Suzanne Ramljak, a writer, art historian, and curator, is editor of Metalsmith magazine and curator of exhibitions at the American Federation of Arts. She was formerly editor of Sculpture and of Glass Quarterly magazines. Ramljak is the author of Crafting a Legacy: Contemporary American Crafts in the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Elie Nadelman: Classical Folk, and has contributed to numerous other publications, including One of a Kind: American Art Jewelry Today. She has lectured widely on contemporary art and served as guest curator for several exhibitions, among them Different Tempers: Jewelry and Blacksmithing; Body Language: Contemporary Art Jewelry; and this book s companion exhibition, Protective Ornament: Contemporary Amulets to Armor.

Beautiful and terrifying

This fascinating book addresses the most basic human impulse: to protect and defend the self against threats and fears, real and imagined. The armor and amulets of the subtitle refer to objects, both beautiful and terrifying, made by contemporary jewelry artisans, whose work is rarely seen by the general public, and who are responding to the Age of Terror, an age in which we now all live. There’s a necklace made of handgun triggers, a cuff made of porcupine quills, and no less than five different designs for contemporary chastity belts that can be read as a response to the widespread tyranny of rape in the world. In the section on body armor, the offerings range from conceptual helmets to politicized fashion items, e.g. a jacket made of U.S. military dog tags. A chapter devoted to “aggressive wearables” features several sets of surreal brass knuckles—fashioned variously from crystals, wedding rings, and casts of human teeth—along with predator rings brandishing animal claws, blades and daggers. This is a provocative book that gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “statement jewelry,” here the statement being one of concern rather than opulence, one of activism rather than complacency.

"Metal Masterpieces"

I love it not only because my friend's work is on the cover, and her fantastic works of art are in the book, as well, but the whole book is filled with stunning metal works. From chastity belts to metal knuckles and talons, it is filled with very creative and imaginative choices, wonderful and sensuous to look at! I am so inspired, it makes me want to take workshops in metal. A very exciting and beautiful book. Bravo to Suzanne Ramljak, who obviously has exquisite taste! And congratulations to the talented artists who made it into this book, no small feat!

Such a beautiful and historically fascinating book. Some of the photos brought me back to visits that I had to museums around the world, where such armor and amulets were on display. The display of protective armor at the Tower Of London comes easily to mind. Fabulous imagery and insightful commentary of the significance of these historic pieces. A well-researched and finely presented book, sure to delight history buffs and metal-smiths everywhere.

Do ghosts exist at Alcatraz prison?

The prison at Alcatraz Island has to be one of the spookiest places in the United States. The echoes of desperation and misery permeate its walls, the ghosts of which it is impossible to ignore.

Its storied history begins with the Native Americans who avoided the island, believing it was the "dwelling [place] of evil spirits." Its uses by the United States government include a Civil War military prison in the 1800s and a federal penitentiary beginning in 1934. It is commonly known for its torturous treatment of its prisoners, punishment that included "The Hole," isolation cells that were known to have driven more than one man mad, "dungeon cells" where prisoners were shackled to the walls, and "the silent treatment," during which prisoners were not allowed to communicate at all. Most of these were eventually abandoned after being declared "cruel and unusual punishment," but their use would have been conducive to creating an environment that would not easily have been forgotten by those who were incarcerated here.

Could it be possible that some of these sad and desolate souls remained behind after death? In "Ghosts of Alcatraz," author Kathryn Vercillo investigates that question.

I had great hopes for this book when I was presented early on with a detailed timeline of Alcatraz Island's history. It is obvious that Ms. Vercillo dedicated a lot of time to researching the information she presents here (extensive bibliography included), and she gives us a solid understanding of the events that took place here over time. But what we get as a result is a compilation of books that have already been written, rather than having the author draw any new conclusions of her own. She has made the trip to Alcatraz Prison, and makes statements such as "When you hear ... the low strum of Al Capone's guitar, or sense the unseemly chill emanating from the cell of Robert `Birdman' Stroud ...." Is the author speaking of her own experiences, or is this pure speculation drawn from other accounts? It is hard to tell. Based on the rest of the book, I vote for the latter.

Ms. Vercillo speaks mainly in generalizations, such as "It is said that ....," and "Many believe that .... " She does an excellent job of setting the mood and bringing to life the ominous surroundings of a trip to the island. But I kept expecting to get to the meat and potatoes, and they just never came. Ultimately, the book just doesn't deliver anything new. The author does an exceptional job in presenting us with known history and rumored hauntings, but has no ghostly experiences of her own to document, nor has she interviewed any witnesses. In fairness, I must mention that Adam Vogt's photography is very successful in delivering many eerie pictures from both inside and outside the prison, but again, nothing new. No new orbs captured on film or the like.

Also, there is a glossary at the end of the book of paranormal terms with which to familiarize yourself before your trip to Alcatraz, none of which were encountered here. There is also much time devoted to another section at the end detailing equipment used in paranormal investigations, again, none of which were used here. This equipment section is published by the Chester County Paranormal Research Society in Pennsylvania, who had absolutely nothing to do with this book. That confuses me a bit. Is this just information for information's sake? It's interesting, but was it appropriate to include it here? Is the author preparing us to take part in a professional ghost hunt? Maybe. I'm not sure.

To borrow a term from the author, "it is often said" that spirits, rather than passing on to where they belong, remain behind to deal with unfinished business, trapped and unable to move forward and away from the location of their suffering, or so the thinking goes, creating what the living call "ghosts." The "worst of the worst" were incarcerated here, such as George "Machine Gun" Kelly, Abie "Butcher" Maldowitz, and Al Capone. Did they deserve such extreme punishment, punishment that prisoners called "hell on earth?" That is a question you must answer for yourself. Either way, the suffering finally ended when the penitentiary closed its doors in 1963. Today, happy, interested tourists explore Alcatraz with a sense of curiosity and anticipation that belies its most recent incarnation as the most notorious prison in the United States. Its history must be approached with respect.

So, could there be ghosts at Alcatraz? My guess would be yes, but the jury's still out.

Garage-Door Evangelism was written with great passion and zeal to challenge Christian leaders to rethink the way we "do church." It was written with the understanding that there are some churches in America who have "opened their garage doors" very wide. But it was also written with the realization that the majority of churches are struggling to be effective change agents in a nation that has changed greatly over the past two decades. Most of all, this book was written to encourage Christian leaders who want to go through some transitions in "church" with real purpose and caution.

Many leaders are not saying "no" to church change, they are asking "How?" They seem to have a tenacious desire to make a difference. But the paradigm has shifted so quickly that it is difficult for them to maintain unity in the church and bring meaningful change at the same time.

We're invited into the house, and of course, it's just as we thought--perfect! The furnishings, the surroundings, the carpets, the walls, the trim--everything is perfect! When our tour is finished, we walk away from the house, shaking our heads in awe. The stark reality and the perplexity of hopelessness fill our hearts--"I'll never have a house like that!" We almost wish we hadn't seen it. We were content before touring the dream house.

This picture of perfection has stimulated many emotions. The thrill of seeing what perfection can be leaves us with a nagging disgust that we will never be able to experience it. We feel the hope that maybe it really is possible, but then we experience the reality that we could never attain it.

Thousands and thousands drive by our houses of worship and see the image that we have portrayed. Then they ask the question--"I wonder what it's like on the inside?" You see, the "unchurched" want to touch, taste, feel, and experience the inside--the inside of this beautiful picture we've created for all the world to examine. But they're unsure. They're aware of our statements and slogans. They've watched us over the months, maybe years, and they're hoping that inside there really is a God who loves them. However, the caverns in their hearts tell them that this too is simply a big, beautiful house that would be impossible to attain. Peace? Purpose? Destiny? All of these concepts are seemingly impossible because they've only seen the outside of the house. They're weary of disappointment, and they're afraid they would not meet the criteria to attain the dream we talk about. They're afraid, unsure, and simply weary of the images we call beautiful.

The problem exists because they see and hear our claims and then they meet us personally. There seems to be a difference between what we profess and who we really are. We're real people; broken, divorced, wounded, angry, and jealous. We're people who also get cancer and die. We're people who live on coffee, are overweight, and take Prozac or even use Rogaine! Sometimes we even file for bankruptcy or commit suicide. How can it be? Do our claims really match our lives?

I've been in the ministry now for twenty-one years. I've reached the point of disgust with many easy-answer Christians who want to give the image of complete utopia in every aspect of their lives. I've watched the unchurched examine our statements against our lives and walk away convinced that it is just another scam! In this book, I'm proposing very radical, risky concept--being real and opening the garage door, rather than the image-driven front door, to the unchurched. I invite you to examine your own ministry with me as you ask yourself this question--is our garage door open?

Fabulous book with fresh insights

Dary Northrup has written an excellent book that will be valuable for anyone who desires to help their church become a church that connects well with unchurched people. Since 85% of churches in America are plateaued or in decline (according to Barna) the need for this book is huge! Easy to understand, written in an enjoyable style, yet full of potent insights, this is a "must-read" for church leaders serious about meaningful ministry in this new millenium.

This book compares the church to a home garage. Just as people get a feel for the home owners, the visitors to a church get a feel for the heart of the individual church.

Dennis June's Fred Harvey Jewelry 1900 - 1955 is not only a valuable resource for the collector, it is full of fascinating information that will help all of us understand the Fred Harvey era of souvenir Indian-inspired jewelry. I was amazed at some of the things I read. The book is interesting and well-researched. It has an extensive bibliography and helpful glossary. June utilizes several private collections and hundreds of specimens photographed for the book. It is available with lots of full color photos.

Like many others, I cast aside dozens of early century souvenir bracelets in my day. Despite that, a seed of curiosity was set by our family friends. Natch.
We shall call them the Chambers: it was they who asked our opinion of a silver bracelet we had never before seen. It was lightweight but had a magnificent Number Eight spiderweb turquoise stone. They showed us the eBay link from which it originated. It was difficult coughing up the words to tell them their "find" was souvenir, despite the stellar turquoise gemstone and otherwise claims of eBay's seller.
This incident continues in the first two paragraphs of my book Preface. And my self-imposed ten-year odyssey began that very day; a seed of curiosity that blossomed into a fully inflamed passion, "Fred Harvey Jewelry," a term I'd never heard before eBay. So eBay became the arrow point of my curiosity, beginning with that very link to the Chambers' auction win.
"What?," I wondered, "is Fred Harvey Jewelry?"
Having been in the "Indian business" for nearly a half century, souvenir jewelry once comprised a steady revenue source for our own family Indian stores. We called them souvenir bracelets, so as to define them for buyers. When a youngster, we called them "Railroad bracelets" because they seemed to come from the train culture. But eBay called them "Fred Harvey bracelets." I was, indeed, curious . . .
Yes, I admit a hands on education with the souvenir jewelry of the early fifties and later. We sold a ton of it. In many months, it was first among many curios which mostly paid the bills. We later drifted into an Indian Gallery mode, abandoning machined goods, including the best selling souvenir Indian jewelry.
The Chambers' bracelet ignited a youthful flame in my soul. My early curiosities (also related in the book) were rekindled when a memorable and specific "Pretty Girl" bracelet reappeared fifty years after the first time I'd seen it. That beautiful machined bracelet, along with others in an Oregon antique mall, inflamed a fervor that has shaped our lives to this day.
Studies have shown that souvenir silver Indian jewelry has seeped into a majority of the vintage Indian jewelry collections. That they would be confused with authentic silver Indian bracelets is no surprise. What IS surprising, is that otherwise well educated collectors found the same value in Fred Harvey bracelets as they did authentic handmade ones.
As patterns arose among the many collections studied, the book started weaving its own tale. The fifty-five year study-span revealed many subways that had to be reconnected through the Fred Harvey platform. More questions appeared than were answered. Many theories were debunked, some one hundred eighty degrees. Others were confirmed. The words of over fifty leading authors helped assemble details and fill gaps. But the bracelets told the story. And I am happy Schiffer Publishing shared my enthusiasm for my study of Fred Harvey Jewelry by publishing this wonderful volume. And my photos. Thank you. Enjoy!

The success of American Indian silversmiths follows a pathway blazed by the silver jewelry makers who came before - those who worked raw silver, channeled it, and made it profitable. The Fred Harvey Company organized production and ran retail shops for tourists along Santa Fe Railway routes, helping to build popular jewelry styles upon which today's Southwestern jewelry traditions survive.

This book focuses on vintage souvenir bracelets from private collections that were studied and photographed, and there parallels with made originals. Image of early Southwest jewelry are supplemented by Harvey Company Photostint postcards, to provide a fresh vantage that clarifies the complex styles of Indian jewelry and their champion, the Fred Harvey Company.

Beautiful Book

This book is beautiful and scholarly, but I'm a little disappointed. The title and description as Fred Harvey "Jewelry" is a little misleading. There are no examples of rings, pins, necklaces, earrings. The study was exclusively on bracelets & their designs as an example for all Fred Harvey jewelry. It will be helpful, but from the title, as a pre-ordered book, as a book about Fred Harvery "Jewelry", I was expecting a more all-encompassing review.

Good Picture Book but Generic history that has been presented elsewhere, lacking technical explanation of jewelry construction

Since I collect and wear this jewelry I'm glad I bought this book, if only for the excellent photography. The actual history presented is pretty generic and when the author can't provide information he states it is an area for further study. When he discusses the actual manufacturing techniques he doesn't provide a clear explanation of the terms he is using to describe the elements of the jewelry. A picture or hand drawing identifying the components and actually pointing them out would have been helpful. One annoying thing was he would have a picture of 2 bracelets and then ask if you could tell which one was hand made and which one was only partially hand made or machine made, but he wouldn't actually tell you which one was hand made or what the identifying features were. The author obviously loves collecting this jewelry and that comes thru. All in all, knowing what I know now after reading this book I would still probably buy it for the pictorial reference.

Really Superior

I have seen a lot of urban exploration / urban archeology images and books over the years. But this is, hands down, one of the best. Using full page spreads of meticulously shot and processed images, these other-worldly images are both art and emotion. A glimpse of past that is very telling about the current world in which we live.

As a photographer, I have to admit I was wowed by every single shot. There is technique - most photographers can pick up a camera and shoot an image. But the angles, compositions, and how he shot the buildings took technique into art. I really have to commend the artistic eye - using the right lens, right lighting, and right choices from start to finish to create stirring, imaginative, and ultimately very emotive imagery.

The processing of the images is a very tasteful HD - no over-the-top saturated colors or unnatural highlights/shadows. Instead, the HD is used to bring out all the details in very high contrast and difficult lighting situations. As such, details are left a bit in the shadows or brights but not completely lost as they would have been if shot using available lighting.

Pictures are captioned so viewers know exactly what they are seeing. As well, there are personal observations about several of the locations that are very informative and add to the story of the abandoned buildings.

At just over 200 pages, this book is a feast for the eyes but also for the heart. Broken down into type of building (e.g., theater, hospital, school, etc.) it also allows for an examination of different types of forgotten architecture across the American landscape.

In all, highest recommendations. This is an exquisite book worthy of repeat viewing and very well presented.

What a fantastic collection....

If you're looking for an exceptional coffee table book full of photographs that are both beautiful and chilling, you need not look any further. Holubow's collection of images of our version of ancient ruins is an absolute gem among the throngs of cheap and derivative junk one usually encounters these days. The entire book will mesmerize, delight, and amaze even the most casual viewer. "Abandoned" is perfectly raw and utterly elegant.
A brilliant addition to any household. A must buy.

Stanley B. Burns, MD, a New York City ophthalmologist and clinical professor of medicine and psychiatry, NYU, is an internationally distinguished author, curator, historian, collector, and archivist. In 1977, he founded The Burns Archive with his collection of over 1 million vintage photographs. Elizabeth A. Burns is the creative and operations director of The Burns Archive and Press. She has curated numerous exhibitions and created several books, including Sleeping Beauty II and The Burns Archive Medical Specialty Series.

Historical, riveting and fascinating

'Stiffs, Skulls & Skeletons: Medical Photography and Symbolism' by Stanley Burns MD may not be for everyone with pictures of the dead. My review copy was only 51 pages long, but I was fascinated by the text and especially the photos.

Stanley Burns has been collecting these type of photos for a few decades now and his collection has been featured in museum exhibits and other books he has written. The subjects by our modern sensibility seems morbid and gruesome, but try to understand the nature of the times. Historical paintings showed physicians posing with skulls. Is it any wonder that early photos would have the same subject? There was a time when photos were taken of the deceased for part of the family's grieving process. In an age when doctors were trying to learn new things about human ailments, documenting the oddities in photography was a good way to convey knowledge.

How we view death in our age is different than it was 100 years ago. Posing for photos with dead relatives may seem strange by our standards, but this was quite normal, and is even being revisited as a way to help with the grieving process. The text is accessible but delves into the subject, and some of the pictures are even quite artistic. I really enjoyed this book but I do admit that it might not be for everyone.

Vintage medical photography in all its (shocking) glory.

After looking at these photos from the collection of Dr. Burns, I wonder if the physicians of the 19th century really had any respect for the patients. This book is interesting, without a doubt, because you get to see the medical schools of old, along with the type of instruction that was commonplace. According to the preface, medicine in the UK had changed in the nineteenth century; gone were the quack barber surgeons, now replaced by years of study at universities. Dissection was no longer done in secret with payments to grave robbers, but in teaching wards, where the students received a lot of training. However, according to these photos, the bodies themselves were often reduced to a freak show.

One of the photos in this book shows a dissected head, with part of the cranium removed, sitting on a plate. The eyes are open and so is the stubbly mouth, as if the deceased is in a stupor. It probably looks less ghastly in an old black and white photo than it would as a clear color digital one, because black and white photos can’t show the blood. Nowadays this is the kind of thing you’d see on a website devoted to “rotten.” Half the photos in this book show the medical students clowning around with the corpses, though how they got the expensive (and large and cumbersome) cameras into the wards I do not know. It would be easier nowadays thanks to iPhone cameras and their capacity to hold a million photos, but the student who takes the photo would probably be expelled.

Plate 1.29, however, has a more scholarly angle to the anatomy photo. It shows three men sitting around a skull, perched on an open book, as they study it. The skull and book bring to mind the old “memento mori” theme in classical painting, where the skull symbolizes the passage of time. As for the photos of the operating theaters, everything is very orderly and respectful, with none of the shenanigans from where the professors weren’t around.

Further chapters have photos from case studies, and before-and-after photos of patients after operations. There are photos of skulls eaten away by syphilis, WWI veterans recovering from jaw surgery, and bullets lodged in bones. The surgeons probably had plenty of opportunity to experiment with all the gruesome injuries that the veterans had, the kind that you can’t do on a cadaver whose bones don’t grow.

Medicine has always been politically controversial, not just because of quality and cost, but the ethics towards the patient. A recent book, Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, portrays how a lack of trust grew among African Americans towards physicians, given how they were often used for unethical experimentation. Then you have last year’s book A Finger In Lincolns Brain, which shows how low the quality of American medicine was. But after reading this book, it’s clear that even in the more primitive days, the patients’ survival rate hinged on how seriously the physician took his job.

What a beautiful, terrible book

What a beautiful, terrible book. Featuring medical photography from The Burns Archive, this gem would fit well into any horror fan's collection. The people who took these photos probably didn't fancy themselves artists, but long after the medical relevance of an image is gone, the artistry remains.

The cover itself shows one of the volume's most memorable images, a medical student posing as if the "stiffs" were the ones dissecting him in some sort of macabre revenge. Apparently this was a popular way to pose, as the book features more than one photo using this concept.

As expected, it features quite a bit of post-mortem photography, including some of the posed Memorial Photograph kind, so if you're squeamish about that this really isn't for you.

I thoroughly suggest you check out this absolutely fascinating collection, and perhaps purchase it as a coffee-table book to freak out any of your guests.
