Sunday School Specials is excellent.

We have used this already, developed collection of Bible Lessons. What an absolute fun way to learn about God. The attention grabbers are superb. Many times we utilize the basics--bible study, life applications, commitment,etc. and gear the presentations to the different age levels. Our teacher volunteers state that they have as much fun as the children. We've used books #1 #2 and #4. We would like to have a copy of #3.

As a serious carver and instructor at various carving clubs, I have found this book to be a exceptional tool.

The assortment of wildlife patterns allows selection and detailed plan to create a replica for personal enjoyment or gift.

I highly recommend it to the novice or master carver alike and am sure they will find a pattern to challenge their ability therein.

Not for beginners

I'm an artist of 25 plus years with skills in drawing, painting, airbrush, some sculpting and very little in detailed carving. I chose this book to gain a strong baseline for carving. While the patterns in this book are nice they lack the detail needed for a beginner. There are no measurements or dimensional ratios that I could fine for any project in this book. The only photos of finished projects are on the cover and they're small. All of the patterns lack the beginning stages of carving, save one. Pages 74 - 76 is the only representation of how to begin your carving. It demonstrates this on one animal only; the Buck. I fully expected all patterns to contain the beginning stages and photos of the finished sculpture. Also, this book concentrates on birds more than any other animal. About 50 - 60 percent of it is on bird carving. I was looking for a good representation of many animals. This was very disappointing for me.

So, if you have carved before, this book may be for you. Otherwise, you may want to consider another carving book. I will be sending this one back.

Best gift I ever gave my Dad

I bought this book "Carving Patterns" by Frank C. Russell as a gift for my Dad. My Dad has been a wood carver since he was a little boy and has been collecting wood carving books for years. He told me that this book By Frank Russel is the best book in his collection. I've never seen my Dad so excited over a book. I can't get him away from it.

DETAILED. I use this as my detailed reference whenever I find pieces at estate sales or garage sales. When it comes to pictures, it's okay; but it has detail and history that most reference books don't.

The *Definitive* Fiesta Reference Book

This book, by far and away, is THE BEST for the collector of Homer Laughlin colourware. It has an amazing amount of detail and answers almost every question a person could ask about the dishes named in the title. Measured line drawings are an invaluable help for both the novice and seasoned collector. And it is quite a treat to see photos of nearly every piece in all glaze colours. I found the price guide to be a major improvement over most, as each piece is priced individually by colour.
Readers are treated to a wonderfully accurate history of the dishes. Several rumours that have circulated among the collecting community over the years are laid to rest. The fact that the authors had access to both Frederick Rhead's journals and the HLC modeling logs resulted in a book that is sure to become "The Fiesta Bible".
It is quite refreshing to be able to consult a reference for information, and know that it is factual and free of some author's prejudice and innuendo. This particular book sets a new standard for what collectors' books should be. A MUST BUY!!!

Get the Huxford One First

This is a fine quality coffee table type book, with heavy paper and nice color reproduction. If you are an advanced collector who owns every book about Fiesta as well as every piece of Fiesta, you will want this book.
If you are a new collector who has absolutely no idea what any thing is, have no assortment of Fiesta to look at as you read and have no spatial visualization skills, you will want this book because it very pedantically gives every measurement every which way so that you can figure out that your plate that measures 9 5/8 inches is ... surprise commonly called the 9" luncheon plate, and not some "rare, unknown, experimental" due to that extra 5/8". In fact, if you are given to such flights of imagination, especially when pricing your items for sale, please buy this book.
If you are the average collector who falls in the middle, who has seen a set or two of Fiesta, or owns some already, who knows the difference between a bowl and a cup, the tried and true Huxford book, also out at this time in a new edition at about ... and in stock at ..., is the more standardly used alternative, and the one that all but the most novice collector would probably find the better value.

If only I would've come across the other review before I bought this book... I agree with every thing the other reviewer said, but she was much nicer about it than she should've been. This book is not worth the paper it's printed on. The ONLY "plus" to this book? Oh wait, there isn't one.

Also, even though this is being posted on April 1, this is no joke; This book is garbage.

Save your money and buy a real book!

I do not recommend this book to anyone, not even a seasoned collector. The photography is terrible, meaning it's out of focus, dark, full of glare or horribly off color. If you were a beginner collector looking at this book, you would be inclined to think the pattern Wheat was tinted greenish-blue. Or that Anchor White was light blue. I did note that there seemed to be no credit taken for the photos. No wonder. Someone should be ashamed of taking such horrible pictures to be published in a collectors guide! If I could give this book a minus rating I wouldn't hesitate.

Invest in one of the better ones.

This book stinks. What a bummer. There was one picture of azurite, a saucer, and 1 picture of rosite- a swirl mixing bowl.Far from comprehensive, the prices were way off, many of the pictures are too dark to really see the color. Many of the dates are missing or are very broad. Not worth it at all. Invest in one of the better ones.

Great Photos

Hooked Rugs Today is a wonderful book full of amazing photos for beginner to advanced rug hookers.

The Green Mountain Rug Hooking Guild sponsors this show that used to be held annually at the Round Barn in Shelburne, Vermont. Some of the best fiber artists in the world feature their art at this show so the works in this book are not just your ordinary hooked rugs.

There are several books by Amy Oxford on this same category featuring the same show but not the same rugs. I own every one of them; they are valuable teaching aids for any rug hooking teacher.

Not my learning book

I thought I was buying a rug hooking book, with instructions, step by step pictures. But not. After buying Amy Oxford needle I thought her book was the best way to start learning her technic. Instead, the book only have pictures of multiple rugs from an exposition.

Not a good guide, poor editing, sad pictures, dissappointment

I bought this book almost a year ago to assist me with collecting G1 ponies. I have to admit, the book is full of helpful color pictures, but it is sad to see the ponies in such ratty condition. The worst part is that nearly every pony is stood on an upside down pony crib as a "stand" of sorts. The book seems somewhat disorganized. Also, parts of the book include phrases such as "I think it came with..." or "I'm not sure if..." This leads me to believe the book was not edited very well. The author also makes-up names for certain ponies, which is very annoying.

The price guide is worthless. She gives pricing by the condition of the pony, but never defines what those conditions will look like. Just look on Ebay if you want to see the market price of a paticular pony.

I've seen many better MLP guides on the internet.

If you can't resist buying this book, at least get a used one. It is definitely not worth the retail price.

To conclude, the book is full of pictures and information, but don't rely on it as a single all knowing resource.

2 stars for a nice attempt, but it simply doesn't make the grade.

Great photos! Inaccurate information

I'm a sucker for pretty pictures, and this baby's chock-fulla 'em. Aside from the distracting neon pinks and blues, the identification was mostly correct. Some names were wrong, the prices are SERIOUSLY off, and it's missing a large portion of accessories.

Pony prices are mainly determined by Ebay and what newbie collector is willing to blow on a beat-up Applejack--sure she's cute, but is she worth $20? Prices seemed fairly flat-rate in the book, and though helpful in bartering prices, they mostly just make the antique/resell collectors all googly-eyed and claim that their chewed up 2nd issue Cotton Candy is worth $15 because she's 'collectable'.

And yet I still adore the pretty pictures.

This book is an all-in-one party! Chick Flicks 2 came just in time! We've used nearly every movie in the original Chick Flicks book, and these Dinner and a Movie resources from Group have us spoiled. I've been asked several times "what movie would you suggest we use for a movie night?" and I always wonder why someone would want to choose a movie first and then create an event around the movie when it's already completely done for you. Great movies, great planning, great fun!

Very nice book, not quite what I needed

I agree with a review I read earlier here that said this is more of a coffee table book than a reference. It has nice photos, and if you read the text, there is some good and knowledgeable information. If you collect or resell costume jewelry, it will help you to recognize specific pieces that are pictured, and give them the label of "book piece." But what I really wanted, and have yet to find, is a book on costume jewelry that will be truly helpful in identifying unsigned pieces and in assigning an approximate date to pieces, and also in learning something about the less famous companies. I wanted help with "mystery" pieces. This isn't that book.

Masterpieces of Haitian Art

Human dignity and courage have found no greater voice in the wake of wholesale social tragedy in this century than in the copiously illustrated, scholarly written book by Candice Russell entitled, "Masterpieces of Haitian Art." Drawing on her intimate knowledge of these artists and their working environment, Ms. Russell describes how this art is created by individuals who cast their sensibilities and skills - even their identities - into dark, uncharted waters, and then reel in little hints and clues of what lies hidden in the form of lively and exotic paintings and sculpture.

The art historical and multi-cultural communities have long waited for a survey of this caliber which celebrates an art that puts human emotion and experience before formal concept, dogma, or style - an art designed to gain our complicity in matters of social, spiritual and political concerns.

A Sears catalog lookalike of Haitan art.

I only gave it an extra star because of the photograph of my friend and guide in Haitian art Dr Carlos Jara in the beginning pages of the book. This great friend and advocate of Haitian Art deserved a better book than this one though.
The book lists the artists alphabetically "for easy access to specific artists", thus entirely missing out on movements in Haitian Art, associations of painters, and any chronological context.The author's assertation that every work represented in the book is "a masterpiece", makes one wonder, especially when one would expect that if the author really meant this, she would have taken more care with the colour reproductions, which in several cases (Salnave Philippe Auguste,Brochette,Jorelus Joseph and Byron in particular) are a far cry from the original palette.
The author's assertion that this book will help with the "de-mystifying of the religion of Vodou" and then devote 1 (one) page to this and a couple of captions, is perplexing.
One reviewer called this a " scholarly written book".I guess he is living in a different universe.
If you want to learn about Vodou, buy Sacred Arts of Vodou by Cosentino.If you're interested in the history of Haitian Art buy Haiti ,Where Art is Joy by Selden Rodman , a bit outdated , but still a good read. There's also an excellent catalog of a recent exhibition (2013) : Kafou, with excellent reproductions.

A Visual Feast of Haitian Art

I just got a copy -- Of the 256 12 x 9 inch color pages, 162 pages are paintings reproduced 1 or 2 per page in alphabetical order by painter, 23 pages are Vodou flags also alphabetical by maker (Candice is truly an impressively expert collector of Vodou flags), 12 pages of well selected metal sculptures, 8 pages of notably well photographed papier-mache sculptures, 4 pages of wood sculptures,and 11 pages of beautiful mixed-media works.There are some words in the book, paragraphs here and there, yet it is primarily a book of images, a visual feast. Everyone will find a never-seen-before favorite (for me so far that would be the full-page Neptune with La Sirene by Salnave Philippe-Auguste on page 25). And some may feel sad that their favorite Haitian painter did not get included among the approx. 100 who are represented by 1 up to 4 beautiful images. For myself, Dieudonne Cedor is my top missed favorite, while others might miss different artists who also started painting in the 1940s such as Georges Remponeau, Petion Savain, Fernand Pierre, or Gabriel Leveque (see them via GOOGLE images and in older books such as La Peinture Haitienne: Haitian arts (French Edition) and Haitian art: The legend and legacy of the naive traditionand Where Art Is Joy: Haitian Art: The First Forty Years... but one can think of this inclusion issue as testimony to the wonderful depth and breadth of Haitian painting ... and of course the author was limited by who would make which paintings available for reproduction in her book!! She did a wonderful piece of work for all of us to enjoy -- an artistic labor of love. We must hope for more Haitian art books to come before too long. I certainly recommend this book wholeheartedly -- Thank you Candice.

Not Worth the Money

I purchased this book thinking that it would be helpful to me in my quest to identify Sarah Coventry jewelry. It has many lovely pictures, but hardly any names for the jewelry pieces shown. Since Sarah Coventry named so many of their items, I think it is necessary to have those names associated with the pieces. It does me no good to see a picture of what I already have and still cannot name it. The most helpful part of this book is in the back where the author has pictures of Sarah's catalog pages 1976, 1978, and 1980. Jewelry can be identified there if you have a magnifying glass. Also, I believe the author has unrealistic values on the jewelry shown. I see sets that she has valued at $45-$65 selling online for much less.

For any even quasi-serious collector, this book is worse than unhelpful; it is erroneous. Less than 10% of the pieces are identified...and some of them improperly. One of the most iconic designs, "Midnight Magic" is identified as "Midnight Madness", twice. The "Pearl Flight" pin is described as a 'shell design pin'. Most pieces are simply described, for example, as 'necklace and matching bracelet.' No dates are referenced. A tremendous disappointment. You can learn much more about Sarah Coventry jewelry on ebay and Google. One plus...it's a great workbook for writing in your own identifications and catching the author's errors ;-)
