If you love action movies, you must get this book!

I love action movies. I have written action movies and I thought that I knew a lot about them and that I had seen most of the ones made. Then I got David J. Moore's book and discovered boy, was I wrong! The book is a veritable encyclopedia of the action movies of the last 50 years. Some were old favorites, some I had heard about, some I had forgotten, but there were literally hundreds that I didn't know existed. Besides featuring new reviews of all of the films, there are revealing interviews with many of the people who wrote, produced, crewed, directed and starred in them. If you love action movies, you must get this book. As for me, I'm heading back to the Blu-ray player and a stack of newly discovered action DVD's I can't wait to see.

Has Merits but Very Disappointing

I wanted to give this a 2 1/2 out of 5 stars. But since there is no way to do that on here...I had to think and choose on whether to go in the 'did I enjoy it' or 'I didn't like it' direction.

Considering how long I looked forward to this book? I was more disappointed than pleased.

The Good: Lot of great pictures (and in color...most books go for black and white. So it was refreshing to see colored photos, posters, etc. throughout). Interviews with a lot of great action folks (Jeff Speakman, Cynthia Rothrock, and more) are interspersed among the reviews. It is definitely filled with a lot of reviews for many films in the action genre.

The Bad & Disappointing: You folks out there would not know this unless you actually have the book (in order to read the intro). But this book is fashioned with a certain criteria which I find very...confusing and most of all maddeningly frustrating. As one good guy I know put it, it is at times very narrow-minded.

I don't mean that as a knock against the person personally. As another good guy I know puts it, it's the authors prerogative to have whatever guidelines he wants for his book But because of certain bits of criteria on who Is and who Isn't an Action star (and the reasons given for said criteria, which again the author explains in the book...I just very much disagree with it), people like Mel Gibson, Bruce Willis, Clint Eastwood, and Kurt Russell are not considered 'action stars'.

And because of the 'at times narrow' guidelines that the author himself inflicted onto it? You have an Action Movie Book which:

Features No Die Hard films (1-4).
Features No Lethal Weapon 1-3 (but it has Lethal Weapon 4...again, because of certain 'criteria')
Features No Matrix films.
Features no Conan (because 'sword and sorcery movies' were excluded).
Features No Indiana Jones films.
Features No Dirty Harry films.
Features barely any James Bond films...only a few like Spectre (because wrestler Dave Bautista was in it).
Features No Mad Max films.
Features No Robocop films.
It features the second Ninja Turtles film (since Ernie Reyes Jr. is in it)...but Not the original 1990 Ninja Turtles or part 3.
If features No Predator 2...and yet Predator and Predators are in it (because one has Arnold, the other has Danny Trejo aka one who the author deems as an Action Star).
It features No Escape From New York.
Karate Kid 1, 3, and the remake are in it...but no Karate Kid Part II or 4. Why? I have no idea.

Yes...I do think it is a disservice to have a book that wants to give a love letter to action films (perhaps the author is more in the meaning on Action Stars of a certain type). But it says Action Stars AND Films.

Perhaps these guidelines were put upon for the fact that it would be an extremely phenomenal task to review every single Action Film Ever Made.

But then people should know what they are getting from the beginning. If I had known that I was buying an book about Action Movies, and yet All Time Action Movie Classics like Robocop, Die Hard, The Road Warrior, Escape from New York, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Lethal Weapon, and so forth are not included? Then I would not have spent over $40 on it (at the time I had bought it, that was the price...I see that it is at $36 as I type this. I still stand by my words).

Let alone disregarding sequels because of said 'certain & specific criteria'. It just looks silly to have it go from a part 1 to a part 3 in a franchise...making the reader go 'wait a minute, where's part 2?' (for example, going from The Karate Kid, to the remake, and then to part 3. Or just having Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 and that's it...no part 1 let alone 3).

Another critique. The book is advertised as having reviews. And yes, a lot of them are (I can't knock someone for a personal opinion aka 'they didn't like what i liked, or vice versa'). But some of these reviews are barely even reviews...for example, Broken Arrow. A film directed by John Woo and starring John Travolta and Christian Slater. The entire paragraph of the review for the film is spent on talking about Howie Long, Howie Long, and Howie Long...that's the only thing that gets talked about during the 'review' of Broken Arrow. It's not even said whether the person liked or disliked the movie.

So granted, I think it would have been a nice book to pick up for $15 or such. It has plentiful of movies that it does talk about, some very nice interviews, and colorful photos and pictures. But, in my own opinion, the criteria and 'direction' that the author wanted to go with (thus not including some of the all time Classic Action Films, let alone others that I didn't mention which were also excluded...as well as the 'some sequels, some not; some just the sequel and not the original; etc.') made the book both annoying and disappointing. This is my biggest gripe about it. And some of the reviews are questionable (again, not in the 'they liked/didn't like it, I disagree, so boo hoo' category...but more in the 'is this even a review ala the one for Broken Arrow' category).

Bottom line...when I buy a book involving the genre of action movies, and yet it doesn't feature films like Robocop, Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, the Indiana Jones films, Dirty Harry, or The Road Warrior? Then the book is, at the end of the day, a Fail. An interesting fail with merits to it, but a fail nonetheless. But hey, that is just my opinion on it. Feel free to make your own decision on the matter.

TOUGHEST, COOLEST book on action films ever!

Now as my eyesight worsens, reading becomes much more difficult and selective, so that may indeed be why I love HD televisions and nicely remastered action, cult, and exploitation films on blu-ray, many of which are sadly out of print or never to be released even properly in wide-screen uncut on dvd... like, ever. So if you love books and films about action, and the wonderful over the top grindhouse/exploitation action thrillers from the 1960s til now-ish... well here is THE epitome of indexes for such films, a HUGE thick coffee table book, with wonderful full color photos mostly, and just a handsomely designed hardcover edition to be poured over and over for lost treasures... Like the film Excessive Force from the 90's? It's in here, along with some simply superb essays and reviews and interviews. Mannnnnnnn... some great interviews, too. This is the action index fans of this genre of the kick-Splode!!! high and low budget kickass action genres will love. I am 42, and I love it. Now over over 90 pages in, I had to jump around hunting for dvds that are wayyyyyyy out of print.
Blu-ray companies and libraries take note: film fans of the action genre MUST HAVE this book.
Greattttttttttt job, Mr. David J. Moore. A lot of very hard work went into this epic book on action films. I love it. Good job.

This book explains how do detect Fenton glass very well. This is a difficult glass to identify sometimes because of the lack of markings. Very good book for the new or old collector. Would recommend to anyone!

Gorgeous photography!

There's lots of new wares covered in this book, and it's probably the most up-to-date. Would like to see a book covering this past 10 years, up to closing of the Fenton art glass factory. Many pieces that have sat in their inventory are being offered now, and it would help serious Fenton collectors update their collection's information. This is an exciting book, and I'm sure the values on many pieces have increased since this book was published.

About the Author

Two Great Artists

I'm not just a fan of the book, I'm a client who is happy to return to Chris Alexander over and over again. In fact, the stencil of one of my custom designed tattoos is listed on page 50. I took a dragon's head statue into Chris, and he designed it up for me with no problem. It was, in fact, created as a cover-up, and I wish they had included before, during, and after photos to show what a great job he did. I get complements on it all the time.

I really like the ideas in this book, it is great having the outlines as well as the shading and color pics, that always makes it easier when someone chooses one for a tattoo. It was shipped very quickly and was packaged very well. I had a very nice experience with this order.

But within this well researched and timely book, one won't find the usual photographs taken in the many theaters of war but studio portraits, specifically wedding photographs. The reader will see the other side of the soldier-his hopes, dreams, fears, and joys not just the uniforms, weapons, and equipment, that is often seen in other works of this type. The German soldier was a disciplined warrior who shared deep emotional bonds with his home community. Included in this book are chapters on Documents, the Kriegsmarine, Heer, Luftwaffe, and SS and Polizei to name just a few. While this book isn't the traditional combat photographs, it still offers a small glimpse of both family and the social side of military service in the Third Reich. An excellant and much needed reference book on a much overlooked topic.

A photographic treasure

This is a beautiful book and for me it is well worth the purchase price. It is a wonderful time capsule of the various uniforms and dress styles of the era as well as a poignant look at happy and contented people most of whom had unknown horrors ahead of them. It puts a truly human face on the German side of the war and those caught up in it. While some of the subjects were undoubtedly in favor of Hitler's insane war, surely others were simply caught up in it. As I looked at the photgraphs I could not help but to think about the fate of some of the lovely young women at wars end and wonder how many of them and their loved ones survived. General William T. Sherman said "War is Hell" and most if not all of these people were facing that hell right around the corner. I would like to see similar volumes published on the other nations caught up in World War Two.

Excellent new volume by Walter Spielberger

The late German author Walter Spielberger's series of technical works on German military vehicles are not new. Most of the titles date back some years and earlier volumes were not as "good" as later ones. Spielberger's old Panzer IV book was one that is not so good. Fortunately, this all new "book 2" makes up for the shortcomings of the prior tome. Typical of Spielberger's works, this one is a technical and developmental history, although the last part of the book deals with operational use of the Panzer IV. A wide variety of drawings are included, many by noted draftman Hillary Doyle, along with reproductions of original German plans, etc. Photo quality is good also, with most of them being presented in a large, clear, format. There are some common photos reproduced here, but they are used to illustrate a specific vehicle or detail and the captions point out the pertinent details. Some of the translated text is a bit uneven almost as if it were done by more than one person. For example (and on one page!) the Panzer IV's rear wheel is described as a "leading wheel" in one photo caption and then as the "idler wheel" which would be the common English term, in another caption. Unfortunately on that same page also the captions for several photos are all swapped around, making for some additional confusion. Sadly some proof reading errors like this are common in Schiffer's translated reprints. Not a huge issue but sometimes frustrating. The first portion of the book covers the development of the Grosstractor and NbFz tanks, which lead to the Panzer IV itself. The bulk of the book then covers the design, development, improvements to, and usage of the Panzer IV throught the War. Unlike the previous volume which this supplements, it does not cover Panzer IV based vehicles like the Brummbaer, Wirbelwind, etc. but rather focuses exclusively on the gun tank variants.

This book appears, at first glance, to be somewhat scarce and often is listed at an excessive sale price. However, it is available (at least as of November 2011) from the publisher and also Barnes and Noble for the normal list price. I bought my copy via an Amazon sub-seller by being patient enough for a new copy to appear at the proper price. Hardbound photo books are not cheap but this one is worth the money if you are intersted in the Panzer IV.

ADDENDUM: It seems that in the Schiffer/English language version of the book, the 1/35 scale line drawings are printed in various "fit the page" sizes although they may still be marked 1/35. On a four view, the side image may be 1/35 but the top view could be 1/30 and the front and back views 1/40.

An excellent reference, but not a readable history

No other book on this tank has this kind of detail or primary source citation that this one does. It strictly deals with the Panzer IV tank as a main battle tank and doesn't talk about the variants that weren't intended for the battle tank purpose. It has great information on the proposals for major upgrades of the tank (sloped armor, Panther 75mm gun, even a fluid-final drive model which apparently still exists in the USA.)

Like a number of books that I've seen from German authors, the book is organized more like an outline than a narrative. This book is the most extreme example that I've personally owned. It reads like a large series of excerpts from primary source documents organized in an outline-like format (including headers) broken down by model.

This is not necessarily a negative. My own preference was for a book that delved into the technical and development aspects of the Panzer IV. There are no "battlefield stories" and few anecdotal experiences related.

The level of documentation and primary source citation is unparalleled in any other work dealing with the Panzer IV. There's not as much reasoning given behind the decisions that the primary source documents illustrate. You know that certain changes were made, and even a basic reason for it, but not always the background that prompted the change to the vehicle.

There are also what appear to be some translations that aren't clear. For example, the book frequently refers to "bandages" when talking about the chassis. This term wasn't defined. I believe what the term means in English are "tires."

For all of this, there is nothing close to this book in describing the technical features and changes that this tank underwent during its evolution. More famous tanks like the Tiger, Panther, and Sherman have some books with these details, but not the Panzer IV. Just don't expect a highly readable beginning-to-end history like Hunnicutt's "Sherman" book, which has similar detail but more background and prose behind it (but is also a much larger and massive volume.)

Lots of Recent Photos of Aircraft Boneyards

This book was originally published in German, and later translated into English. Aside from minor editorial errors, e.g., the chapter entitled "Tuscon", the translation worked okay.

The book was copyrighted in 2010, and in fact many of the photos and statistics are "recent", meaning as recent as 2004 or 2008, a fact that I liked. I've seen some other boneyard books with dated materials and photos.

The book is about 160 pages in length, featuring dozens (or hundreds) of full color photos. The author has good coverage of modern boneyards such as Pinal Airpark, Mojave, AMARG and others. He also has tips on how to visit each boneyard.

The book was a nice addition to my military aircraft collection.

About the Author
Dr. William Wolf has written fourteen books and numerous articles on World War II aviation combat and is an avid collector and historian, having over 22,000 World War II books and magazines, three miles of microfilm, and thousands of photos in his library, along with numerous pieces of World War II aviation memorabilia and aces' autographs.

Volume Two of Mammoth 5th Air Force History!

And here we have Volume Two of THE FIFTH FIGHTER COMMAND IN WORLD WAR II, William Wolf's history of that war-winning USAAF command. This second volume covers from THE END IN NEW GUINEA, THE PHILIPPINES TO V-J DAY in some 450+ pages illustrated with hundreds of photographs and illustrations.

Inspired by Roger Freeman's 'Mighty Eighth' books, Wolf spent years researching 5th FC, compiling and reading endless official reports and documents, interviewing 5th FC vets and amassing a huge collection of photographs. The result is this three-volume history published by Schifler Publishing.

Volume Two continues Wolf's thorough coverage of 5th FC ops, detailing every significant mission, command change, occurence, etc. in the last 23 months of the Pacific War. The deeds of famed airmen like Lynch, Johnson, Bong, Kearby, McGuire, Shomo and others are recounted along with those less well-known pilots. Those deeds are set against a backdrop that details the changing strategic situation in the Pacfic, tactical developments in-theater, developments of bases, introduction of new aircraft, etc. At times, the level of detail is almost overwhelming. It's best to savor Wolf's book a chapter at a time.

Visually, the book is a treasure trove for 5th FC fans with hundreds of pix, maps and illustrations of pilots, aircraft, ground crews, Japanese a/c, gun-camera images, bases and so on. Many of the shots have never been seen before. There's also seven pages of color views of 5th FC and Japanese aircraft.

As with Volume One however, the claims made by 5th FC pilots generally haven't been compared to actual Japanese losses in the book. Perhaps Wolf didn't have that info when he was writing these books or perhaps he didn't want to spend another billion years(!?!) researching the topic.

In any case, THE FIFTH FIGHTER COMMAND will serve as THE definitive history of - and a great tribute to - that war-winning command. Highly recommended.

This book is an excellent source of understanding of what the World War 2 fighter pilot had to deal with in combat. Lots of very good detail and lots of pictures to make the story line more meaningful.
