Wow. Lampshades are not as interesting as I thought.

I actually rented this book from the library, along with several others that I am giving the exact same review.

After reading and reading and googling and googling, I can tell you that the best way to learn how to make a lampshade has to be in a class or from a friend, because learning out of a book is a joke. I realize that now.

None of the pictures in any of these books blew my mind. They were pretty for the most part, but also tired and boring at the same time. Dont waste your money. You will find just as much online for free.

Regret buying it.

I thought it was going to be more about the construction of the lamps and shades. It turned out to be more about styles of shades and lamps. The title is slightly deceiving. It has some instructional guide but it is poorly written and shown with little crude drawings. There are not that many books to choose from though so I chose the one with the title that seemed to be pertinent to what I was trying to learn. Mistake. Also, if there was someother way to see inside the book better, I would have bought a different book.

Connecting the dots

The author does a nice job of connecting up some of the odd events that have happened in and around Freetown, Massachusetts over the years. The first half of the book recounts mostly Native American connections to modern day ghostly sightings while the second, more interesting half goes into detail about the occult activity that may be occurring in the Freetown State Forest and possibly in the town as well. Paranormal buffs should find the slightly off beat events intriguing, however the constant spelling and grammatical mistakes are a significant nuisance to the reader. Simple proof reading and editing would have solved this glaring problem but unfortunately Dark Woods reads more like a rough first draft than a polished final product. However, if you can ignore these constant speed bumbs, you may find the book rather enjoyable.

The book was well written and included interesting facts about Southeastern Massachusetts. If you've ever been interested in the events that happened in the Freetown State Forest, this is a book that will deliver! Research was painstakingly done and brings about many facts about this area that will chill your bones! I highly recommend it!

This book is awesome, there is pretty much every piece of clothing issued to the germans in the african or tropical theater. The photography is of the highest level, and the period ones equally good and informative. The captions are clear and some times funny. Some items in this book are totally new to me, like the cloth washennets. This book is worth every cent, for fans of the D.A.K. is a must have, get it now.

I agree with the other reviewer, not much writing here. But this book is a HOME RUN with pictures - probably one of the best WW2 uniform books I've owned or seen. There is a tremendous amount of content, more than enough to justify its cost.

Mike McCabe is one of the best writers on the history of tattooing in the New York City area. A gifted tattooist himself, McCabe combines an insider's knowledge of the tattoo community with the astute observations of a professionally trained cultural anthropologist. Whereas his previous book, New York City Tattoo, looked at the history of tattooing in New York, Tattooing New York City, critically examines current tattoo studios in the Metropolitan area. Like his previous book, Tattooing New York City is a valable contribution.
While one could quibble with the tattoo studios selected and amount of space he devotes to each, the book is an ambitious undertaking. Indeed, McCabe sets out on a Herculean task, one that few could accopmplish. In this, his book is far superior to other such survey books in that his book is not superficial. It is a testment to his success that McCabe's book will appeal to those who know virtually nothing about tattoo studios in the New York area and those already intimately familiar with the tattoo community. Given this, I would highly recommend this book for a very wide an audience--those who have tattoos, those that are interested in tattoos, and even those who simply want to look at photographs od tattoos. McCabe is to be applauded for writing a first rate book and I look forward to more such studies in the future.

Learning to Unlearn

I usually read a book of 175 pages in 2 - 5 days, however it took me 3 weeks to read this book. The reason is because I had to stop and think, ponder and strive to understand how the principles presented would change my life and ministry. I read many paragraphs 2 or 3 times as I hungered to ingest and internalize these "street level" principles for ministry that really touches people where they live. I highly recommend this book to anyone who feels unchalleged by the ministries and purpose of their local church. "Unlearning Church" is a book that will stir your heart to both experience and live out real faith and purpose.

Mike Slaughter has been one of the most articulate voices of the emerging church movement and his work at Ginghamsburg UMC has been liberating for many of us in the mainline denominationns.

Slaughter emphasizes the need to develop a church that takes seriously the mission to embody Christ in a way that responds to the culture the church finds itself in. This is more than the use technology and contemporary stuff approach, moving on to an organic embodiment of the kingdom. Slaughter says that the answers of Ginghamsburg are not necessarily your (or my) answers as that may not be authentic for our situation. He says to do this we have to unlearn church as we know it.

He mixes his insights with stories of churches that he considers to be effectively unlearning church and a series of questions at the end of each chapter to encourage the reader to actively unlearn what he/she "knows" to be true

My only problem with the book is that I've heard it in so many venues that it did not seem new, but that is more my issue than Slaughter's

Carving Inspiration

This book is written for collectors but as a woodcarver, I appreciate the history of woodcarving that is a part of this book. The book is filled with great color photos of carvings done over many years. On the downside, it cost me more money because after reading it, I ended up going to ebay and bidding on several anri carvings. I did note than a number of the carvings for sale were being sold by the books author.

Worth every star of the five available.
The pictures are full color and gorgeously detailed.
The clear organization of an impossibly expansive list of Anri products makes the information comprehensible.
The text accompanying the pictures is clever without being cutsy.
The wealth of knowledge the authors share with the reader is amazing.
The nutshell of the history of ANRI whetted my curiosity to learn more.
There is a small negative to the quality of the book: occasionally the L - R orientation is reversed from the copy to the picture.
On a personal level, I was disappointed in the book. I am not a collector of stoppers, corkscrews, nutcrackers, etc. The coffee table price made me wish I could have found this encyclopediac tome in a library somewhere. It did not yield me the good internet links into other ANRI styles and figurines that I had hoped to find.

one of the best game resources out there.....

I've gone through a lot of books for games for children, and this is one of the best. I think I've used it every Sunday. The games are simple to understand, and they actually go with a bible lesson, usually a particular verse. There are questions for reflection, and the set up and materials needed are easy. I usually have to modify the games a little to fit my children and my lesson, but I like the ideas. I also like the number of categories and themes the games are divided into! If you only want one book of games for children, get this one. It is the easiest to use, has the best ideas and games, and the best divisions- and it comes with a cd so you can put it on your computer and print stuff out and make copies. this is one of the best Group resources I own.
