Cauldon for Collectors

Quite simply the best reference work currently available on the output of Cauldon Ltd. and its predecessors and sucessors for over a century including helpful pricing guides. Because Cauldon's tableware patterns alone ran to several tens of thousands, this book could not be expected to address individually all of the company's products, but it does cover a broad enough sampling to make it the definitive work on its subject matter. Kudos to Robert Cluett for giving us this book.

This is the finest book available on Cauldon, bar none. The pricing guides are helpful, the background information facinating, and although the photographs are sometimes a little out of focus, each page features multiple images of representative wares.

The best book - make that the ONLY book, on the Detailed history of Brown-Westhead Moore & Co.. Robert Cluett has done a masterful job of research into Staffordshire. Many other books on British pottery and porcelain exist, but have only minor information on B-W M & Co. As we have collected and studied British ceramics for 25+ years, and have quite an extensive reference library of our own - we must say that for those of you who share our interests, this book with its terrific photos and facts, is a "Must Have."

The Visit, Copyright 2003

I was very sad to see that the 2003 Copyright is a shortened version of the original book, The Visit, 2001 Copyright. Portions have been deleted, and portions have been edited to change the words that were in the original version. I wanted to have two copies of this book because it would be easier to hold one and read out loud and have someone else hold the second one for the audience to see the pictures. The illustrations are excellent. Everyone that hears this story about how the poem, "The Night Before Christmas" came to be written, just loves it, especially older adults. I wish I could return the 2003 Copyright copy, because I cannot even give it as a gift knowing that the whole story is not there. Continue your search for a 2001 Copyright version, even if you must buy a used copy.

2013 edition

This is the 2013 edition of the book that has been out for a few years. It is the story handed down generation to generation about how the famous poem came about. Clement C. Moore made it for his daughter that was sick in bed at Christmastime. He finally wrote it down 40 years later, shortly before his death. At the end of this book, you can see the full poem in Moore's handwriting.

This book is written in verse similar to "The Night Before Christmas" text. There are rhyming stanzas. It goes through the story of a child visiting her grandfather in New York City, seeing a large city from a child's eyes. Then, her grandfather tells her the story of how his grandfather came up with the famous poem. It explains parts of the story that aren't current, that many kids wouldn't understand now.

I enjoyed the story. It was sweet as well as educational. There were some amazing rhymes, similar to the original poem. I am a sucker for rhyming tales, and the rhymes in this one ranged from adequate to eloquent. At 54 pages, I felt the story was too long to be completely rhyming. It would have been better to tell the story and throw in some poetic pages.

There are a lot of aspects that make this book a winner and just a few that kept it from making the 5 star status. It is beautiful and mostly beautifully written. Some children, especially a little older ones, and many adults will treasure this story.

Great watercoloring book! The paper quality is amazing!

This book is wonderful! I'm a hobbyist with watercolor and I painted the page attached. I used lots of water to test out the paper quality and had no problems with bleed through of color or water. Each page has the same image on both sides so you can practice! Just think how great I'll be by the end of this book. This would be a great gift or fun for a painting party. I can't wait to collect the other two books!

I am very happy with my book

I am very happy with my book. You can feel the quality as soon as you pick it up. The cover is beautiful. I was happily surprised with the large size of the book (9x12 inches). The covers have flaps so that as you progress through the pages you can use the flaps to protect the pages you aren't working on. I like that the flowers are drawn in a soft grey that actually looks like pencil when painted on and recedes nicely into the page so that it lets the watercolor be the main focus. I was a little bit skeptical when I first saw the watercolor paper because it looked a little thin but I gave it a try after watching a video of someone painting on it and it is great. The paper didn't just suck up the color and dry immediately... no it acts just like you would want watercolor paper to do. Stay wet / damp for a while to allow you to paint. A rich source of current visual and historical data about a fascinating group of peoples

"Plains Indian Regalia & Customs" is a spectacular collection of new and old restored photographs of many plains Indians' special clothing, tools and weapons, as well as many historic scenes of plains Indians taken from the early 1800's to the present. Restoration of old time photographic processes of daguerreotypes, ambrotypes and tintypes is carefully described in the introductory pages. A modern reproduction of many historic photographs was achieved by applying the old photographic processes to modern Indian people (models) of today. Thus the reader sees history brought to vivid current life by comparing the pair of photos, old and new, side by side. The author has created a collage of Native American history through costume and ceremony, and much accompanying lore enriches these photographs. Chapters are partially arranged by tribe, for the first 6 chapters on Blackfeet, Cheyenne, Comanche, Crow, Hidatsa and Mandan, and the Lakota. Then other subjects common to many of the tribes are explored. From the Buffalo Dance to Dandies and Two-spirit People, to Captives, Weapons, Body Painting, and War Honors and Coups, most areas of cultural and historic interest that relates intrinsically to style of dress or appearance are touched on. Roles of men and women, boys and girls are also further described, with more color photographs. In all "Plains Indian Regalia & Customs" covers a broad spectrum of detailed information about customs and dress of many of the representative Plains Indian tribal groups. The Appendix contains a number of observations written by a variety of white and other cultural observers in addition to the words quoted from different Native Americans of the Plains peoples. The author cautions: "I leave it to the individual reader to interpret these various observations from a variety of people that worked and lived with and around Plains Indians, as well as the words left to us by Native people themselves (p. 216)." "Plains Indians Regalia & Customs" is a rich source of current visual and historical data about a fascinating group of peoples whose descendants still thrive in North America.

This is a very interesting book. The author goes to great lengths to be accurate & correct on everything he puts in this book. Amazing new photos!!! I love the pictures & details, he does a great honor to those of that time. I have read other books from this author & have never been disappointed, he truly is a great historian. I recommend this book to anyone who would like to know the way it was back then.

Worth EVERY Penny - one of the best pictoral and historic sources around

Scholar, historian, lecturer, and all-around-nice-guy Michael Bad Hand Terry has compiled and written a phenomenal work here. Every page is loaded with stunning full-color photography and artwork depicting the historically-accurate regalia, arts, customs, and trade items of many, many Plains tribes. Bad Hand, who is also a well-known model for Indian-themed photographs (in order to preserve images of authentic Native life), divides the books into chapters according to tribe, as well as according to roles within tribes (for example, he includes priceless information about two-spirit, Berdache, and Dandy roles within tribes--subjects that are often overlooked). The sheer enormity of the man's knowledge is staggering, and even if you never read a single word this book would be a treasure simply for the amazing imagery. Bad Hand reprints paintings from the finest historic and still-living master painters, and takes time to explain what they depict and how the subjects fit into history. But Bad Hand doesn't fall into the bad habit of so many writers: he doesn't write about 19th-Century Indians and then exclude our ongoing lives! He's keen to connect dots between the historic and the modern, explaining how traditional arts and customs have persevered, evolved, and how they continue to matter. Bad Hand has done more than produce a fantastic book; he's ensured that treasured knowledge will pass on to our future generations.

From the dawn of humans on this earth, mankind has expressed its world through its artistic vision. With cavemen it was the prey of the hunt drawn on the walls of caves; with the Greeks and Romans it was sculptural nude images of the gods and male perfection and in the Renaissance it was a rediscovery of the male nude when artists heralded the male nude as the apotheosis of artistic creation.
In "100 artists of the male figure", E.Gibbons portray a vast array of artists whose artistic vision is the celebration of the male form. The beauty of these artists work and their genius is laid out before us to contemplate and admire. The book is grandly beautiful. E.Gibbons gives us these 100 artists living in our lifetime who make the male figure the central image in their art; this book is a "must have" for every artist and institution. It documents these artists of today. May this be only the first volume of such an anthology.

Male Figure Painting--A World-Wide Assortment

E. Gibbons has put together a remarkable book. One hundred painters of the male figure, for the most part nudes, in as many styles and points of view. Painting of the male as a subject is alive and very well. Beautifully produced on quality paper, in rich color, hardbound, this volume is required for every library of figurative art. Artists' comments and contact information are included, but the glorious images speak for themselves.

An Essential and Elemental Book

This book fills a void, featuring the work of artists who celebrate the male figure in a manner that is neither sexual nor in any way apologetic. All styles and media are included save photography which has been covered elsewhere. The book itself and the reproductions are of a very high quality and the choice of artists is top notch. Being an artist of the male figure myself, I especially appreciate each artist's words on why they do what they do. It is heartening and inspiring to know that there are other men and women out there for whom the male figure is a constant source of inspiration and that they are thriving. Kudos to Mr Gibbons and all the artists included. This book belongs on the shelf of everyone who enjoys art featuring the male figure and is an invaluable reference to those of us who paint him.

Dad's Unit in Korean War

My father served as an aircraft maintenance officer in the 4th Fighter Wing during the Korean War. This is the first book that has given me a detailed historical account of that unit's preparation for and involvement in the Korean War. There are a number of books that tell about the pilots, especially the aces from the 4th Fighter Wing. This book does that, but also gives the situation of the support personnel, including personal accounts of their experiences. A superb book!

Combat History of the USAF's Top-Scoring F-86 Unit!

F-86 expert Larry Davis relates the Korean War combat exploits of the 4th FIW, the top-scoring Sabre unit of the war in this nicely-done 2001 book from Schiffer Publishing. Davis, editor of 'Sabre Jet Classics,' the magazine of the F-86 Sabre Pilots Association, has produced what will quite likely become the standard work on the subject.

The 4th FIW added more luster to its WWII record by accounting for 54% of all the MiGs downed over North Korea. Its ranks boasted 24 of the 39 jet aces of the war including the 1st F-86 ace, James Jabara, who was the 2nd highest-scoring ace of the war. And, not surprisingly, the top-scoring fighter squadron of the Korean conflict, the 335th, was assigned to the 4th Wing. The unit certainly lived up to its motto: Fourth but First!

Hurriedly committed to the Korean conflict in November 1950, the 4th was the sole Sabre unit in Korea until November 1951. Made up of many WWII veterans the wing soon took the measure of the MiGs they encountered over MiG Alley. Jabara was the wing's first ace but others - Dick Becker, 'Hoot' Gibson, Dick Creighton, Medal of Honor winner George Davis, Wing CO Harrison Thyng and Bob Love - quickly achieved 'five down and glory.'

Though 4th pilots performed many feats of bravery, the most selfless act occurred in January 1952 on the ground. Due to the activation of the second F-86 wing, the 4th's in-commission rate dropped to 55%. Unsuccessful in solving that problem due to USAF bureaucracy, Thyng went over the heads of the AF chain of command and sent the Chief of Staff a Personal Message stating he couldn't be responsible for maintaining air superiority over North Korea. It could have been a career-destroying move but Thyng was more concerned about the men under his command than personal advancement.

Details on Thyng's gutsy action are given in the book along with full accounts of all the wing's MiG battles. Davis interviewed a number of the wing's aces, MiG killers, ground crew, headquarters staff and even civilian tech reps to tell the wing's full story.

The book is illustrated with hundreds of black & white and color photographs of pilots, aircraft, ground scenes and gun-camera shots. Visually THE 4TH FIGHTER WING IN THE KOREAN WAR is a treat.

In short, Larry Davis' book is a wonderfully-written and well-illustrated tribute to the 4th FIW. The $45.00 price tag is not too high a price to pay for this outstanding chronicle of an illustrious fighter unit.

The 4th Fighter Wing in the Korean War

Larry Davis has done a fine job with this gem. He has told the unit's history with personal interviews and official documents. This volume has a very heathy number of illustrations to allow the non-historian to get the full view. The only gripe I have is a lack of good pictures of the main protagonist of the 4th- the MiG-15. While it is a unit history, a good view of the villain is always nice. That being said, the best part is where the pilots recount some of their more memorable experiences. Without a doubt, this book will be a welcome addition in any library.
