A must have book for every church nursery!

The Safe and Caring Church Nursery is a wonderful resource for the nursery director or worker. I appreciated the format of the book, and the way it lead you from safety checking your church nursery equipment, to recruiting nursery workers and keeping them, to simple activities to do with your infants and toddlers. This book takes you step-by-step in planning your nursery. If you have questions about the safety of your equipment; you will find guidelines here. If you want to know how many workers to recruit per child; you will find it here. The Safe and Caring Church Nursery is warm and friendly in tone. With encouragement, the author leads you down the road of building a successful nursery program. As the director of nurseries in a growing church, I feel much more confident in how to operate our church nurseries. The first week after reading this book, I began implementing some of the suggested plans for our nursery program, and I am currently developing a nursery manual in response to reading this book. I highly recommend this thorough book to anyone involved in church nurseries. It should certainly be in every church library and on every pastor's book shelf.

Motivating

My church asked me to coordinate our nursery upgrade since the birth of my son reduced the average age of the congregation to a spritely 65. I knew our "nursery" was dated. After I read through this book (a quick read - great for a busy mom) I understood the major changes that are necessary. At first I was overwhelmed, but the book provides the guidelines and the encouragement. In fact, there are many ideas that I will adopt in our own home nursery and in the way that I teach my son about God and the Church.

When I get on a project I tend to order every book on the subject. I bought several and while they are useful, this is the book that I will pass around to the other nursery volunteers and parents.

Additionally, I think this book would be a suitable guide for ANY religious organization, even though it is specifically Christian.

Wish I had known about this book!

When I revamped our church nursery program I didn't know this book existed. I wish I had! It covers all the basics and is applicable to any size program. The best part about the book is all of the comments and suggestions from church nursery coordinators from all over the country. Ideas that work in real places. I also liked the reproducible forms included in the book. There are also teaching and song suggestions in back of the book that are really helpful. I think this book will benefit any church nursery program.

Modern Update to Proper Etiquette Settings

Who knew you could do so much with a napkin and that table settings were so important? My answer to this question would be my Grandmother who taught me very early on how to properly set a table and fold a napkin to Ann Lander's standards. This book however takes all the "old fashion" etiquette and applies fresh and modern techniques to napkin folding and table settings that will appeal to many individuals while maintaining the standard for what is considered proper etiquette by older generations.

The high point of this book is the vast number of instructional photographs that clearly define each step that one must take to achieve some rather complicated napkin formations such as a "onesie" for baby showers or a "tuxedo" for formal affairs. The photographs along with the narrative provide the reader with enough information to feel confident that they can achieve a similar look.

The book also details in a very informative and readable way how to arrange table settings in a variety of fashions that add to your event and includes everything from Garden Parties to Thanksgiving Dinner. Your table will become the masterpiece and center stage for your next gathering using the guidelines the author has provided!

Beautiful fantasy

This book is pure fantasy for me. I love to entertain but our parties tend to run to burgers on the grill with kids running all over and the adults finding a quiet spot to eat. I think my parties are fun but wow, they are nothing like the beautiful scenes in this book. This is what I aspire to as time and resources allow. Not all the time, I still like the burgers and the running kids but sometimes the elegance of these place settings would be so fun and satisfying.

Jimmy Ng shows ways to fold a napkin that I couldn’t have imagined. Every example has a gorgeously photographed picture and step by step instructions. I didn’t know napkins could do some of the things he shows! He has examples for baby showers, Fourth of July dinners, weddings and dinner parties. He has Easter and St. Patrick’s day, just about any occasion you would give a dinner for. I think if I owned the proper napkins and had that little bit of extra time, I could actually do this. At least the book makes me think I could do this and that’s what this type of book should do. Inspire me to do more than I’ve done before. He also shows wonderful place settings that give me plenty of ideas on how to use some of those things that I never pull out of the china closet.

We’re hosting Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas at our house this year and I’d really like to try some of these ideas. I’d like to see if I could bring a little bit of this fantasy to my dining room.

A Comprehensive Guide For Beginner Or Expert

I have worked with old telephones for more than 40 years, and the repair and restoration of them is part of my livelihood. I can state, with authority, that Ralph Meyer has brought together everything a person needs to know about old telephone theory, repair, restoration, and history. I highly recommend Old Time Telephones! to beginners and seasoned collectors or technicians who need an indispensable reference source. Dr. Meyer's book sets the standard for old telephone reference material.

Improve the Quality of your Telephoning, Throw away your cell

I fell in love with old telephones when I bought my first oak wall telephone at an uncle's farm sale in S/E Minnesota way back in 1967. It didn't make any difference to me that it didn't work ... I just liked oak. I bought more wall phones, oak, then walnut and even one with a cherrywood case. The house got filled up with phones that were as much as 5 feet tall. I started collecting desk telephones and candlestick telephones instead. Very few of them worked but that didn't make any difference ... it was a history thing. Besides, I had no training in telephony and there weren't any books on the subject anyway.

And back then most folks, including me, were scared to death of Ma Bell's "Telephone Police."

But now Dr. Meyer's book is out ... I already knew the history of most of my phones but now with the information in Dr. Meyer's book I can actually make some of those old timers work again. If you are a newcomer to the telephone collecting hobby, you have a tremendous advantage over me ... it took me 40 years to learn the history of the telephone. You can buy Dr. Meyer's book, learn the history of the telephone in one weekend and at the same time have the technical information provided to you that will enable you to put grandpa's phone back on line again. The telephones from the 40s, 50s and 60s were the best ever made.

Put your offshore throwaway phone in the drawer ... use Old-Time Telephones as a guide to hook up grandpa's Western Electric 302 or 500 set, or a comparable A/E, Stromberg or Kellogg phone ... put a good phone in service in your house.

BTW ... I don't recall that Dr. Meyer's book gives instructions on the use of a rotary dial. You and your kids will have to figure out on your own how to do that.

A Valuable Reference of Telephone Technical Information

I bought Dr. Meyer's first book, Old-Time Telephones, fifteen years ago. It was a great reference on the technical workings of the telephone concepts from the early years. Dr. Meyers out does himself with his Second edition of Old-Time Telephones. He has expanded the information provided in the first reference and added much new data in twenty-two chapters. Including high quality print, pictures, drawings, etc. of circuits, transmitters, receivers, induction coils and wiring schematics. At first glance you will recognize the dedication and time Dr. Meyers has contributed to this reference. He explains the concepts and early developments of the ninetieth century pioneers who developed telegraph systems prior to the invention of the telephone. Meyers explains the experiments of Bell, Gray and others who developed and invented telephone communication, used for more that a century. He has dissected and compares telephone circuits of major manufactures of the last century up to and including the present times. Dr Meyers has written all this in simple language anyone can understand. Old Time Telephones 2nd Edition has received some great reviews from numerous telephone collectors who have worked in the industry and collected telephones, more than thirty years. This book is a valuable reference of technical information for anyone interested in telephone communications past and present. Enjoy!!

I am very excited to review “Elemental Tarot for Kids.” It comes packaged in the beautiful Shiffer packaging in a sturdy magnetic durable box. There are 71 illustrated cards in this Tarot set. The card stock is thick and not flimsy, and easy to shuffle. This set also includes a 96 page workbook. It must be said that the work book is amazing!
When I first read about this deck I was very curious. I was very pleased that it was designed by a mom for her 9 year old son.When I received it I was a bit concerned that the “scary cards” were removed and changed. As a tarot reader I know there is no such thing as bad cards. Many adults still do not understand that concept so I can clearly see how some could be very scary for a 9 year old in the 4th or 5th grade.
I decided to work through the work book. I was very pleased. It gives a great deal of guidance on responsibility. There is a lot of repetition and this is done in the way of puzzles, quizzes and exercises. The workbook is easy to understand and fun.
I see many adults who struggle with the court cards but also many who struggle with a clear understanding of the elemental properties of the Tarot. This workbook gives kids a very clear understanding of concepts that they can add to as they grow.
Rayne Storm also goes to great lengths to address ethics, respect and also teaches how we are responsible for our choices, actions, and behavior. Having a clear understanding of these truths provide an excellent foundation that the young tarot reader can take and use as their skills and knowledge evolve on their Spiritual Path.
The author's Earth Based Wisdom shines through this deck and is a wonderful tool and not necessarily just children. It is a great starting point for any beginner, or anyone who is looking for a different perspective.

Absolutely Beautiful Book

This book is a treat for anyone who loves collecting and learning about vintage glassware. So many gorgeous color photos are like eye candy! And it also has a very comprehensive history of the various glass companies involved in producing the Charleton Line. I am also happy to learn that a couple of items I have owned for years are actually rare pieces. It will be a much used addition to my library of glass reference books.

This is a fabulous book! It shows so many Charleton examples and identifies the various artists. It helped me identify designs that I had wondered what they were and where they came from. It's very thorough, detailed information, and a beautiful book to look at. I refer to it often and go through it every time I research a rose pattern that isn't Dresden.

Great Reference Tool

This "encyclopedia of practical ideas" is just that! The book will provide small group leaders with hundreds of applicable ideas to help facilitate a productive small group meeting. A wonderful reference tool for pastors and coaches to share with small group leaders. It's fairly comprehensive, yet brief and to the point. Just the way I like it.

About the Author
Tim Stevens is the Executive Pastor at Granger Community Church where he has helped the church grow from 400 to more than 4,000 in weekly attendance. He was instrumental in completing Granger's new, interactive children's center that has been featured in many publications for its innovative approach to reaching families. For nearly a decade, Stevens served in various leadership positions with Life Action Ministries, including information technology, resource development, and executive management.

Tony Morgan is the Pastor of Administrative Services at Granger where he has strengthened and developed the administrative departments with creative systems, quality staff, and hundreds of volunteers. He serves on Granger's senior management team where he contributes as a strategic thinker and practical visionary. Morgan also spent nearly ten years serving in local government, most recently as a city administrator in Niles, Michigan, where he oversaw 150 employees and a $20 million budget.

Granger Community Church has become a model of health, growth, and innovation. In Simply Strategic Stuff you'll find 99 proven church administration principles, strategies, and ideas. The value of each chapter varies but I'm confident any pastor could find something that would be helpful. A sampling of some of the chapters include:

* Count the cost before hiring a family member
* Visit other churches and steal their stuff
* Never launch a ministry without a leader
* It's easier to hire than to fire
* You can't overcommunicate the vision

Obviously many of these ideas are conventional wisdom or self-evident but even though most are not novel they are good reminders. If your reading time is limited, you can still find time to read a chapter or two every day to help you stay administratively sharp.

A Practical Look at Church Management

Senior Pastors, Executive Pastors and others in Church Leadership will benefit from this practical, friendly guide to better church management and leadership. This isn't heavy reading and there is a certain "duh" factor in a lot of the advice, but it both challenges and affirms the reader. This is particularly a good book for a church that may be experiencing the "pains" of rapid growth, transition or renewed focus. It is really quite simple reading and not every chapter is for every person or every church situation. All in all, you'll find it well worth the price of the book if you take away only one idea (but you're sure to get more than one). Watch for some "pragmatism" in a few of the chapters...remember, the ends don't always justify the means.

More Admistrative than Strategic, but Still Very Good

When I hear the word "strategic" I think more of planning for future ministry. This book focuses on the administration of present ministry. The title issue aside, the content of this book is extremely helpful and practical for both lay and clergy leaders in the church. It can be read through from cover to cover, but its best use would be as a reference to consult in specific situations. The theology here is conservative, while the methodology is very progressive. I'm pleasantly surprised with this little volume!

Visor Hats of the US Armed Forces

This book was very thorough in covering the subject matter; it consists of many color photographic examples of actual various hats worn by the Army, Marines, Navy and Merchant Marine, both officers and enlisted men or women, between the years 1930 to 1950. In addition, there is a smaller section that covers hats worn by the Red Cross, Civil Air Patrol, US Customs Service and some military hats for children during war years. Included is a specific verbal description of all hats shown by its components and construction; brims, chinstraps, material, etc.. A further benefit was a color photograph and verbal description of the metal hat insignia available by numerous manufacturers. This book is an invaluable reference source for anyone who collects or owns a military hat from this period.

Excellent reference.

This is a must-have for the collector of US military visor hats from the pre-World War II era through 1950. The work contains a huge number of high quality pictures of period hats. It has amazing variety for its narrow subject, and the author's collection is truly astounding. Examples run the gamut from more common to some very rare examples. I am an avid collector, and use Tonelli's book all the time. I do wish there was more commentary, for example describing construction techniques to help identify fakes. I would also enjoy some commentary on how he acquired this wonderful collection. Be careful, if you already are a collector, this book will likely contribute to the addiction.

Love, love, love

I am in love with this book. Contemporary figurative art - specifically painting - has always been a favorite genre of mine. And Lauren’s book tackles this topic with an astute eye and awesome energy. When I first got the book, I absorbed it only visually. My next dip into the book was focused on artists who really caught my eye. Artists like Chantal Joffe, Kerry James Marshall, Hope Gangloff, and Jenny Saville. My next read was cover to cover. I was hooked. Lauren does a beautiful job both informing and educating the reader. Whether you have deep knowledge of contemporary figurative art or the topic is brand new to you, this wonderful book will keep you engaged. And looking forward to another one by this talented writer and art expert.

Was touched and amazed by the artists works

I like realistic paintings and drawings and when I've seen "Bodies of Work", I was curious to know more about nowadays figurative art.

Through the different artists and sensibilities, I was amazed at the details of the portraits and their originality. You can feel the emotions coming from the subject who is posing, like he/she was completely naked in front of you.
For some models, it's literally true and the way the artist see the nudity is also interesting to look at.

The second part is about social art. A section probably more conceptual, more darker for some artists who use their brushes to make engaged art. A great way of expressing your opinions, your views through images.

An interesting art book where I've discovered a lot of great artists and their amazing work.

Such a great book

Far from a coffee table book, this is a wonderful resource for artists and will doubtless be a fabulous teaching aide, too. The book is a concise, broad and thoughtful review of the work of some of the world's most recognized figurative artists, and that of some less well known, working today. There's is no bias towards fame here, just a beautifully curated book complete with essays on each artist that reveal a level of understanding and sincere admiration for the work and practice of each artist. Satisfyingly rich with multiple images of each artists' work, unlike other books that provide only one or two examples per head.
