Unless you have a large Hubley collection,you'll see toys you probably didn't know existed. The photos and catalog reproductions are nice and clear.I was able to obtain the correct numbers for my humble Hubley car and truck collection.
You'll enjoy Steve's comments and descriptions. I never felt let down with any of his books. :))

A Must-Buy for Anyone Into South Beach Deco

I am a world-wide traveler and have a large collection of guidebooks that I usually purchase prior to taking trips. I purchased 'South Beach Deco,Step By Step' after I visited Miami Beach because it made me feel good about the times I had there and supplied information that I will use on future trips to South Beach. Ordinarily I skim a book until I find a particular area of interest, but I found myself reading this book straight through. It is fun to read and so informative at the same time. I loved the explanations of what tropical deco is, and I enjoyed gazing at the photos that are quite plentiful and vibrant. There is nothing boring about this book and it just makes me want to return to that part of the world as soon as possible. 'South Beach Deco, Step By Step' leaves the other books I have read on this area in the dust (or perhaps I should say sand). The reason being is that it has an excellent balance of information-- just enough history so that it never becomes boring, a sufficient but not overwhelming amount of recommendations so that it is not confusing, easy to understand definitions,and a smattering of humor which makes one smile. I will take it with me on my next visit.

A good picture book...

If you really want a book of color photos, get Iris Chase's new book South Beach Deco: Step By Step. Susan Russell took an amazing amount of great photos of South Beach.

Iris is the resident artist at the Art Deco Welcome Center smack in the middle of Ocean Drive and as she says it is "Miami Beach Art Deco 101."

She's written an easy-to-read good introductory text that lays out all of the areas, describes the fun aspects of hangin' out at The Beach, and has a modest bit of history. It's large size 8 1/2" x 11" makes it a big large to carry around but having it before hand will make it easier to find a hotel and figure out the sights and things you might want to do while there. And after you come home it will have all of the wonderful photos to help jog your memory.

South Beach Deco: Step By Step is for anyone who wants to remember SoBe as it is today (2005).

Seeing the Real South Beach

I visited South Beach recently and was at a loss of what to bring back as gifts for special friends. "South Beach Deco, Step by Step" was perfect. I got one for myself so I didn't have to take a lot of photos because this book has a great variety of pictures, many of the Art Deco Hotels which were a highlight of my trip. Aside from the great visuals, the text gave me all I needed to know to have a great time; it was like a companion who filled me in on everything - - the best things to see, the coolest places to eat and where to just relax and enjoy the scene. The book made me comfortable that I wasn't missing out on something ("what you didn't see..."). There are also some fun maps that are easy to read. All in all, an A+ and something I pick up and look at because its interesting and beautiful, and reminds me I want to go back to South

Beach.

Despite Flaws, A Pretty Good Guide

Let' get the bad news out of the way first: when the very first line of a book is an incomplete sentence, you know there are going to be problems following. And there are problems with this book, not the least annoying of which is that the authors have chosen to refer to the pieces in the collection not as they were described and sold by Avon, but, rather, as the authors think they should be described. Thus, the Heart Trinket Cox becomes merely "Box," the Footed Sauce Server becomes "Gravy Boat," etc. In other words, don't try to find information on your pieces by looking for their actual names. Instead, try to guess what the authors would prefer them to be called, and good luck to you!

There are numerous inconsistencies amongst the item descriptions. The most glaring of these include:

--Several pieces are described as being molded with the backstamp "© Avon," but this practice did not come into being until the later years of production, so there are many states of piecesthat do not include the © symbol. No mention or explanation is given for this.

--The book states that the Wine Decanter (or just "Decanter," as the authors would have it) is the only item produced with a matching red plastic insert, when in actuality, the shakers also include a red plastic insert.

--In one sentence the authors state that the Presidential Celebration edition of the wine goblet was only produced in 1976. In the next they say it was produced for four years.

--The Pedestal Mug is described as having been approved for production 7 months before it was actually designed.

--The authors state that the 1990 Christmas Ornament was the only non-dinnerware piece produced, forgetting the Heart Trinket Box, which is a vanity piece.

There are numerous mistakes such as these, and I realize, these are probably just nit-picky things, but the 2nd edition of the book claims to be "revised and expanded," and as far as I can tell, no revisions were made other than to update current market prices and add the original sale prices. For the serious collector, the errors and inconsistencies make for a questionable resource.

The good news is the information that is presented is mostly excellent, with good background information on almost every piece. The pricing guide is a real plus, and it is clear that the authors really did do their homework before writing the book, even if they did not proofread their final product. Working from limited resources, they have presented a fairly comprehensive guide to the Cape Cod collection, something no one else has done. The book is beautifully designed, with brilliant color photographs of each piece as well as design drawings from the manufacturer for several of the pieces, and good information about the molding processes for the entire collection.

This is the only book of its kind and as such it could be a lot worse. But it also could have been a lot better.

Missing Information

I bought this book with the idea that it would be a valuable resource for me when I sell some of my collectibles. While I did find most of my items and the current market value is there for me to sell or get insurance, the one thing I needed most was the issue price. I have no clue as to what I paid 25 years ago. No one thought to keep receipts back then. Since these items are considered collectible, IRS regulations require that it be reported on Schedule D and you pay tax on the gain. If you have no idea as to the cost, you end up paying tax on 100% of the sale price! Who wants to do that!!! If this book contained the issue price, that could be used as a cost basis.

Satisfying Insurance Requirements

The subject book is very well illustrated with actual photographs. The descriptions of each item are not consistent throughout. In some places dimensions are entered in fractions while in other places they are entered as decimals. We purchased the book to satisfy an insurance claim. Dimensions was one of the insurance requirements; however, none of the items in the book have their original cost which was also another requirement of the insurance forms.

In this generously- illustrated (375 color images) publication, the base of which was formed from the author's postcard, photograph, and memorabilia collections, Spencer (Ph.D., Computer Science), a renowned educator and writer, who has written over 200 books, many of which pertain to Florida, takes readers on a predominantly visual tour of Sarasota, Bradenton, and their surrounding communities. In the preface and part one of four, Spencer covers the early history of postcards, Florida, and the Sarasota-Bradenton area. In parts two and three, each of which is comprised of three chapters and forms the heart of the book, the author provides overviews of Sarasota and Bradenton as well as showcases their attractions, beaches, bridges, hotels, parks, public buildings, schools, streets, transportation networks, and more. NIghtfighters and more.

A history on U.S. Navy nightfighters has been long overdue for sometime. When most enthusiasts think of air warfare in the skies during WWII they only think of the massive aerial battles over England and Germany. Much of the technology that perfected the art of finding, sneaking up on and shooting down the other guy in the dark was developed for the need to stop Germany and Britain's night bombing campaigns against each other. However this part of the war has been covered ad naseum. Mr Carey has finally exposed a very interesting but not well covered part of the airwar at night in WWII that occured mostly over water. Yes, as modelers have known for awhile the U.S. Navy fought at night as well, with some very interesting equipment. This book covers a lot of interesting territory. Not only is it a book about the pilots who carried some hair raising missions in the dark, but much is here on the equipment too. While the story's are good its the amazing pictures that will keep you skimming through the pages time and time again.
As a scale modeler this is a book full of a lot of inspiration. Mr. Carey has assembled many valuable pictures that modelers can gain much from. Hellcats, Corsairs, Venturas and others are here. So if your looking for inspiration for that Eduard F6F Hellcat or Revell PV-1 this is a must book. Over all it is a valuable book for any WWII or Korea war historian or enthusiasts library.

Grumman's F6F-3E was the first single engine night fighter in the United States Navy. It was soon followed by the F6F-3N, while it's younger brother, the F6F-5N would become the most produced model,1,434, it would also be the best suited single engined night fighting aircraft to operate from the decks of our aircraft carriers.

The first night fighting victory came at the hands of the Navy's VF(N)-75.This came about on 31 October 1943, with the Vought F4U-2 and it's pilot doing the duties. The first United States Marine Corps night fighting kill came about on 13 November 1943. This was flown by VMF(N)-531 and the aircraft was a twin engined Lockheed PV-1 Ventura medium bomber.

Night fighting Hellcats and Corsairs carried more than their own weight in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Fifteen night fighting squadrons accounting for 239 aerial victories during World War II.

Grumman's twin engined night fighter entry, the F7F Tigercat made it's first appearance in the skies over Okinawa in August 1945. Major Bob Keller's VMF(N)-533 actually flew patrols over the island until September. They then took their F7F-2N's and moved on to post-war occupation of Northern China.

Mr. Carey's book covers the post-WW II progress of night fighter development. The venerable Hellcat eventually made way for the newer types and carried the ball admirably until the faster and more powerful jet aircraft made their debut. The newer models of the Vought Corsair served the Navy extremely well, especially during the Korean War of 1950 to 53. The Marine Corps and the Navy eventually brought in the Douglas F3D-2 jet night fighter. The Marine's VMF(N)-513 confirmed six kills with their jet powered night fighting aircraft from November 1952 to January 1953. At the same time, -513 also flew the veteran Vought F4U-5N.

The Navy put in their time flying the F3D-2 during the closing month of the Korean War, VC-4, Det. 44.They scored one aerial victory but it was a hollow victory as that F3D crew was lost during the mission.

Mr. Carey's book is an excellent chronicle of the USN and USMC night fighting history of the Grumman Hellcat and Vought Corsair fighters both in World War II and the Korean War. He also covers the deployments of these two great Naval fighters during the time they served in the service of other nations.
For those enthusiasts addicted to outstanding photos, this book is a treasure trove. The captions are first rate. It's twelve chapters should be the definitive book on the subject of Grumman's Night Fighting Hellcats and Vought's Night Fighting Corsairs.

The Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation, later Grumman Aerospace Corporation, was a leading 20th Century U.S. producer of military and civilian aircraft. Founded on 6 December 1929, by Leroy Grumman and partners, its independent existence ended in 1994 when it was acquired by Northrop Corporation to form Northrop Grumman.

During World War II, Grumman became known for its "Cats", U.S. Navy fighter aircraft, F4F Wildcat and F6F Hellcat, and the less well known Grumman F7F Tigercat and Grumman F8F Bearcat (neither of which saw combat during World War II), and for its torpedo bomber TBF Avenger. Grumman ranked 22nd among U.S. corporations in the value of wartime production contracts. Grumman's first jet aircraft was the F9F Panther; it was followed by the upgraded F9F/F-9 Cougar, and the less well known F-11 Tiger in the 1950s.

This book traces the development and operational history of radar-equipped night fighter aircraft produced by American aircraft manufacturers Grumman and Vought for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps before the advent of jet aircraft with similar nocturnal capabilities: the night variants of the Vought F4U Corsair, Grumman F6F Hellcat, and F7F Tigercat. The first commissioned squadrons to enter combat in late 1943 performed reasonably well, despite inadequate equipment and the inexperience of naval aviators and ground controllers participating in the new art of night aerial interception. Radar-equipped Grumman F6F-3E and F6F-3N Hellcats proved to be one of this country's best wartime shipboard fighters by acquiring the majority of aerial kills by U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aviators during World War II. In 1944, the F6F-5N appeared with provisions for 2,000 lb. bombs and 20mm cannon sometimes replacing the inboard wing's 12.7-mm guns. Production of the F6F-5N totaled 6,435 while 252 F6F-3s and 930 F6F-5s served with the British Fleet Air Arm as the Hellcat Mk1 and Hellcat Mk II respectively. Production of all F6Fs amounted to 12,275, and official figures credited the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aircraft with the destruction of 5,156 enemy aircraft in air combat, about 75% of all the U.S. Navy's air combat victories in the war. The Hellcat's greatest single victory was in the largest of all carrier operations, the Battle of the Philippine Sea, in which 15 U.S. carriers embarked 480 F6F aircraft (plus 222 dive-bombers and 199 torpedo-bombers). By the end of a week's fighting, Task Force 58 had destroyed more than 400 Japanese aircraft and sunk three carriers.

Partnering with the F6F Hellcat, was the distinctive yet unattractive with its inverted gull wing, the Vought F4U Corsair was unquestionably the best shipborne fighter of the war, and gained an 11:1 kill:loss ratio in the Pacific. Late in the war, a night-fighter version, the XF4U-2 saw limited service with the U.S. Navy's VFN-75 and VFN-101. Wartime production of the Corsair (which continued until 1952 with later versions) reached 4,120 F4U-1s, 735 F3A-1s and 3,808 FG-1s; of which 2,012 were supplied to the British Fleet Air Arm and 370 to New Zealand.

The immediate postwar years saw the development of jet aircraft, but such aircraft lacked the capacity to house period airborne radar sets, which were heavy, large systems consisting of vacuum tubes. Therefore, Grumman's F7F-3N Tigercat and Vought's F4U-5N/NL served as interim, short-term solutions until the arrival of jet fighters with night and all-weather capabilities. The F7F Tigercat was developed as a twin-engine multi-role fighter bomber for the U.S. Navy's new 45,000-ton "super-carriers." The first F7Fs arrived in the combat zone on 15 August 1945, the day Japan surrendered. Only about 100 F7Fs were produced before the war ended and most of these were the night-fighter version. While the 9-ton F7F wasn't the best interceptor, it was capable of many other tasks. It was the first U.S. Navy fighter that could carry a torpedo. Its maximum load was 2,000 pounds and its four 20mm cannon gave it substantial air-to-air firepower. Had the war continued, many more F7Fs would have been produced. As it was, the introduction of jet aircraft after World War II cut short the F7F's career. Only about 200 more were produced and it was finally withdrawn from service by 1952.

Impressive and Long Overdue!

Finally a great book on an often overlooked subject. Mr. Hewitt has made a great effort to get it right and it shows. This book will serve as a stand-alone reference on the subject. With wonderful color photos, supporting text, and several views of many items listed, this book will easily replace the "next best thing" and that book isn't even in English. Mr. Hewitt's attention to detail and collectors eye lend authority to the work. His passion for the subject is obvious on every page. If you want a solid reference on Imperial Japanese uniforms and equipment used during WWII, this book is it.

The definitive book on Japanese army uniforms and equipment

If you are a collector of Japanese WW2 military items, this is your book. Within this 288 page, richly illustrated book you will find almost everything you are looking for in one collection. The book is filled with photos from personal albums and the authors amazing collection of items. Items span from the war with China through 1945 when the war with America ended. Descriptions of the articles are well written. This is especially helpful when you are trying to figure out insignias and ranks for shoulder boards and collars on the tunic. There are also explanations for where different items were made for instance. The army is well covered with personal items included such as spoons, brushes, knives and bandages. Most people assume the Japanese only fought in warm climates. Their cold weather gear is well represented here too- when they fought in Kiska and Attu in the Alaskan chain or when they were fighting the Chinese. This would be a great book to begin your collecting with- you would know what to buy and look for. If you are like me and satrted your collection before buying this book, its equally great, because now you can go through each item and compare them to the many photos.

The book does not cover specialty wings of the Japanese military, such as paratroopers or Naval Landing Forces. You can find volumes in the Osprey Publishing lines to tide you over until something more detailed comes along. There is a small chapter on firearms, grenades, mortars, bayonets etc. But swords are not included. There are lots of books on that subject though.

I think this book although expensive for some, is invaluable and a resource you will always refer to. This is excellent.

Excellent pictures

Certainly by far the best in print book on the subject. Many good pictures and unlike many books by this publisher it actually has some worthwhile text.I would have like to have seen a little more on late war items and variations but this does not diminish the quality of this book, If you are interested in Japanese Army uniforms and equipment this is an important book to have .

EVERYONE should read this book!

This is a wonderful book!!! You really can make a difference in this world! We have become so accustomed to nodding our heads in agreement that action needs to be taken to alleviate the suffering in this world, and sit on our hands waiting for someone else to do it. This book should be required reading for every congregation in America. "If you think you're too small to make a difference, then try sleeping in a closed room with a mosquito." (African Proverb).

WARNING! You'll never be the same.

I have some confessions to make.

First off, I'm one of those millions of Christians living in America who donate time and money out of guilt and obligation. I have found peace of mind knowing that when I wrote a check, I could cross that off my list of "Christian things to do." Kind of a, "Whew! I'm glad that's taken care of" sort of attitude.

My next confession is that I'm absolutely paralyzed by the sheer enormity of the needs that exist in the world. I would often think to myself that I SHOULD do something more and would often talk about doing something more but was filled with self-doubt thinking, "what difference is it going to make anyway? I mean really, how is my pittance of a donation going to end poverty or cure aids or feed the World's hungry?"

Here's my last confession. I've held the opinion that I also struggle financially and my family's needs come first before anyone else gets a slice of my financial pie. Afterall, I've worked hard for what I have and I'm not about to put myself in dire straights because someone else didn't put in the same effort.

OK. Now that I've come clean, I have to admit that reading Hope Lives has changed my life and I don't make this statement lightly.

What this book has done for me is open my eyes and revealed to me what God has asked me to do; not from a position of guilt but rather from an expression of love and grace. Truth be told, I'm blessed. I mean truly blessed. Blessed that I live in America, blessed that I have the opportunities that I have and blessed that I've been given the God-honoring privilege to serve him. Through this book, my eyes were opened to the causes of poverty and I can honestly say that my heart has been changed and I'll never quite be the same.

In short, Hope Lives helped me recognize that God is on the move and he's weaving an amazing fabric that I play a small role in helping to weave. He isn't asking me to do EVERYTHING but he has put me in a time and place and has given the means to do SOMETHING. What I do with this opportunity is ultimately up to me.

The cover of Hope Lives refers to a "Journey of Restoration." I assumed "restoration" meant that the poor would be restored to self-sufficiency. What I didn't realize was that I was being restored and the greatest transformation was occuring within me.

I pray that this book does the same for you.

A "Gotta Read'

I am a pastor who leads a church that is committed to serving the poor, so this book didn't contain anything really "new", but it sure is POWERFUL.I personally found it very challenging (and convicting). We have also used the small group DVD in our church, and did a sermon series with the same topic (based on the useful pastoral resource). Our church has done other "40 Day"/all church things before- this honestly was the first one I REALLY enjoyed- mostly because the book was so well done. Awesome stories, great photos, wonderful quotes, helpful reflection questions and the author's honesty with her own struggles in serving the poor make this a worthwhile read as a stand alone book.

Identifying American Brilliant Cut Glass- Revised 5th Edition

This is a must-have book for ABP cut glass collectors. This revision corrects many errors, mis-identifications from the earlier versions. It has exactly the same photos as the previous versions but the print IDs and captions seem to incorporate most of the corrections listed earlier by ACGA and glass researchers in other publications.
