Small book for touring Louisville landmarks

This book is a small, thin paperback intended to present cultural tourists with background information about Louisville's enormous stock of 19th-century architecture.

It is arranged into six short tours, each featuring about five landmark structures.

This book is nothing approaching an architectural survey of the city, but can be useful for finding sections of Louisville that will lead a curious traveler into self discovery.

There are about 50 color photographs of important buildings in Louisville, but few are of high artistic quality. They are mostly functional.

Recommended for casual browsing and cultural tourism.

Dr. William Wolf has written fourteen books and numerous articles on World War II aviation combat and is an avid collector and historian, having over 22,000 World War II books and magazines, three miles of microfilm, and thousands of photos in his library, along with numerous pieces of World War II aviation memorabilia and aces' autographs.

Mammoth History of a Fifth Air Force Unit!

Of all the American air forces that saw combat in World War II, George Kenney's Fifth Air Force arguably had more impact on Allied victory than any other Air Force in any other theater. The cutting edge of 5th Air Force was the Fifth Fighter Command. In four short years, 5th FC went from a demoralized, bedraggled hodge-podge of units and aircraft trying to stem the ever-victorious Japanese to a top-notch, hard-hitting force that decimated Japanese airpower. William Wolf describes the creation, development and initial combat ops of the 5th FC in this highly-detailed, heavily-illustrated volume from Schiffer Publishing, the first of three volumes!

PEARL HARBOR TO THE REDUCTION OF RABAUL is a heavyweight, topping out at 448 pages and boasting around 700 photographs, diagrams, color profiles and maps. Wolf gets high marks for his research. His narrative isn't just a series of 'yank-and-bank' combat reports. Wolf does present such material but frames it against the backdrop of Allied military strategy in World War II, a 'Europe First' strategy that ensured 5th AF would be chronically short of aircraft and crews. He also details the conflict between Allied commanders in the Pacific over the direction the Allied advance should take and also provides insightful biographies of Allied commanders. And he includes material on the all-important development of Allied air bases that helped 5th FC and other units take the war to the Japanese.

The nucleus of Fifth Fighter Command was supplied by survivors of the fight for the Philippines, Java and the Dutch East Indies supplemented by stateside units/personnel hurriedly shipped to Australia. Initially equipped with P-39s, P-400s and P-40s, units like the 8th, 35th and 49th Fighter Groups fought for time. In September 1942, Major General George Kenney assumed command of the now-redesignated Fifth Air Force and he began the process of building 5th AF into a war-winning military force. Fifth Fighter Command, under Colonel Paul Wurtsmith, was soon playing a vital role in the Allied counter-offensive against the Japanese. New fighters such as the P-38 and P-47 and improved models of the P-39 and P-40 along with fresh aircrews including a young Wisconsin flier named Richard Bong began reclaiming the skies over Australia, Papua and New Guinea, all of which is related in Volume One of THE FIFTH FIGHTER COMMAND IN WORLD WAR II.

Considering this is a Schiffer book, I was pleasantly surprised by the small number of typos, missing words and miscaptioned photographs in the book. Photo quality ranges from poor to good; most pix fall in the fair to good category.

If there is a weakness in the book, it is that Wolf apparently wasn't able to obtain information on the actual losses the Japanese suffered in many of the air battles described in Volume One. In the book, most of the claims made by 5th FC and 5th BC crews for downed aircraft, sunken ships, etc. are given at face value but, in point of fact, overclaiming by both sides was common. PEARL HARBOR TO THE REDUCTION OF RABAUL would have been an even more valuable book if Wolf had been able to supply actual Japanese losses.

In his preface, Wolf claims THE FIFTH FIGHTER COMMAND IN WORLD WAR II is "the first comprehensive and definitive account" on the subject. I agree; I can't imagine anyone investing similar time and effort in such a project. And, while I might wish all the photographs had been PhotoShopped and that full and complete records of all Japanese losses had been provided, the fact remains that this project is an outstanding accomplishment and a long-overdue tribute to some notable American fighting men. In closing, I might mention that, because of the detailed text and the fact that Wolf recounts hundreds of air battles, PEARL HARBOR TO THE REDUCTION OF RABAUL is best savored a chapter at a time. Highly recommended.

Mighty Book Of The 5th

This is a great book on the 5th Fighter Command, and I enjoyed the detail and format so much.
You really can't beat the diary type format to get you through a war with ease.
I also liked the Profiles included, much improved on the more usual Schiffer efforts.
Mr. Wolf is to be much praised for this enormous work, and it should be on the shelf of everyone interested in the Pacific air war..
Volume 11 ordered, and awaiting volume 111 with anticipation........

Great Reference that includes all American Mid-Century Modern Glass Companies!

Just got my copy, I like the organization of the book by company - very handy and easy to use reference, I also like the Section on Designers of the era. Designers should be given much credit for these great innovative pieces. Great pictures and ads from the era! I find the pricing guide of "good, better, best" to be very helpful in searching for treasures. Thumbs up!

Great book to understand the broad perspective of glass in America

I am not sure where the glaring negative review comes from. I guess we could all find something to quibble about with any book that attempts to reconstruct history based on limited or conflicting data. I think our history books are rife with such conflicts, with those who are certain with one version of a "fact" and with others holding a completely different version. In the end, getting the history out there and sparking debate is good. Vicious attacks because one person’s version doesn't match with someone else’s seem to serve little purpose to understand our past. For goodness sake, look at how many versions there are of the Lincoln and Kennedy assassinations, and those certainly have granted far more scrutiny than glassware.

Understanding the books mission and scope is to see that it is not a book about a specific company. Clearly if the reader wanted to understand a company in depth (such as Blenko), there are countless books out there including those published by Damon C. It seems to me that Mr. Six was attempting to put companies in context with others that were producing glass at the same time, to discern the differences and to understand the geography and towns that made the glass and supported the industry. For me, as a lover of history and in particular our nation’s industrial history, the book was very informative. In the end, I am not so sure whether a specific piece of glass has the letter “M” or “L” attached to its catalog number is material to what the book is about.

I found the book invaluable for understanding the companies, the glassware they made and some of the "human" component of those companies. As it is not book about a specific company but rather a look at the companies and the glassware they made that shaped a very important industry in our nation. I found it to be fascinating, informative and the photos were exceptional to help understand and identify pieces and to see how the glass was marketed.

A great book, especially when you consider its scope - to understand the diversity, complexity and vastness of the mid-century glass industry - is a home run!

Well worth the money.

I am overwhelmed. I have studied WW2 camo for forty years. Never realized the SS had this many pattern variations. I don't think they even realized it, either. Very well photographed, printed on high quality paper. Some real "eye-candy" here for WW2 buffs. Happy I bought this.

Other books have more vivid photos

I bought this book as a souvenir after seeing The Neustadt Collection of Tiffany Glass. This book was a good value for the price. However, it is worth noting that the white background of the photos did not enhance the beauty of the lamps as well as a darker background would have. One book on the subject with much more vivid photos is The Lamps of Louis Comfort Tiffany. If I wanted to spend more, I would have bought that book instead.

Wonderful movie inspired art posters

[[VIDEOID:mo25WCLTONDLKNJ]]Movie posters nowadays seems to be all about realism, photography and special effects. A book like Alternative Movie Posters is a breath of fresh air with the art and graphic design inspired posters.

The posters featured are not official, hence the book title. They are created for film fests, theatres, art galleries, periodicals and even specifically for this book.

More than 100 poster designers featured, and each has around 1 to 2 pieces of artworks featured. Most are drawn and there's an amazing variety of illustrative art and style. Quality of art is top notch. The selection is also very well done with a nice mixture of cult movies and hollywood blockbusters.

The highlight of the book is the concept that goes behind the creation of these posters. Some are straightforward, but there are also many that are visually smart and will make you do a double-take.

It's really quite fascinating to see all the artists and with their alternative designs. Additionally, there are also commentary from the artists on their designs, influence, favourite films, preferred medium and other info.

The book's a 208-page hardcover. Paper is thick and low gloss. The artworks are wonderfully reproduced.

The big (and best) book of alternative movie posters.

This surely has to be the definitive book on Alternative Movie posters. With 208 in color and large on the page I doubt if anyone will publish anything better. The author really has done a huge amount of research to pull all this detail together and nicely. With a smart, fresh visual perspective, alternative movie posters celebrate classics like Star Wars, Raging Bull, A Clockwork Orange, and The Shining as well as cult favorites: The Big Lebowski, Blade Runner, and Pink Flamingos.

"Alternative Movie Posters: Film Art from the Underground" presents a selection of artists such as: Tim Doyle, Rocco Malatesta, Jesse Philips, Joshua Gilbert, just to name a few.

As I've said already, I doubt there will be a better, more comprehensive book on Alternative Movie posters than this one.

some movie posters have been fantastic in the past few years but others are barely ...

Genre fans of every stripe often lament the lackluster posters that have dominated the movie marketing world for a couple of decades now. True, some movie posters have been fantastic in the past few years but others are barely worth looking at (wtf was up with the Jurassic World poster?). Today, most folks jump straight to youtube and check out a trailer for a film rather than soak in the poster for said flick. But why would you want to? Most posters are generic and chiefly feature the A-list celebrity on it making a face or something with the name of the movie slapped on the bottom/top of the image.

You don’t have to go to a video store and pick up a movie based on the cover art anymore. Now, you can find tons of reviews and watch the preview before you settle in for the night. Sure we got burned in the past but it was fun looking at all those fascinating vhs covers and movie posters. I’m not alone in this.

Author/artist Matthew Chojnacki has scoured the world over to collect his very favorite unofficial movie posters made by artists. Some of them were commissioned for special screenings and some were commissioned for the book and a whole heap of them were made just for fun. Alternative Movie Posters: Film Art from the Underground is a celebration of pop art that movie fans can get behind. The book presents the posters in full color and nearly the size of the page itself. Each artist is given credit along with contact information and a short interview below the image. Many different styles are represented here from classic painted posters reminiscent of the 80’s, to minimalist modern posters, to the highly stylized, and everything in between. No doubt there are posters here that you will love and ones that you will hate, we can’t all agree when it comes to art. Every page is very different from the last with a bevy of unique visual styles. You will find new artists to follow and get to see art from folks you’re probably already aware of.

Alternative Movie Posters if a fun coffee table book that you can flip through at your leisure and enjoy. Who knows? Maybe you’ll find your new favorite artist within these pages and buy up all their stuff, or maybe you’ll dig into a film because of the rad poster someone did for it. The book is a feast for the eyes. This one is for those of us who love to gaze at posters long and hard to withdraw all their secrets. There’s a second volume coming out soon too and I’ll be checking that one out too. I can’t wait to see what’s inside.

Tarot Wisdom from a new perspective

Christopher Butler as taken "coming out" to a new level. His Son Tarot celebrates not only an open gay life but also the inner strength that comes from embracing our true selves wholeheartedly. While his deck relies on images that show gay men exclusively, the tarot insight he portrays is definitely inclusive. Women, gay and straight, as well as straight men are invited to learn about the masculine and feminine aspects of tarot wisdom by viewing it as it is experienced and expressed by gay men.

The images on the cards are powerful. Butler is an accomplished artist. His commentary on each of the cards is personal, enlightened, and straightforward (pun intended). He discovered the tarot in a James Bond movie. In the thirty years since then, his personal journey through the cards has culminated in a new, creative, and highly-informed expression of tarot truths. I took an interest in this deck because it was created by a gay man, using images of gay men. I found it to be an informative and powerful tool for exploring the universal messages of tarot.

Such a Deeply Soulful, Sensuous and Beautiful Tarot by a truly Gifted Artist!!!

I am becoming a big Chris Butler Fan!!!

This deck has so much soul to it, and as a gay man, i find it so much more meaningful and relatable than most standard decks. Butler is an amazingly talented artist, and the beauty of this deck is only matched by his "Quantum Tarot."

The cards are almost phantasmal in their crystalline beauty, as if the composition on each were etched in smoke or light. And while clearly a modern deck, drawing at times from modern imagery, the cards give the sense of something very timeless, and trans-dimensional.

Some cards employ a layering effect, making visual punning, or "kenning" as some call it, a striking feature in this deck. See, for example, the King of Pantacles.

Furthermore, the book which accompanies the deck is beautifully written. By relating the cards to the experience of coming out, Butler offers some very interesting insights and nuances into the emotive powers and heartfelt experiences represented by these cards.

Christopher Butler has done a nice job with this Tarot Deck. The illustrations are superb and the cards really do speak to you. I've added this deck to my collection because of Gay friends that I have but it's also a good deck to have if your a straight male or female. I would recommend this deck to anyone looking to find a deeper meaning to their life.
