good for beginner puppeteers

I bought this book because I wanted to get into doing puppet shows with our small children and the neighborhood kids. It's not Jim Henson's muppets or anything, but I think it's an okay place to start if you don't have the natural acting flair that some folks have. The actors are mostly 8-10 year old kids, with some adult actors sprinkled throughout the book. Each skit has non-vocal introductory and ending music that reminds me of Nickelodeon kids shows or after school specials. Each skit uses only two or three people puppets, and no animals puppets are used (which is nice if all you have is people puppets). The dialogue is very simple, and is geared toward elementary school kids. Your basic 8-10 year old could perform these skits with just a small amount of practice. The sound effects are a nice touch. One thing I hoped for that this didn't have was songs that the puppets sing and would stick in the mind of the audience.

If you need quick puppet skits and not real creative this is the book for you. Pre-recorder skits make putting on a show easy. Just get the puppet your CD player and your stage and go for it. Everyone will be so impressed.

As someone who loves to walk along Chatham's South Beach, with camera always ready, I have found this book invaluable in hepling me to identify many of the birds I capture in my photos. The photos in the book are beautiful. I also like that they are organized by the habitat where the birds are most often found.

The book is so attractive that it could be used as a coffee table book in addition to being a useful bird identification guide. This would be a great gift for anyone who loves the Cape and the wild creatures that live there.

For anyone who lives of Cape Cod, this is a terrific book. I wanted to be able to identify the birds that visited our feeder which is located on our property a couple of miles from the shore. The photographs of this book are organized in terms of the environments within which various birds are often seen. Hence, I could skip the shoreline section entirely and looks for birds in the "fields" and "gardens" sections. Photographs were obviously collected over a lifetime by the author, and the books was obviously assembled with great care. Early Logging Tools

I purchased this book to flush out my own knowledge of lumbering tools as I researched Michigan's lumbering era. Yes, this book was created with a western American slant on the lumbering era, however, many of the tools originated in the east (Maine) and the Great Lakes (Michigan) during the heyday of lumbering, 1840-1900.
Although I have thousands of pictures from the early logging era this book is a great resource-THE resource- to look at and study a single tool.
The author, Kevin Johnson (whew what a cutie), has created a book worthy of any lumbering enthusiast. There are high quality color photographs of nearly every imaginable item used. From simple handles to complicated raker gauges, spikes, peaveys, cheat sticks and pickaroons, single bit axes to two-man crosscuts, and the final chapter touches on the gasoline tools that infiltrated the forests and snuffed out the mighty lumberjack.
Throughout the book Johnson has sprinkled enough old era pictures to give you a feel of just how much manpower it took to use these tools harvesting the majestic pines. Also throughout the book you'll enjoy old advertisements for tools invented and fashioned for this industry.
Kudo's to Kevin Johnson for this huge accomplishment. I highly recommend Early Logging Tools to anyone interested in early lumbering.

I bought this book as a gift for someone that I know that collects these items. It has helped them a great deal in identifying items and what they are worth. Great book for anyone who collects these items. Would recommend this to any collector or person just interested in this time period.

Great Reference Book

Although it must have a limited audience, this book was perfect for our needs. Our Logging Museum is cataloging hundreds of artifacts, many of which haven't been in common usage for decades. This book has been very useful in finding out the names of these tools and what they were used for.

In addition to being a regular contributor to Askart.com, Gary has authored several books including "Shadows on the Mesa-Artists of the Painted Desert and Beyond" and "All Aboard-The Life and Work of Marjorie Reed." It's hard to find a good war book these days

It's hard to find a good war book these days. Seems either the author comes in with a childish morality about it, or some gung-ho armchair militarism. Thomas Wictor is neither. He approaches his research with meticulous detail to both the nascent technology and the daredevil characters that pioneered it. And it all comes across as a wonderful revelation of the humanity of those warriors that too many in civilized society would rather forget about. A remarkable read.

THE definitive work on German flamethrower pioneers

I have a modest collection of images of German troops in the Great War which I showcase on Flickr as a sort of an online homage to men who fought and died in the most miserable of circumstances. As part of my public service, I try to provide an accurate and interesting commentary for each photograph and as I am not a military historian (nor capable of being one) I rely heavily on a small library of select reference material.

In 2011, at some expense, I managed to procure a photograph of an NCO from the Garde-Reserve-Pionier-Regiment, complete with a Totenkopf sleeve patch. As I attempted to put together a half-decent narrative and began to gather material on the subject I became inextricably interested in the development and use of flamethrowers by the German Army in WW1. In order to sate my desire for further information, I was referred by a friend to Thomas Wictor's book. It was one of the best pieces of advice my friend has ever given me. Thomas' book covers every facet of the flamethrower troops from their inception, orders of battle, combat performance, equipment and so much more.

No Political Correctness Here!

I first set out to write this book to gather significant quotations from people in Hitler's Third Reich for use in my other books. As a historian, I am always looking for particular quotations and poring through book after book took too much time to find them. Then, after I had assembled 2,646 quotations (the 2,000 mentioned in the title is an undercount!), I found I actually had created a really entertaining read.

The 294 individuals, Army, Navy, Luftwaffe, Waffen-SS, Nazi Party, scientists and government bureaucrats are organized alphabetically. Some have only one quotation; Adolf Hitler leads the list with over 500. In addition, there is a short biography for each person, with date and place of birth, significant awards and positions held, nicknames, and a date, place and manner of death. There are also 112 period photos.

To qualify for inclusion, the quotation had to be interesting, ironic, horrific, comedic, or indicative of the inner workings of the person who wrote or said it. For people with more than one quote, their utterances are divided into subjects (i.e. on war, on a particular country, on lawyers, other Nazis, and so forth). The subjects are organized alphabetically under each person. Many of the quotes have never before been published.

The book is really easy to use. If you are trying to find what Heinrich Himmler said, go to page 127 and start going through his 98 quotations. Each one, unlike a lot of information on the Internet, is footnoted, showing where I found it; if you are using the quotes on an academic project, you'll need that. But if you're just interested in the Third Reich, crack the book open and just start reading; you never have to start at page 1 and read cover to cover.

However, many people - who have indeed read the entire book - have said that this work finally opened their eyes to the terrible history of National Socialism in Germany in the 1930s and 1940s. So if you have ever wondered who said the following, or didn't know that the quotes were ever made, grab the book and have a great read!

"We didn't contemplate killing anybody in the beginning."
"Hitler cultivated this evil in man."
"I wasn't running a girl's finishing school."
"Of course, I considered our treaties as so much toilet paper."
"Concentration camps were not my responsibility."

Not What I Expected

I was disappointed to find that the 1000 quotes do not offer the original German. I'd prefer 500 quotes with the original language over 1000 without it. I can appreciate the research going into it, but the deficiency detracts, I think, from it's utility.

Great photos, step by step

This short book has 3 katsinam, each is moderately easy to carve. Really nice step-by-step photos, over 60 photos with short captions for each doll. Also had a gallery at the end with multiple views of 8 other katsinam. My only complaint is that the binding didn't hold and pages fell out. This is OK, since it folds flat and stays open when working on a doll.

There is not much to like about this carelessly compiled book. Despite the author's obvious affection for the clothing, dances, lingo, and pop culture of the swing era, she fails to provide much information about any of these topics. Although costume is the primary focus, the fabrics in the items shown are not always identified. Captioning is often inane, and costume details called to the reader's attention are not always shown in the pictures--why point out a dress's "rhinestone jelly buttons" without benefit of a close-up shot in which they can be seen? The garments worn by the models--some from the author's collection, others from vintage clothing shops--are often ill fitting and badly wrinkled. Values are usually included, but there is no indication of how they were arrived at. Textile terms are defined in a glossary labeled "jive lingo," and the index is wholly inadequate. Skip this book, but take the author's advice about using back issues of fashion magazines: they are a great source of retro costume information.

Very disappointed...

I was so disappointed with this book. Models with long blue fingernails and modern hairstyles dressed in poorly fitting (and ugly) swing style clothing. The photography looks like a high-school project. I was hoping to find a professional collection of pictures and background on the wonderful fashion of this era and this book is depressing. Don't buy it, don't even look at it at the library. A complete waste of time.

Huge Disappointment

This book is a huge disappointment. Several of the photographs are out of focus. The models' hair styles, accesorries, fingernails & shoes do not match the periods. I even found a type-o during my first flip through the book. This book very much looked like a high school project that would not have received a good grade.

A "must" for costumers and fashion history enthusiasts.

In Swing Style: Fashions Of The 1930s-1950s, Maureen Reilly takes the reader on a lengthy and in-depth survey of vintage clothing styles that ranges from postwar party dresses in chiffon and velveteen, to cocktail costumes in silk, to prom dresses in tulle. Along with the sock-hop standards of circle skirts and capri pants, this history of clothing fashions includes brief biographies of the clothing designers who were responsible for the fashion trends, tips on creating a vintage look today, a valuation guide, a resource directory, and a glossary of music and fashion terms. Swing Style: Fashions Of The 1930s-1950s is a "must" for any personal, academic, or professional costuming and fashion history reference collection.
