A great way to learn caricature concepts........

If you have been a caricature carver for a long time or just starting out, this book holds a wealth of information for you. All but the most advanced carvers will be able to put some tricks in their bag from this book.
Pete starts with just a piece of basswood and begins carving. You don't even need a bandsaw to do these projects. He takes you from blocking out the head and the body all the way through carving the eyes, mouth, ears, hands, clothing wrinkles, etc. The numerous color photos are presented well and there are enough close-ups to help you stay on track.
Let me end this review by stating that if you don't own Pete's first book "Carving Caricature Head & Faces" then you should. Pete's philosophy on caricature carving is that the head and face are the most important feature of the carving. While "Carving Caricature Figures from Scratch" does detail the head nicely, I think the first book will give you a lot more insight.

Excellent book for learning caricature carving

Pete takes you step by step through the process of carving a complete caricature figure. Each picture shows enough detail to easily follow and the carving steps are frequent enough so there isn't any wondering how he moved from the previous step. Pete emphasizes the importance of carving the head, since the most engaging feature of a caricature is the face. I have most of Pete's books and would recommend them all. If you are a beginning carver (as I am) or an experienced carver looking to try something different, this is the book for you.

Excellent ideas for a weekend getaway

This book provides a colorful guide to day trips in and around Cincinnati. It is well written and provides many "off the beaten path" ideas for travel seekers of all ages. You are bound to read about a place you have never been to but are now dying to visit. Exceptional Visual Reference Book - A must for FB Collectors

This is probably one of the best Flow Blue reference books that I have seen. The photography is exceptional.
While the focus is primarily on several patterns, the assortment of pieces (shapes) shown will certaily be of interest to both the serious and novice collector alike. You will find strange and unusual pieces shown be it a cake plate, syrup pitcher, mug, egg cups, etc. If you're a collector you've probably got a piece that you not sure what is was used for! If so, you'll probably find it (or something similar) here -there is certainly an amazing variety shown!
For those who love Flow Blue this book is an absolute must!

I liked this book. I couldn't give it five stars simply because it needs to tell a bit more history of the units it covers, but it stops short. That may make you take pause, but don't! It's a good resource book that shows personnel listings ( COs, etc.), unit crests, squadron badges and designator colors and color schemes for the aircraft operated in the PTO very nicely,from just prior to the start of hostilities to the conclusion of operations against Japan. I even discovered some unique color schemes that would make eye catching model subjects. A picture is worth a thousand words it's been said. Proof is here, but personally, I would have liked to have had a couple of thousand words more to cover a bit more history. If this sounds like what you would like, IT PROBABLY IS, so give It a look.

Useful Information/Needs More Detail/Poorly Edited

I was so excited when I found this book on Amazon.....a whole big book on dyeing with lots of photos and techniques!
Sadly, I was disappointed in two out of three areas that were most important to me.
First, the good stuff:
The book covers a broad range of dyeing techniques with instructions and photos given for each technique. The photographs of the hand dyed wool are quite beautiful.

However, I was disappointed in this book with a cover price of more than $50. In a book of this size, much more detail could have been added to help explain the methods of achieving each technique. Instead, there are repetitive photographs of the same subjects, such as the three photos of the green wool on page 55. More detailed information could have been given for many of the techniques. For example, there is one photo on page 179 of two pieces of wool already folded for the shibori technique but there is no information or photos on HOW to fold wool. Yes, I can figure it out...but this is a $50 book about technique so give me the technique.
Finally, the editing mistakes in this book are dismal. Misspellings abound and incorrect references to details in photos are found throughout the book. It seems the book was rushed to publication without a care for proper editing.

Fabulous book!

Wow, there is SO much in this book, unbelievable. Whereas most other books on dyeing concentrate on formulas for colors, this one focuses on technique (20 altogether!). The photos and text are near perfect, so easy to follow the directions. And I love the introductory chapters which not only explain the basics but answer the WHY questions - I found information here never given in other books. Well worth reading over and over again. At first, I was a bit confused by the way the chapters were organized by color since they really have nothing to do with a specific color . . . each chapter concentrates on a different type of technique, like pan dyeing, spot dyeing, shibori, etc. And she gives you her formulas (Prochem) for most of the samples pictured. This is expensive but thanks to Amazon made more affordable and in my opinion worth every penny! - A rug hooker in Pennsylvania

Very critical

This book fell far short of my expectation. At first glance the pictures of dyed wool are lovely but the theme of the book is to experiment with a different color each day. "Yellow day" shows everything BUT yellow, "Never enough green" shows no green. It was like the Chapter title didn't fit with the content of that chapter. Instead just tell me you are going to demonstrate "20" different techniques (which by the way I identified 24 different techniques used).
I found numerous discrepencies between what was listed in "START" and directions under the pictures enough so that I was left wondering if the book had really been proof-read. In some cases it involved adding CA crystals in dye pan or in beakers.
The swatches of dyed wool were wonderful but I am dying wool to hook in a rug or wall hanging. How do I use this wool, show me what it looks liked hooked so I know if that is the technique I will need to use to achieve the results I want.
If wool was "overdyed" show me a before and after picture of that swatch.
I am left to wonder if ProChem is sponsoring this book and if so should that not have been stated up front? If not then what was the point of identifying ProChem color numbers - if the book is on dying why not make it generic to any dye product?
I found it a bit "folksy" for my taste - with color wool swatches referred to as as "yummy".

excellent resource!

I am just beginning with pysanky and this book has been a treasure trove! It begins with a brief history of the art, clear explanations and wonderful photos of the tools of the trade, and moves into very easy-to-follow instructions for making decorated eggs. Throughout, the book is filled with wonderful full-color photos of lovely eggs, sparking the imagination with possibilities. The waxing and dying process is documented clearly with photographs and explained fully in detailed step-by-step instructions for making a simple but stunning beginner's egg. Pollak always gives options, not just her preferred method of doing it, explaining the differences between traditional and modern tools, different ways of removing the wax and blowing the egg, etc. There is an entire chapter on playing with color and the effects of one color on top of another color, followed by a chapter on simple two-color designs. She encourages playing with design and color to see what happens! Next are chapters on traditional Ukrainian designs and symbolism, "quilting" on eggshells using patterns inspired by quilts, where to find inspiration for new and original decoration ideas (fabric, cultural images, modern art, etc), and finally, chapters on creating lovely eggshell jewelry and other nontraditional egg designs and uses (like bowls from ostrich eggs!). I would think this book would be as indispensable on the shelf of an experienced egg decorator as I know it is on my beginner's shelf! The only thing to be aware of is that this is NOT a pattern book. It gives clear instructions on how to do pysanky, step-by-step directions for one pattern, shows various design elements used in traditional Ukrainian eggs, and is filled with inspiring photos of finished eggs, but it does not have the patterns for those eggs. I didn't rate it down for this, because it is not designed to be a pattern book, but the buyer should be aware that it doesn't contain patterns. It is, however, filled with education, inspiration, and encouragement!

I've been purchasing instructional books for 15 years and this one is by far the best I've ever read. The instructions of the step by step process were clear and easy to follow. All my other friends that are interested in making these beautiful eggs are purchasing this book. I would highly recommend it's purchase.

Nice book, not for the beginner

This is a very nice and colorful guide, but I would not recommend it for the beginner. It does not go into detail about how to find the center point of the egg, nor how to divide the egg evenly. It has many color photos of beautiful eggs, but there is a lot of white space that could be used to show the reader how to develop the design and in what dye order to use for the best results. This book is a great supplement, but beginners should look elsewhere.

This book offers over 100 eaasy and effective outreach ideas It is arranged so that it is very easy to use too. It is based on John 13:34-35 where we are commanded to "Love each other" and goes on to explain that love is not just a feeling but also an action! This book offers activities that can be completed in one day, over a short period of time and also on a recurring basis. This book is small in size and MIGHTY in ideas! Both in the number of ideas AND the quality of ideas. The intent is how small groups can serve...in the community, the church, the small group, friends and family, and specific needs. However, I am finding SEVERAL additional uses! My family and I can easily use these ideas for devotions and service projects! These are not daunting service ideas...they are easy to step into and make an impact on people's lives! PLUS, there are reflection questions to help everyone consider the personal application...AND there is a great graphic-based coding system to identify particular types of projects/ideas (based on duration, types of service, and seasons). Incredible resource!!!

Good for the beginner, can't replace a big book

Does have lots of patterns, If you have a collection of green you want to identify this is a good cheap book. The pictures are mostly on a red background, distorting the colors to an awful avocado green. The glass is much prettier than it looks. Prices are OK, divide by 2 and that is what you should pay outside of a specialty/city dealer (with no chips, no obvious wear). Boy, are some people going to hate that last sentence.

A Good Starting Point Reference Book for the Collector or Enthusiast::

My wife started to collect Green Depression Glass {GDG} over the last decade. She has a "boatload" of it but never really thought about whether she paying too much or too little for the pieces, what their actual value was / is and what companies actually made the glassware.This book was recommended to her as a collector for starting point of basic information and it did not disappoint.

Depression era glass is a large group/production of a variety of inexpensiive glassware made by a number of glassmaking companies between the early 1920s thru the mid 1940s. Despite the book's modest size of 156 pages, it's narrative is concise and informative. The contents include a brief historical perspective about GDG, concise overviews of 12 manufacturers of GDG and the GDG Era patterns / types of glass ware produced by the various companies. There was also a chapter of various miscellaneous items produced by these companies that are unusual and different from their standardized manufactures.

The photos were of excellent quality - they are all in color and are well captioned / identified by the company that produced them and the glassware pattern/design. The book gives a good overview of the considerable variety and quality of GDG from common place everyday items to pieces that are truley elegant and beautifull that belie the notion that this glassware was /is cheap and lacks artistic merit.

The used copy that we received thru the Amazon Web Site was of excellent quality. We learned a lot about many of the pieces in my wife's collection it's information and pictures. For it's modest price it is an excellent value and we give it a 5 star rating - espisically for the beginner collector - Recommended.

You can lecture youth about God's plan for them...or you can let them experience it. To really make a difference in their lives, just do it with active learning!

Laughter, shouting, and gentle teasing echoed off the canyon walls as eight young people and their youth leader hiked up the mountain trail. But nine teenagers had begun the hike earlier that morning.

No one noticed that Arnold had fallen behind.

In fact, people rarely noticed Arnold-ever. He was a quiet, pimple-faced kid. He started coming to Thom's youth group out of a desperate hope that someone would befriend him. But his shyness and lack of self-confidence seemed to make him invisible to the other kids.

At noon the mountain hikers stopped for lunch. Arnold finally caught up with the group and quietly sat on a boulder near Jennifer. She asked Arnold about his bulging backpack, which was stuffed with goodies. They talked for a half-hour before setting off for the summit.

This time Arnold didn't fall behind. In fact, he hiked at the front of the pack most of the way. His spirit seemed to soar. Somebody had actually noticed him.

When the group reached the mountaintop, Thom handed each person an index card with a small hole punched in the center. He asked each young person to peer through the hole and discover something he or she hadn't noticed before. The teenagers spent a couple of minutes examining the mountaintop through their makeshift "cameras."

Then Thom asked them to tell what they discovered through their peepholes.

"That dead branch," said one.

"There's a bird's next way up in the tree, " another said.

"A rusted beer can," said another.

The last to talk was Jennifer. She said, "I noticed that tiny blue wildflower over there."

Thom asked her how she felt about her discovery.

"Well," she answered, "it's such a beautiful little flower. And I almost stepped on it. I almost crushed this beautiful little thing. We all were in such a hurry to get to the top, we never noticed these tiny flowers."

"How is that like our group?" Thom asked.

Jennifer thought for a minute, then said, "It's exactly like our group." Some of the other kids giggled. "Arnold is that flower," she said. The giggles stopped. "Ever since Arnold joined our group, we've ignored him. I think we've walked right over him without noticing him-just like that flower. On the way up I got to talk with Arnold. I found out he's a neat person. I don't think we take enough time to stop and look-really look-for the good stuff in each other."

A soul-searching discussion followed. The young people made a discovery that changed their group from that point forward. They pledged to work together to uncover the God-given gifts in each other.

Using simple index cards, these young people experienced a change that altered their understanding of the world and their responsibility as part of God's family. They experienced active learning.
