A MUST HAVE book on the subject of SS uniforms

If you've been looking for a book that offers BOTH wartime photographs AND multi angle/ close up studies of uniforms from actual collections, this book (and the two other volumes from that trilogy) is EXACTLY what you need. More than just a splendid coffee table book, it is an outstanding source of information about the history/construction and regulation for each and every variety of uniform issued to the various branches of the SS ( both BEFORE and DURING WW2) and it is worth every single penny I invested in it. As a militaria dealer, I could simply not afford not to add it to my collection. If you are interested by that subject and don't have those 3 books, then you are missing an essential resource. If on the other hand you want to know the subject in depth and do not plan to buy each and every book on the market, you have to get THAT serie. My only regret is that Mr. Michael D. Beaver is no longer among us to share his amazing knowledge of German Militaria.

Only pants and jackets examined, no caps (as a part of uniform). The volume might be 1,5 times thinner: some pages only half filled with information... But rarity of the items and quality of thier analisys allow to consider this book the best research on SS uniform for today.

A superb well written first hand account of the battles and experiences of a German Panzer NCO radio operator on the Eastern Front.Taken from the diaries of Erich Hagar one reads of the events, battles and everyday life in a frontline tank regiment.I found the diaries captivating and literally could'nt put the book down reading it in its entirety over two evenings! The book is liberally littered with Erichs photos and bring the diary visually to life.Many photos clearly detail German tanks and vehicles, also his fellow crew members of his tank,and his comrades in his regiment, many of whom are killed in action giving the book an added poignancy.This book is a valuable addition to the military history of the Eastern Front and as a personal diary account of a combatant brings a freshness to the subject. Many historians in this area get bogged down with the stategic arguments and history of these campaigns.That is natural and relevent of course but quite often removes the human element and one becomes embroiled in numbers and statistics thus forgetting that those numbers are flesh and blood.Erichs diary makes one feel for and remember that these were real people who fought and died in a war of great brutality,but also that there were moments of laughter and happiness.As the decades pass and veterans fade away diaries like Erichs are an important testament to those young men who endured and suffered in the crucible of war. I have read a number of diaries from Napoleonic to ww2 and can certainly say that is one of the most engaging and interesting.I would highly recommend this book to any student of the Eastern Front and indeed WW2, and essential reading for those interested in the Panzer formations.Excellent.

Interesting book on life as a panzer soldier on the eastern front

This is an interesting book on the experiences of a panzer soldier on the eastern front of World War II. The war diaries of Erich Hager start with the invasion of the Soviet Union by the Germans in June, 1941 and continues through January, 1945. Erich survives the war on the eastern front which in itself is quite a feat. In the process, he obtains an award for being involved in 75 panzer actions - very rare.

He was involved in the battles leading up to Moscow in 1941, the Soviet's counterattack in early 1942, the attempt to save the beleagured Stalingrad 6th army in late 1942, and the Soviet counterattacks in the Ukraine and southern front in 1943-early 1945. There were many examples of close calls for Erich and many colleagues lost over the four years.

A very positive part of the book are the excellent and rare photos of Erich, his comrades and their tanks. This, in itself, makes the book worth the purchase for any individual interested in World War II. The section at the end where the history of the 17th Panzer division is provided is also excellent.

What made the book interesting to me at least were the numerous references to "getting their booze on" (apparently panzer soldiers had many opportunities to get drunk during the war), references to the ladies (Erich had a lot of girl friends during the war and there are pictures of them at the end of the book), and the fact that he had a lot of free time to spend at theaters, etc. The life of a panzer soldier apparently was not as brutal as the life of a foot soldier on the eastern front. Part of this appears to be Erich's continued optimism in the face of the brutality of war.

On the negative side, Erich's writing, especially at the start of the book, is very abrupt - short sentences without much description of what is happening.

However, given all of this, this is a good book worth a view from an individual interested in the World War II on the Eastern Front.

Love this book and all the previous books in the series. The author has a very thorough knowledge of Star Wars. The pictures are amazing and helps me with my collection to know what I have and what I hope to track down in the future. Got my copy in a very timely fashion.

The author has now split the book into two different volumes - this one is just the toys and the next one will be everything but the toys. Very well done.

This was a gift for my husband who is becoming obsessed with Star Wars toys. He loves it, as it gives him a base from which to start identifying different toys and what they are worth. It reminds me of a textbook, in the way that it is bound! A nice gift for a Star Wars nut.

Good with the photos......

This is a really good resource and easy to look things up, however I felt it was lacking in information. I would have liked to have seen a lot more "writeups" on each photo and item, detailing a little history about each. There were listings for each about the current value of items which was good, but there should be more details about manufacturers, markings etc. I am glad to have the book, but I feel the need to get one that is more comprehensive.

Super nice book.

Very nice book on Jadite and Delphite glassware. Well put together book, section for both the Jadite and Delphite glass with lots of color photos, descriptions and values. Provides lots of infomation on the glassware. Excellent book for anyone collecting or dealing in this type of vintage glassware. It is a older book from 2002 but is still very helpful and informative. I find older price guides are still great to have on hand, and the smaller size of this book makes it easy to carry on trips to auctions, antique malls, etc. There is a larger hardcover book out on Jadite but its about double the retail price of this smaller book. So this one is a great deal. I highly recommend this book. Thank you.

Rare First Hand Accounts

There are some things that only a first-hand account can truly convey. The kind of details that put you into the cockpit as a participant, and not just an outside observer. This book has those details, offering an unparalleled look at modern jet aviation air combat from the pilots that scored the kills.

The book chronicles all US air-to-air victories made between 1981 and 2001 - most of them scored during Operation Desert Storm (over Iraq) in 1991, or Operation Allied Force (over Bosnia) in 1999. Retold from the testimony of the pilots who flew the missions, this book offers a glimpse of the real world adrenalin rush, that you just don't get from the more dry, historical texts covering these same wars and events.

This book is a must-have for any jet aviation enthusiast, providing a much-needed companion to the broader historical texts written on these wars.

A Must Have

Craig "Quizmo" Brown is a former US Air Force fighter pilot who has used his considerable connections and expertise to compile this complete list of US air-to-air victories dating back to 1981.

The beauty of this book does not lie with the reproduction or illustrations, although both of these are very pleasing, but with the authority of the text. The entire book has clout not because Brown has interpreted the engagements as he believes they occurred, but because he has tracked down and interviewed a great many of the pilots involved in the fifty-six different kills described within; what you read is almost always the recollection of the man in the cockpit at the time. There are only a few exceptions to this, and Brown is clear about the source and the timeline in which the information was obtained at the start of each narrative.

This is a great book for anyone interested in modern military air combat, and in particular the cutting edge technologies employed by the United States Air Force and Navy to achieve total air dominance in major conflicts since 1981, with Iraq and the Balkans being the two major theatres. There's no 'gung ho' attitude or blatant bias to the narratives - the candid nature of the fighter pilots interviewed means that many recall their kills warts 'n all. That means they highlight what went wrong as well as what went right, and for the reader it's a privilege to be treated without condescension.

The subtext to all of this is that there are acronyms in this book - there would simply be no way to write this book without incorporating them, and they are an integral part of modern air combat. They usually relate to some technical device or concept that are easy to understand. None are left unexplained, and they barely detract from the flow of the text since their use has been kept to a minimum. A full glossary is provided at the beginning to help establish what these all mean before you delve into the action.

In summary, Debrief is an excellent book containing what are effectively fifty-six short stories. That makes it ideal for those seeking a short read (or with short attention spans!), but does not alienate the more analytical and hard core of aviation enthusiasts and historians because there are a significant number of learning points to discover in each engagement narrative.

Debrief has certainly earned a prominent spot in my overcrowded book case, and I believe it is a `must have' reference work.

Exciting Collection of Combat Reports!

In this invaluable 2007 volume, ex-USAF fighter pilot Craig Brown presents blow-by-blow accounts of all 56 successful air combats fought by U.S. air units between 1981 and 1999. In terms of accuracy and excitement, Brown's book can't be beat since, in almost all cases, the accounts were supplied by the aircrew involved in the engagement. Air combat enthusiasts will want to add this exciting, well-illustrated book from Schiffer Publishing to their collection post-haste.

The engagements covered in DEBRIEF are a real smorgasbord of aircraft types and geographic locations. Not unexpectedly the Air Force and Navy's top-line fighters - the F-14, F-15 and F-16 - were the main players not to mention the occasional odd-duck like the A-10! Likewise their opponents were a mixed bag of MiGs, Mirages, Sukhois, helos, transports, trainers, etc. With few exceptions the kills were made with AAMs, mainly AIM-7 Sparrows, which may surprise some readers considering the Sparrow's dismal record over North Vietnam.

Though I gave DEBRIEF five stars, to be honest I felt 4 1/2 stars a more appropriate rating. Don't get me wrong: DEBRIEF is a great read and stands as THE definitive account of post-Vietnam War engagements. The air combat junkie in me loves this book. The first-person accounts, though heavy with fighter pilot techno-babble, put you right in the cockpit for some very exciting missions. Then too the narratives are illustrated with hundreds of photographs, mostly in color, of aircrew, aircraft, in-flight formations, ships, squadron patches, etc. and ten artworks depicting specific engagements.

The amateur historian in me, though, wishes Brown had done more with his material. Having compiled all this raw data, he could have made the book much more useful by doing some basic analysis of all those engagements. Specifically, what do all those combats MEAN in terms of modern air combat?

Reading through DEBRIEF, several points easily come to mind: what a killer machine the F-15 is, what a dominant role U.S. AWACS platforms play in modern air combat, the outstanding performance of the AIM-7, etc. So why did the F-15 perform so well? How have AWACs aircraft reshaped air combat? How come the Sparrow performed as well as it did and so on?

Then too I wondered if there were unsuccessful engagements during that timeframe and, if so, why did they fail? When I was doing the research for my MIG KILLERS OF YANKEE STATION I felt it was equally as important to discuss the failures as well as the successes to get the complete story. I would have enjoyed reading Brown's take on fighter combat in the 1980-90 timeframe.

In any case, if you like reading about air combat, pick up a copy of DEBRIEF asap. You won't regret it!

Excellent book for any beginning knifemaker.

I've only been creating knives for a little over a year now. This was one of the first books I ever picked up on knife making, and I still think it's one of the best I've read.

Have you ever taken any entry level college courses? If so, this book would make a great textbook for knife 101. The steps are concise, very clear, and listed chronologically. Another comparison I could easily make is to various books created for dummies. What you can do, how to do it, when to do it, what to do it with all these things are covered with adequate footnotes, ETC.

The book is also profusely illustrated with pictures which are clear, and relate directly to what the reader is covering at the time. A brief amount of space is relegated to knife making theory, and then the reader is launched into the practical part of knife creation. Creation of a small forge, various tools, a knife created from a old coil spring, forging, tempering, ETC. are all adequately covered so a beginner can get started right. This book will easily allow someone considering forging a knife to create their first one with relative safety as well as ease.

IF you want to know if forging a knife is something you can do for fun and/or profit later on down the road: BUY THIS BOOK because you won't be sorry you did.

Written for the hobbyist who intends to make a very few knives. The photos are excellent and the text is clear. The suggestions for modifying and adapting tools are practical for a hobbyist however some of the materials are more common in Europe than the US. This absolutely is not the book for someone who wants to know how advanced hobbyists and professionals outfit a shop or do their work. For example, you will find instructions for making an make shift anvil from scrap and a grinder from a woodworking belt sander. You will not find an informative discussion of 2x72 inch knife making grinders or the pros and cons of the available commercial anvils suitable for forging knives.

My collection of knife making and sharpening books and DVD's is extensive; I would rate this book as one of the very best I have. Very informative, and with first rate photography as well. Contains thorough, step by step instruction from two extremely well qualified knife making instructors. Many people make great knives, but few have the ability to teach the process as well as these two gentlemen! Would recommend it highly to anyone interested in learning how to make high quality knives.

Very interesting to see and read

Book Cover Designs by Matthew Goodman will delight book lovers on many levels. This book is, of course, visually interesting; don't let that keep you from reading and thinking about the text in the book.

I found the Forward by Nicole Caputo, "The Future of the Cover Designer in the Digital Age", to be a particularly interesting. It addresses the changes that have kept the print book alive and well and the role design has played in doing so.

While each designer only offers a couple paragraphs of explanation they all managed to give the core of their approaches. If the covers shown are in chronological order then I would say a couple of the designers have changed (progressed?) noticeably over their careers.

The biggest takeaway for me has to do with a fairly common comment from the designers in light of a reader's common tendency to judge a book, to varying degrees, based on the cover design. Many of the designers mentioned maybe reading a little of the book, possibly just the description or details from the editor. From that they will try to determine what they will use, what the mood seems to be, maybe a key element, etc. So the cover that we readers often use in deciding what book to look at in a bookstore is based largely on the mood a designer felt the book conveyed and then their idea of how to present that mood. All well and good until I realize how often I feel the designers have been successful, which I think is quite often. I find that both interesting and impressive.

In addition to book lovers and readers I would also recommend this book to anyone considering design, especially cover design, for a career. As a coffee table book I think it will be a nice conversation starter at get-togethers.

Interesting book for the lovers of design and books.

As an avid reader, I'm attracted by covers at lot.
If I'm just browsing books at the bookstores or the library without any specific tittle in mind, most of the time, it's the cover that will pick up my curiosity and make me read the summary.
And as a professional, I know the power of a good picture combined with words. That's why I was curious about this book and what the author has to tell us.

It's a very simple and effective book that let a large place to the book designers. And it was cool to spot a book, I have read, and have some informations about the designer and how he/she is working.
Also interesting to see that for some designers, I was drawn into their art, sensibily and world regardless of the book. I would have easily picked all their design and be curious about the story.
So, I've learned also a lot about me as a reader just by learning about cover design.

Interesting book for the lovers of design and books.

A delightful look at cover design.

If you've ever been fascinated or curious about what goes into a book cover this book is for you. I work in book publicity and frequently reach out to our production team with input on what is working and what is not in terms of cover design so I was really eager to look at the process as described by the artists and designers themselves. To my unexpected delight this didn't only have literature covers. I was pleased to see several covers that I loved, that had caught my eye in the marketplace, presented with information about the designer. I devoured this in one sitting and felt like a whole new perspective had been opened for me both as reader and publishing industry professional.

If you're someone who loves art, design, typography, or simply just loves books I recommend checking this one out.

About the Author
Charlie Mack is one if the world's foremost authorities on Matchbox Toys. Born in Middletown, Connecticut, in 1956, he has lived in Durham, Connecticut, his entire life. Charlie grew up at a time when Matchbox toys were just beginning to gain popularity in the United States so, of course, he spent a great deal of time playing with them. By the age of eleven, he decided to start collecting them on a more serious level. It took nearly a decade to gather his first thousand pieces. Soon after that, though, his collection grew at a faster rate. He has accumulated what is probably the world's largest collection of a single toy brand, with over 30,000 items. Charlie started the Matchbox USA Club back in 1977 as a local off-shoot of American International Matchbox. The club celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2012, with over 400 members worldwide. In 1992, Charlie opened up part of his home as the Matchbox & Lesney Toy Museum; his collection is housed in seven individual rooms. Charlie gladly takes visitors through by appointment at no charge. He has written four previous volumes on Matchbox, all incorporated here, along with new materials, in one massive volume.

Matchbox book

While this may be a good purchase for someone who has never purchased one of Mack's books before, it was very disappointing for me. Essentially, this was just a reprint of the previous edition. Little to nothing new was added beyond the cover photos. Should have saved my money.

Organizational issues

I was expecting a chronological order of toys as they came out but that is not the case. About the last one third of the encyclopedia is organized in a manner that obviously suits the author but makes it very difficult to find all the toys that came out in 1953 for example. You can find a group of fire trucks issued from say 1951 to 1963 and the pages to find the pictures all listed out and another list for volvo for certain dates and the pages to find each one scattered throughout. Not the organization that I expected but lots of nice pictures.

Best reference for Matchbox

CharlesCharles Mack makes a beautiful and comprehensive book. It is simply the best. Make sure you get the latest edition. I have been a collector of Matchbox for 47 years and rely on this author’s information. You will be happy with your purchase. Thank you. Mack makes a beautiful and comprehensive book.
