The Ultimate Book on US Aerial Armaments

William Wolf has hit a home run with this book! I thought that Roger Freeman's "The Mighty Eighth War Manual" was the ultimate book on aerial armament. No disrespect to Mr. Freeman, but William Wolf's book has far exceeded that mark. The narratives and the pictures present a clear and concise view of what the American airman, whether a fighter pilot or bomber gunner, had at his disposal when fighting the Axis forces. I highly recommend this book to anyone. The cost of the book is pricey, but it's worth every penny!

U.S. AERIAL ARMAMENT IN WORLD WAR II-THE ULTIMATE LOOK: VOLUME 1 GUNS, AMMUNITION, AND TURRETS

The basic purpose of the Army Air Forces during World War II was destruction. It was the aircraft that distinguished this form of warfare from others, and became the accounting term by government, military, and public alike. Seemingly, an air force was its aircraft, for it wasn't stated in communiques that airmen attacked, but that aircraft attacked. No aircraft type was committed in combat operations without first receiving some modifications deemed necessary for its task. And throughout the campaign, there was always a requirement for modifications, whether to meet some deficiency highlighted in operations or to include some new and advantageous piece of equipment. The two main heavy bomber types used by the Army Air Forces in World War II were the B-17 Flying Fortress and B-24 Liberator. Depending on distance to the target, the B-17 carried a mission bomb load of between 4,000 and 6,000 pounds and the B-24 between 5,000 and 8,000 pounds. The B-29 Superfortress's maximum bomb load was 20,000 pounds. Fifteen of the eighty different types of ordnance available to the Army Air Forces were normally carried. These included the 'conventional' types-general purpose, high explosive, incendiary, and fragmentation-and 'stand-off', or controllable bombs (which the U.S. Navy had been experimenting with since 1937). The Army Air Forces' standard weapon for both offensive and defensive purposes was the .50-caliber machine gun. While a 50-inch round lacked the destructive force of a 20mm cannon shell, the mass fire from batteries of .50s in U.S. fighters proved very successful in both air fighting and ground attack. In bomber defense, it was less effective, particularly where .50s were used individually on flexible mounts. The gunner was handicapped by inferior firepower, lack of a simple and accurate sighting procedure, and also needed to be alerted to the presence of an enemy to open fire before it approached to within 1,200 feet of his bomber. Ammunition was at first available in armor piercing, incendiary, and tracer rounds. Tracer was soon found to be of questionable value as it caused gunners to disregard their sights when using it. Tracer also suffered a serious optical illusion, particularly with beam shooting. On the other hand, it had advantages in alerting other gunners in a formation and was also of value as a deterrent to attacking enemy pilots. It became general practice to only use tracer rounds in front and rear turrets where optical illusion was negligible. A brighter tracer round, known as 'headlight', was introduced during 1944 and used in these positions in a one tracer to four AP incendiary rounds ratio supply-at this time the combined armor piercing incendiary had replaced the separate AP and incendiary rounds in general usage. Following his previous "Ultimate Look" volumes on the B-29, B-32, B-1B, and B-25, author William Wolf has written the definitive book on U.S. aerial armament in World War II. Superb Coverage

This book offers superb coverage, with plenty of photos and drawings, of American aerial armament in WWII. The first of a projected three volume series on American aerial armament in WWII, it covers machine guns and cannons and everything related to them. The book has detailed coverage of the guns, ammo, turrets, gunsights, fire control, gun laying radar etc. All sections of the book are extremely well illustrated with photos and drawings often taken from WWII manuals. Its the most detailed book currently available on this subject area.
My only criticism of the book is minor, there are a few photos that are turned on there side, ex. the tail guns of a B-29. This is annoying, but I suspect it is the fault of the editors/publisher, not the author. I am looking forward to the other two volumes of the series.
