OUTSTANDING 2 BOOK SERIES

I recently received both books (A-M and N-Z) in this series and they are truly an outstanding set of books! I also own Brunialti's "Tribute To America" and "American Costume Jewelry 1935-1950" books but this series with newly updated and researched information along with 300 new photos is a collector's dream! Besides glorious photos, it provides patent information, detailed descriptions, along with any advertisement information these pieces were featured in. Anyone familiar with Brunialti's books, know they are not pricing value guides, but informative books designed to showcase the most highly sought-after collectible jewelry desired by a beginning collector to a seasoned experienced collector. Any true collector will appreciate having these books in their reference library.

Okay- But Heavy Hardcovers- Don't cover Many Manufactures

These books are more like coffee table books in my opinion- for instance neither the first volume nor the second volume cover Hattie Carnegie- except in passing. They literally, gave her less than a paragraph! Other companies, major names are covered to death, especially, the exceptionally high end pieces.

Again, a good reference book, pretty to look at, but unless you are a collector in the higher end items - I wouldn't advise rushing to buy this set.

Brunalti dedicated 100 pages to them while ignoring companies like Napier. But this book is a must for ...

This 2nd volume of the two book set by Brunalti could almost be called a Tribute to Trifari. Granted that Trifari was second only to Coro in production and is highly collected, but Mr. Brunalti dedicated 100 pages to them while ignoring companies like Napier. But this book is a must for anyone collecting or dealing in vintage costume jewelry. It has become the 'Resource' quoted to show authenticity. Mr. Brunalti did thorough research, showing patents along with the finished pieces, leaving no doubt as to which company produced each piece. One section at the end of the book covers all Jelly Bellies, or any Metal + Lucite jewelry that might possibly fall into that category. A smaller section shows posters from WWII and the jewelry inspired by our National pride. While I'm a little disappointed at the limited number of companies covered, the depth of material is excellent. Overall, I consider it money well-spent.

Fenton Art Glass: A Centennial of Glass Making

Very good book, loved the background on the artist who created the designs for the glass. Also like the way it was broke down into 10 year periods.

Did not bother to correct error from First Edition.... Uuugggghhh.

In the first edition of this book, I was horrified to see a photo of Jade and Black Fenton glass from the late 1920s and early 1930s, and right in the center of the picture is a McKee tumbler.... identified AS FENTON. It is very difficult to take this book seriously after such a mistake WAS NOT CORRECTED. Putting out a second edition is the opportunity to update your data and make corrections. To ignore your OBVIOUS mistakes is just plain wrong. I simply cannot recommend this book for anyone who actually knows anything about Fenton Glass, or who would like to learn anything about Fenton Glass.

Somewhat dissapointed.

I assumed this book would cover all the pieces to 2007. I find I'll have to purchase another catalog/book, etc. to get the information needed on the items I have. I would recommend the book if your interested in the history and many exhibits. If your looking for all your items, forget it.

Introduction

Does this scene sound familiar to you?

A family drives to church. Upon arrival, they grunt or nod at one another, then split off according to age or gender. Dad goes to the men's study group while Mom heads for the nursery, where she works as a volunteer. The teenage son strolls toward the youth building for his weekly "Hour of Power" while the two younger siblings go to "Kids' Club."

For years, this weekly breakup has been called "family ministry." Churches have prided themselves on offering a wide variety of "family ministry" programs and services, such as marriage retreats, parenting classes, youth service projects, and backyard Bible clubs for kids. Of course, these ideas are not bad. In fact, they're great! But they all operate under the same assumption: that the best way to serve families is to break them up into their respective "satellite" groups. Preschoolers go here, elementary kids over there, and youth way, way off over there. This approach can (and has) been effective at helping families. But it isn't always the best way. And, thankfully, it isn't the only game in town-not anymore.

Welcome to the new paradigm of family ministry! This new approach to family ministry is based on the simple but profound truth: There is power in letting families learn and grow together-as families. What would happen if you taught a Sunday school class that incorporated and involved every member of the family, a Sunday school in which families learned and studied and discussed things together? Churches that have tried this approach report that their families are growing closer, learning more, and getting stronger in their faith-just by doing things together at church. Consequently, more and more churches offer family-friendly events in which family members learn, worship, and serve together.

That's exactly why this book was created. In Fun Ideas for the Family-Friendly Church, you'll find learning activities to help family members explore the world around them and see how that world connects with God's Word, worship experiences that help families learn how to worship God together, service projects that challenge and equip family members to serve God and others, and relationship-building activities to draw family members closer to one another and to God. Fun Ideas for Family-Friendly Church gives you the tools you need to help families grow spiritually together as families and not just as individuals who happen to ride to church together.

Here are some tips to help you use the ideas in this book more effectively:

*If you don't already have an organized family ministry program in your church, start one. You may not be able to hire a family minister or allocate large sums of money to family ministry, but that doesn't mean family ministry is out of reach. All you need is monthly "family night" at the church and this book. Once you use the ideas in these pages, you'll soon discover a strong family ministry taking shape right before your eyes.

*Don't keep all the fun to yourself. Instead of trying to plan and lead all of these events yourself, invite specific families to take the lead in preparing some of these activities for the rest of the families in your church. Remember: Effective family ministry encourages families to do things together. So don't be afraid to let families lead families.

*Make room for every type of family you have. Not all families look alike, especially these days. In your church, you most likely have some single-parent families, some blended families, some extended families, some families with adopted children, and some families with no children at all. You'll also have some families with older teenagers and others with kids in preschool. Feel free to adapt the activities in this book to fit your particular mix of families. (In most cases, you can do this simply by modifying the discussion questions to fit the dominant age-level of your group.) And in those few cases where the activity is aimed at a particular age group, we say so-right in the "Family Focus."

*Don't single out the singles. If you have singles in your congregation, there's no reason why you can't include them in these family activities. Rather than relegating the singles to their own group (like "Friends"), encourage families to "adopt" one or more singles, then invite the singles to join in on the family activities. Not only will singles feel more a part of the congregation, but your families will also be enriched by the experience.

*Every now and then, use these activities to replace your regular Sunday school or Sunday evening schedule. Holding monthly "family nights" is a great idea. But it isn't the only way to use these activities. Every so often, shake up your regular schedule by having families meet together for Sunday school (or your Sunday evening worship time) so you can lead them through one of these activities. Doing this will help families see your commitment to family ministry and will enable them to get to know one another more effectively.

So, go ahead. Dive in to the ideas, and pick one or two you'd like to do soon. Once you get started, you'll soon create a family-friendly environment in your church that will help family members grow closer to one another and to God.

A colorful Russel Wright identification guide

-We think Keller and Ross make many beautiful arrangements and color-pairings as Russel intended
-A relatively lengthy book considering that it is intended for reference and identification purposes
-Very complete listing of lines as they are known to us today, including Mary Wright and others

Good book needs work...

Collectors really do need an ultimate compendium of Russel Wright's designs - this book isn't it, but then it doesn't promise to be. Photography proves to be both a strength and a weakness throughout. Photographs are numerous and sharp, but color is wildly inaccurate in some chapters (see "Cedar Green" looking grey). The irony is that so many of these photos are included for the purpose of showcasing color combinations. The other problem with the photos is that some of the most mundane single items get a half page photo while an important grouping of rarities gets a small one. This - and too much coverage of American Modern and Iroquois - was done at the expense of information about less common lines (particularly Knowles).
Not including a chapter about Wright's furniture designs is forgivable in a book about dinnerware, but why is there no coverage of flatware? I can't imagine that the size of the book would've been impacted much by its inclusion. Also, aluminum is featured, but there is no trace of the Chase chrome items.
The best feature of this book is its chapter about Highlight for Paden City. There isn't much information, but there are photos of extremely rare pieces. This is reason enough for an advanced collector to buy this book, but if you want a general guide or a better read, I'd stick to the latest edition of Ann Kerr's book.

A VERY INTERESTING LOOK AT THE NYC SUBWAY SYSTEM. I ENJOYED THE GREAT PHOTOGRAPHY. I HAVE NEVER SEEN A BOOK LIKE IT, PAGE AFTER PAGE OF AMAZING SHOTS. THIS BOOK WAS A DOSE OF HISTORICAL REALITY. IT REALLY TOOK ME BACK TO THE OLD NEW YORK. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BOOK.

Great photography

I like this book because it reminded me of growing up in NYC watching the subway trains. The pics were from the 70s and 80s so it was right in my timeframe. Also, some pics of slant R-40s and of course, the beloved R-1/9s. Great book.

During the 19th Century, the United States War Department segregated African-American troops into separate Army regiments in response to the separatist sentiments that were so endemic in North America. By the 1890s, many of the key members of the Army's High Command were white Southerners who staunchly advocated the precept that black troopers were inherently incapable of performing ably in combat. They had to be placed in segregated units where their inefficient habits wouldn't adversely affect their white counterparts. Thus, African-American units were assigned to combat support roles under the command of white officers.

Black draftees initially weren't properly clothed, fed, or housed. Many were left to fend for themselves under trees where there was no shelter. If tents were available, they usually lacked flooring of any kind. During the winter months, these same soldiers were often without stoves. Since mess halls for black soldiers were scarce, they usually had to bring their food back to their quarters. Water for sanitation was severely restricted. Black professionals, whether doctors or dentists, were refused commissions in their callings, often being drafted and used as laborers, despite the critical need for medical professionals.

Military training wasn't considered necessary for black soldiers because the Army had decided they were to be what most were in civilian life: laborers. A very serious problem was the inability of many black Americans to read or write properly, and they were therefore unable to complete the necessary paperwork in company or regimental offices. That predicament was evident in all black regiments and the two black (92nd and 93rd) Divisions.

Finally, the Army established a camp to train black officers at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, in May, 1917. African-Americans involved in the camp's development pressed for the appointment of Colonel Charles Young, the third black graduate of West Point, as its commander. Unfortunately, the Army didn't want any black Americans to be so highly placed. In the ensuing controversy, Young was found to have high blood pressure and therefore was retired. Another officer, Lt. Colonel Charles C. Ballou, was named to head the training camp since he had led the famed all-black 25th Infantry. However, while slightly more positive toward black Americans than most Army officers, he by his attitude conveyed the opinion that no one should expect too much from the camp's graduates. Their training was inadequate, almost farcical. Since the young black men were expected to fail, they were trained with that in mind and many did just that.

In the first month that the camp was open, 1,250 men arrived at Fort Des Moines for training. About 40% were college graduates; some were members of the faculty at Howard University; 50% had professional or business training. In addition, 250 were NCOs from the Regular Army, selected especially to add experience to the group, but experience alone wasn't enough.

When their training was over, the new officers were presumed to be ready for battle. Two divisions, the 92nd and the 93rd, were organized in 1917. The 92nd "Buffalo" Division was established on October 24, 1917, with inductees from all over the nation making up the units. General and field officers, plus officers above the grade of first lieutenant in the technical branches and the artillery were white. On October 26, Brevet Major General Charles C. Ballou, West Point classmate of General Pershing, took command of the 92nd at Camp Upton, Long Island. It was assigned to the VI Corps and on 10 June 1918, it sailed from Hoboken, New Jersey, on a nine-day voyage to Brest, France.

Upon arrival in France, the 92nd was transported by rail to the Allied 11th Training Area, near Bourbonne-les-Bains, for "seasoning." The 92nd comprised the 183rd and 184th Infantry Brigades, and the 167th Field Artillery Brigade, was assigned to Liggett's I Corps during the Meuse-Argonne campaign.

The 93rd Division, although established on November 23, 1917, with the 185th and 186th Infantry Brigades but no artillery brigade, never served in combat as a division. The four regiments of the division, 369th, 370th, 371st, and 372nd, had been brought into Federal service from the National Guard and served under the command of Brigadier General Roy Hoffman until May 15, 1918, when three of the regiments were placed under the operational control of the French Fourth Army. They were re-organized to conform to the French infantry organization. The 370th Infantry Regiment was assigned to the Seventh French Army.

After the Armistice, the largely untested 92nd Division was one of the first units returned to the U.S. because General Pershing wanted the division out of the AEF as soon as possible. Brevet Major General Ballou was removed from his post near the end of the war, and reverted to the rank of colonel after demobilization of the AEF. Members of the 93rd Division were re-assigned into the AEF, and they too were sent home, but with a better overall battle reputation and, consequently, higher morale. Unfortunately, when the returning black soldier arrived home, he found a nation that, if possible, was more racist than when he left.

WILLING PATRIOTS: MEN OF COLOR IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR tells the story of black Americans who served in the U.S. Army in the First World War. The book provides the reader deeply researched treatment of the organizations, combat history/battle participation of all balck troops including the two infantry divisions, supporting organizations of the Serices of Supply, and the special troops. Additionally, this work contains an exhaustive bibliography of primary and secondary references for each unit informing the reader of sources for further study; lavishly illustrated with nearly 300 detailed color and war-era photographs of these valorous men. These rare and previously unpublished photographs are drawn from public and private collections which provide a lens into this long forgotten aspect of World War I.

During World War I, 370,000 African-Americans labored, fought, and died to make the world safe for democracy that refused them equal citizenship at home. The irony was made more bitter as African-American soldiers struggled with the racist policies of the American military itself. Even though,the overwhelming majority were assigned to labor companies; they performed admirably under fire. This book is an unforgettable and accurate account of the African-American units that served with the AEF. This is an excellant companion to Schiffer's recently published THE ORGANIZATION AND INSIGNIA OF THE AMERICAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCES, 1917-1923.

A good piece of history on a little-known topic

I bought this book as a gift for my mother, whose father (George Harries) was a white man from the South and became a Sergeant in charge of a group of Colored Soldiers (that's a historical term, now...) in France. I only found this out about my grandfather a few years ago. This has helped me understand more about my family's values that I grew up with. I would like to see a sequel edition containing personal histories and stories gathered from the families of soldiers and officers involved. Realizing that all of the principal parties have been dead for years, it would have to be oral history passed down, but it would still be fascinating to hear the different stories and perspectives. Much of this book is statistics (unit XXX served YYY from **** to ****). Still, it is the only book I know of to treat the "Soldiers of Color In The Great War" subject in any depth.

A few Winick projects...that's it.

I bought this book because we wanted to remodel the interior of an Airstream and we thought this book would give us plenty of good ideas. I mean, after all, the book is called Airstreams Custom Interiors and it's David Winick! Well, it's actually just a photo journal of a small handful of customization jobs that Winick did on a few antique (and very small, I might add) Airstreams.

It's not really a book stuffed full of tips and great ideas as the title would have you believe. It's a small collection (I think somewhere around 3 to 5) tiny antique trailers that Winick remodeled. The photos show you what the job looked like in various stages and the final outcome. It's one of those books that you would look at for 15 minutes while you finished your coffee at Barnes & Noble. Certainly not worth the money being charged for this book. Like they say, "You can't judge a book by its cover"...No kidding! I could have saved myself some money if this one had a more accurate title.

This book is a tremendous disappointment. I bought this book because I wanted to see interiors and it includes precious few. There are lots of photos of exteriors and close-ups of gleaming pieces of metal, but not interiors. I've purchased hundreds of books, but this is the first one I've ever wanted to throw in the trash right after I got it.

Amazing!

David Winick is an amazing craftsman! Yes, I'm biased as I am a proud owner of a Winick Bambi, but I highly recommend this book be added to your collection. Similar to his outstanding work on Airstreams, those sleek, iconic American gems rolling down the road, this book is beautifully presented and is a MUST HAVE for anyone interested in Airstreams, and especially for anyone contemplating their own renovation. David provides terrific before & after photos and shares his knowledge of taking trailers through the resto process. I especially love his brutal honesty when he says something is, "butt ugly", and therefore should be crafted into something more palpable (dinette & refrigerator). You will not be disappointed in this book!

About the Author
Maurine St. Gaudens, a historian, scholar, and proponent of the arts, has dedicated herself to the pursuit and recognition of artists. She is a fine arts conservator and has curated numerous exhibitions.

Fascinating reading......

These books are stunning....with broad appeal to art lovers, collectors. curators and libraries. Maurine St. Gaudens has achieved a new milestone in women’s art research with these four volumes. The vast number of images includes photographs of the artists and their work, signatures and personal ephemera. Their stories are fascinating and leave you wanting more. The details add to the essence of the tales; the inclusion of holiday cards sent by the artists enhances the reality of their life and times. You can open to any page and become immediately engulfed in an artist’s life:

There are the Bruton sisters: Esther, Helen and Margaret, each following her own path, but with a strong familial artistic streak. They shared a studio in California, studied together in New York and Paris, and traveled throughout the Southwest. In 1939 the sisters received a joint commission for Peacemakers, an 144 x 57 ft. mural for the Golden Gate International Exposition. They eventually moved to northern California and set up their respective studios where they worked for the remainder of their lives.

Ruth Asawa survived the prejudices of being of Japanese descent in World War II, being interned in a camp in Arkansas and the hostility after the war which prevented her from obtaining the college degree she was entitled to in Milwaukee. It was arranged for her to attend Black Mountain College in North Carolina where her instructors included Josef Albers, Merce Cunningham and Buckminster Fuller. This environment gave her the confidence to pursue a career as as artist. Ruth and her husband Albert Lanier moved to San Francisco and raised six children. Her work is on exhibit in the new Whitney Museum in New York.

Lucretia Le Bourgeois Van Horn had a life that lends itself to a full length film. Born into wealth and privilege her childhood was devastated by tragedies. She went to France after art study in New York and became the first woman to win their highest prize in 1904. Returning to the states she met Douglas MacArthur, then an aide to President Theodore Roosevelt. She resisted his proposals and later married another military aide to the President. In the 1920s she met Diego Rivera who had a significant impact on her work. Her work evolved through the turmoil of her life.

The evolution of Emerging from the Shadows began with the author’s recognition of the obscurity of most of these women of talent. This compelling story of how they continued their passion for their work throughout their lives through education, marriages, motherhood, travels, and careers. The diversity of the works shown extends its appeal to readers, collectors, and researchers.

Although the author includes some artists of recognition such as E. Charlton Fortune, Agnes Pelton, and Mabel Alvarez, her persistence in following the more unrecognized women sheds new light on these creative artists. (I personally hope this will open a portal to some further research on some of these women. Some are so intriguing they would warrant a book.)

In Volume IV there is the mystery of Paula Zen. St. Gaudens admits to her quest to find out more information in the future. The mystery is contagious......I want to know more.

Every library needs these books and these volumes would make an exceptional gift for the art lover in your life.
