story of this division between them. From its formation at Camp McClellan in the early days of the United States involvement in the "Great War" that was taking place in Europe, the writers show us the tale of America's Doughboys of the 29th as they went off to fight in what we now call WWI. Chapter after chapter of this book follows these brave sons of America through their fighting, their return home and then back into the fighting of WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Sinai and Bosnia. Even the peacetime years and cold war are covered in great detail as the 29th Infantry Division hopped on the rollercoaster of history.

This book has included a multitude of short biographies of the Generals, leaders and the average men who wore the blue & gray insignia and moved this storied National Guard division into the annals of history. This book is a must have for any collector or historian of the 29th Infantry Division and is even an incredible companion to those who are just students of U.S. military history from the pre-WWI years up into the new millennium. The 296 history and photo filled glossy pages of this attractive hardcover book are worth more than five times the asking price.

Let's Go! A must read for all interested in history and militaria

Let's Go! is ta remarkable documentary of the 29th Infantry Division throughout its noble history, starting in the establishment of the National Guard in the buildup to the Great War through its modern-day service as an international peacekeeping force.

As a reference, Let's Go! is a must for every library and serious military historian as the achieves a goal far beyond any previous unit history.

For the casual reader, Let's Go! presents a historical narrative starting in the days before World War I with the creation of the 29th, continuing through contemporary international deployments, through stories bringing each time and place fully to life, all within historical context. Beautifully reproduced photographs draw readers intimately into the division's story.

Alexander Barnes weaves the stories of the 29th Division through the 20th century and into the 21st, highlighted by personal narratives richly brought to life with stunning illustrative and detailed photographs. Barnes demonstrates a keen eye for the finest points, just as he did with his previous groundbreaking book, In a Strange Land, bringing to light intricate details within uniforms, insignias, and militaria that left this reader with a better understanding well beyond the 29th Division.

Artifacts were photographed and reproduced in the the book with attention to the highest quality. The page layouts keep the reader flowing through the multiple layers of the division's history. Stories of individuals who have served with the 29th bring personality and context to wider times and events.

Unequivocally a must have book on the 29th Infantry Division for ANYONE who has interest in U.S. 20th century military history

Outstanding! Anyone who has any interest at all in the 29th Infantry Division, whether during its formation during the early part of the twentieth century from National Guard units, its participation in World War I and World War II, or up to and including the twenty first century should have this book on his or her bookshelf. As one would expect, the book provides detailed (and well-written) discussions on the 29th Infantry Division during wartime. But a unique and refreshing feature of this book is that it provides many details and discussions on the the 29th Infantry Division before, between, and after wars. The discussions are supplemented with many photos of all things related to the 29th Infantry Division. I suspect that many of the photos have never been published. Each chapter is well-referenced. In this regard researchers may find this book to be an unusually good reference source and research tool. Another noteworthy aspect of this book is that it is written at level that just about any reader would comprehend. I have a copy of just about every book written on the 29th Infantry Division, and I must say that all-up, "Let's Go! The History of the 29th Infantry Division 1917-2001" is the most versatile of them all given its wide-ranging scope, and breadth and depth of its content. Whether one is a novice, or a well-known U.S. military historian, this book is without question a must have.

Should be called: barely antique Swords & Daggers with astronomical prices

Being an avid collector and connoisseur of Islamic and Indonesian Arms and Armor, I picked this book, based off of the cover design. Although the book is fully illustrated and well layed out, I had no confidence in the information after the first couple of pages. The author often, and when I say often, I mean 80% of the time, claims swords and daggers to be at least 19th century. This is not the case. Many of the Daggers featured in this book are recently made for the tourist market in Indonesia and India. You can tell by the style of Koftgari technique fairly easy with just a little bit of knowledge on the subject. This also includes Victorian European swords. The prices are off the charts. I laughed when I saw fairly plain Keris daggers, plain dha swords and beat up talwars estimated at over $1500. Now, the author is not selling these pieces (yet), these are just estimated prices.

Perhaps if a few zeros were taken off the prices, that would be more realistic. I would not recommend this book. In fact, for the first time using amazon, I am sending mine back for a refund. I would however recommend anything by Elgood, Figiel, Robinson etc for Islamic ...and Albert Zonneveld's recent book for Indonesian.

Excellent Tarot Language Primer

It’s from Schiffer. Beth Seilonen illustrated it. The book is The Celtic Cross Tarot Spread: Cutting to the Chase.

So what do I think of a Tarot book that claims no memorization needed? I'll tell you! I've been a professional Tarot consultant for 30+ years so I do have an opinion. :D

First let me say that I had some reservations about this book. I wasn’t sure it could deliver. The back starts out with “Reading the Tarot doesn’t have to be hard! The Celtic Cross spread requires no long hard hours of study, no memorization, no muss or fuss–just lay out your cards, open the book, and begin!”

That’s a pretty big claim, y’all. Still I put aside my reservations to open the book. I have to say that it delivers what it offers.

Every card is interpreted in every position. The nuances of how a card’s meaning changes depending on the position it falls in is clearly highlighted.

The writing is crisp without a lot of filler. The illustrations are simple and direct. The table of contents is easy to navigate.

All in all, a very good book.

However, the one caveat I would have is that this shouldn’t be the only book you use. I don’t think being dependent on a book is a good thing. But to use this as a jumping off point? Yes, excellent.

Think of this as a primer for Tarot language. Just as you might “see Jane. See Jane run.” here you can “see the two of Swords. See the two of Swords in the past or as the outcome” to begin refining your own language skills.

I would recommend The Celtic Cross Tarot Spread: Cutting to the Chase, by Shannon MacLeod, illustrations by Beth Seilonen.

Good resource, very readable

The Celtic Cross is an accessible reference for beginners or anyone who would like to tease out tarot interpretations based on cards, upright or reversed, and within the ten positions of the Celtic Cross spread. In this way, it is similar to the Tarot Decoder. There are three spreads suggested, and a brief forward and one page on how to use the book, with the bulk of the text providing the meanings of each of the 78 tarot cards as they might appear within the Celtic Cross.
Each card meaning is briefly noted, followed by interpretations for upright and for reversals over the ten positions. I found the meanings often similar to those found in the Tarot Decoder; yet there are some distinct variations that are unique. Simple pen and ink drawings accompany the text and the style of writing is informal. One example, for the Six of Wands, reversed, 3rd position, states: “Don’t let stubborn pride prevent you from admitting you are wrong. Nobody’s perfect. Everyone makes mistakes—even you.”
This interpretive tour through the tarot on the Celtic Cross spread begins with meanings for the Major Arcana, followed by the Minor Arcana and finishing up with the Court cards. There are a few good reasons to add The Celtic Cross to your tarot reference library. It adds an alternate voice to the understanding of each single card; have a good read through all the interpretations for any one card which would help you get a feel for how that card morphs in nuanced meanings within the Celtic Cross. In addition, if you feel stymied with a repetition of a vexing card meaning—something you may not accept as given in other books—have a look at The Celtic Cross and you may find a more gentle or appropriate interpretation. It is a lovely new resource to enjoy for those who often cast the 10 card Celtic Cross.

Brilliant!

I shook my head after reading the forward in this book. The brilliant honesty really made me smile. Imagine a tarot book that teaches you how to do a Celtic Cross reading without ever studying the tarot! Actually with this book and a deck of cards you can read three different spreads: The Celtic Cross, The Three Card Spread and a One Card reading. I do have one word of caution here, if you don't have a sense of humor you may not enjoy this book to its fullest potential. I happen to love a book with a sense of humor-especially the witty humor of Shannon MacLeod.

There's an image of how to lay out the Celtic Cross cards with appropriate numbers so you don't get confused.

Okay, each tarot card is listed in the book with a description for each position of the Celtic Cross spread-both upright and reversed. If you're using one of the other spreads it will tell you what position to look at for the description. There is also a general description that you can read to get a feel of what the card is all about.

The beauty of this book is although you are looking up a quick answer for your question you are also learning to read the tarot!

I recommend this to anyone who has any interest in divination with cards but doesn't really want to learn the whole system or memorize anything. In fact, this is perfect for those who feel they can't memorize all of the meanings of the tarot cards.

The illustrations throughout the book are by Beth Seilonen. I would say these images are simplified in a pleasing way and work perfectly for this type of book.
I applaud Shannon MacLeod for this great work and I think many will benefit from this lighter and more modern approach to reading tarot cards.

Beautifully produced coffee table art book

I also bought, "100 Painters of New York" by this publisher. It was interesting to see the difference between the two books with their different authors. I enjoyed them both, but it was funny to see how perfectly they echoed their geographic zeitgeist... laid back, (no resume flaunting), wild and crazy West Coast, versus, up tight, status conscious (boring reading of awards and shows), New York.

This Book is Wonderful

I am a Children's Pastor, and found this book through my Amazon Recommendations (thanks Amazon!). It is fantastic. The object lessons are easy to do, and really grab the attention of kids. Each lesson is keyed to a scripture and a quick "devotion" but I've often found that in going over a given illusion or illustration, I will be inspired to take it in an entirely different direction, and build an entire children's sermon on it. Other times, like last week, I used three objects from this book during one lesson.
The mark of a good object lesson for kids is when you're doing it, and you hear "oooooooh!" rise up from your congregation. This book is full of "ooooooooohs!"
Highly recommended. Can be adapted to small Sunday School classes, or full blown Children's Church.

Perfect for group devotions

The text is easy to understand and the projects are easy to do. I would recommend this book for anyone who is involved with elementary age children. It's a different approach to the typical "sunday school lesson"

Cool stuff

Although this book is geared toward Sunday School teachers, it deserves a place in any home where parents want to make the lessons of the Bible fun and memorable. Show Me! Devotions for Leaders to Teach Kids is an impressive collection of tricks, projects, and creations that help parents and teachers bring home biblical truths.

Written by Susan L. Lingo, each two page spread of this book features a project, complete with biblical references and questions to ask kids. For example, the first project requires a raw potato and a straw. Lingo suggests reading Matt. 19:24 (about a camel going through the eye of a needle) and asking kids how easy they think it would be for that to actually happen. Then she suggests asking kids how easy it is to push a straw through a raw potato. When kids try, they won't be able to do it, but with a simple trick, the adult can. Then the adult can explain that God makes even the impossible is possible.

Many of the projects offer hands-on things for the kids themselves to do.

Almost all the projects use ordinary household or office items, and the author gives suggestions for additional, related things that might go with the project, according to the maturity level of the kids you're teaching. Lingo also offers ideas on other Bible verses the project might work nicely with. Throughout, simple black and white illustrations help adults understand how to pull off the projects.

What I Like: Many of these projects are sure to impress kids, like the bottle that obeys commands, a banana that falls apart (it's "bad fruit") when it's unpeeled, balancing a glass of water on a card (illustrating balance in our lives), and "magically" appearing crosses (for a lesson in communication). I also appreciate that Lingo has given adults a complete program - with a script to follow.

What I Dislike: Some of the projects seem a little tricky - and in fact the author cautions adults to practice ahead of time. If you're not good at magic tricks, you probably won't be good at some of these projects because they require "slights of hand."

Overall Rating: Very Good.
