Horror Flicks Photo-Guide!

For decades, the horror movie has been a cinematic staple, supplying many of the silver screen's - and popular culture's - most terrifying and memorable characters. John Edgar Browning's GRAPHIC HORROR, MOVIE MONSTER MEMORIES, a 2012 Schiffer Publishing release, is an appealing illustrated guide to the many horror flicks that have chilled, thrilled, appalled and/or grossed out movie audiences worldwide.

Browning tracks the development of the horror film chronologically with chapters on the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, etc. After a brief summary of the decade, Browning presents hundreds of b&w and color movie posters, lobby posters, movie stills and publicity shots depicting various horror flicks. Some are in English, many are in foreign languages. About 60% of the movies depicted have accompanying commentaries by various horror writers, editors and scholars such as Ramsey Campbell, Donald Glut, F. Paul Wilson, etc. While the comments are interesting, they're often quite brief. I would have liked more verbage.

In any case, MOVIE MONSTER MEMORIES is a visual delight, some 190-odd pages of mostly full-color eye-appealing images of Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, the Wolfman, King Kong, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, Dr. Phibes, Jason, Freddy, et al. Horror fans will undoubtedly enjoy this colorful, comprehensive tribute. Recommended.

Perhaps more than any other type of genre, horror has a legacy that is handed down through the generations and becomes the inspiration for new horror writers and filmmakers. The legacy of horror is at the core of this fun and fantastic new book from Schiffer Publishing. John Edgar Browning (and boy is that a name that exudes horror) takes readers on a trip down horror’s memory lane from the silent era to the present and collects the memories of leading horror writers, editors, anthologists, and historians who wax poetic about some of their favorite and most influential horror films.

Some of the noted commenters include Ramsey Campbell, David Drake, Don Glut, Marvin Kaye, Kim Paffenroth, David J. Skal, Brian Stableford, Tony Timpone, and F. Paul Wilson, to name just a handful. In all there are nine chapters covering the decades of the 1920s to the 2000’s, along with a foreword by David J. Skaal and an afterword by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro.

Each chapter features still pics or original movie poster of the film in question along with the commenter’s memories of that particular film. These also feature some views of rare overseas versions of posters or lobby cards. But these are not just vaporous comments about how they saw it as a kid, blah, blah, blah, but generally more of a discourse on why the film is so important along with liberal doses of interesting anecdotes such as Leslie Klinger’s comments on the Spanish language version of Dracula from 1931 and why he feels it is vastly superior to the Tod Browning/Bela Lugosi version.

For me the book works not only as a scrapbook of horror movie memories, but also a tome collecting images of hundreds of original film posters. Lastly, Browning features a comprehensive list of suggested reading for horror fans of both fiction and non-fiction books written or edited by his vast roll call of contributors. Whether your tastes run from the Universal horror classics, 1950s giant monsters, the Hammer horror films, or today’s modern slasher films, this is a book you’ll be happy to add to your library.

An enjoyable collection of posters, memories and reflections on the history of horror from the silent era to the sequel era

This is a coffee-table book of horror movie posters, covering the history of the genre from the silent days until the time of the book's publication, with short comments on many of the films by prominent writers of horror fiction or horror film criticism. It is organised chronologically and includes posters from a variety of countries. The films themselves are mostly from the U.S. or Britain, but there is a sprinkling of titles from other nations. A few titles were made-for-television.

It's fun to leaf through the book and think about the way the horror film has evolved, with different strands weaving in and out and taking different forms - vampires, ghosts, zombies, possession... Forms would change and key films would send out offshoots. Before 1968, zombies were produced by voodoo, but "Night of the Living Dead" was a dominant mutation which produced a overwhelming proliferation of clones and variations. A basic idea would take a variety of different forms - vampires could be hideously bestial as in "Nosferatu" (1922), sinisterly seductive as in "Dracula" (1931), romantic and sexy as in "Interview with the Vampire" (1994) or comical as in "Dracula: Dead and Loving It" (1995). Some films would chill your marrow with what they left mysterious - "Cat People" (1942) or "The Haunting" (1963) - others would churn your stomach with explicit depictions of cruelty and gore - e.g. "Hostel" (2005). In the forties a sequel meant "Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman" (1943), in the eighties a sequel meant "Friday the Thirteenth, Part VII - The New Blood" (1988). While it is easy to be cynical, each decade has produced its share of films to treasure.

The choice of films covered is certainly open to question. "The Mask of the Red Death" (1964) is the only film included from Roger Corman's Edgar Allan Poe series, and yet all seven Howling movies are presented. And such key films as "Scream" (1996), "The Blair Witch Project" (1999) and "Saw" (2004) are notable by their absence. The latter part of the book does seem to be dominated by sequels and remakes, which is perhaps an accurate depiction of what we were (and are) faced with, but did every film in the "Friday the Thirteenth", "Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" series need to be represented? The posters are fun to look at though, so I'm not particularly bothered.

The inclusion of posters from European and Asian countries sometimes allows for a fascinating glimpse into artistic styles unique to those regions. This is less true in the latter part of the book as painted posters have become less common.

There is a playful introduction by David J. Skal in which he talks about the experience of being a gay horror movie fan fascinated by the poster artists' obsession with boobs. And an afterword by horror novelist Chelsea Quinn Yarbro in which she examines the advantages and disadvantages of movies compared to prose for conveying horror.

The comments by famous writers which accompany many of the posters provide a great deal to the book's appeal, whether it is Ramsey Campbell rhapsodising about the films of Val Lewton, Mort Castle confessing to having been scared by a late night showing of "Plan Nine from Outer Space" or John Kenneth Muir reflecting on community spirit and the lack thereof as depicted in two different giant ant movies.

I was a bit taken aback when I started to read L. Andrew Cooper's comment attached to a poster of "Exorcist II : The Heretic" (1977) beginning : "I came to this one as an adult, knowing that it routinely makes people's scariest-of-all-times lists..." Huh? Exorcist II : The Heretic? I've heard people call it one of the stupidest horror movies of all time, but never one of the scariest. Then, reading on, I realised that the comment had been put in the wrong place. It was supposed to go with the poster of Dario Argento's "Suspiria" (1977) further down the page.

The absolute most complete work done to date

I have been a collector of Allach porcelain after seeing some at a militaria show years back. There are only a couple of sources of information available prior to this very well done work, both in black in white and not all examples are shown. In fact, more are out there and the books prompted one collector to come forward and present a piece not seen or known before. There are two volumes and each one weighs 5 pounds. The photography is crisp and very well done. Methods and actual pictures of how it was produced are a great reference and learning source. Some of these Allach pieces have sold for over $30,000 and those who know it exists and collect it can now compare the examples they have to actual correct examples. I highly recommend this two volume set. One mistake in this area of collecting can cost the uninformed thousands of dollars. There were several high priced "tuned up" examples at the biggest militaria show in Louisville Feb 24-27 this year. Painted wrong or otherwise enhanced or repaired. The most expensive one was price at near $15,000.00. Buy the books and know what to look for, then start your search for this exquisite and very delicate, rare porcelain produced by the head of the German SS, Heinrich Himmler as an example of the pinnacle of the German culture.

Mr Porell has done an outstanding job with regard to presentation and the color pictures are awesome. Great job and HIGHLY recommended to anyone having an interest in Allach!

Best thing is the cover

Don't be fooled into thinking this is a book about constructing such wonderful wood fired ovens as the one shown on the cover. Page 10 says it all: "The majority of people who are planning an outdoor entertainment center or an indoor oven for residential use will most likely choose a modular oven because it is easy to install; requires less maintenance, will heat up in a fraction of the time and has proven ideal for home cooking. Modular ovens are the focus of this book and I will explain all the steps involved in building one." Sometimes the best thing about a book IS its COVER. Very disappointing. Shows one basic design based around the "modular oven" and then many fancy, artificial, brick and masonry fire boxes nothing like the picture shown on the cover. Being from Italy doesn't necessarily provide credentials to write a book on "design and construction" so if that's what you're looking for, pass this one by. I'm taking the effort to send this one back; something I rarely do. The description NOT provided with this book just wasted my time.

My original intention with this book was merely to provide historical details about the history of the German cap making industry and as many makers as I possibly could (something that had always been of particular interest to me!); at least, all of the makers who have come to be recognized as "major" producers (by sheer volume) by the collecting community, or makers whose products have long been recognized as representing consistently excellent (exemplary) quality. I had also long wanted to answer the question about what had happened to perhaps the most famous and well-respected German cap maker of all time, Robert Lubstein. From that beginning, I was then encouraged to expand the book with another complete section that offered a basic overview of German cap construction (though I did not take this to the degree rendered by Jill Halcolm in her multi-volume series) with a focus on reproduction headgear and modified original caps. I was very fortunate, because Schiffer Publishing Ltd. subsequently made major changes to its photographic requirements that, were The Collector's Guide to be printed today, would have blocked many of the pictures I used --actual online samples which came from the Internet (and many sellers with weak photography skillls); none of those actual examples of what a potential buyer faces online would have been acceptable to Schiffer. At any rate, the new section morphed the book into a major production that required three and a half years of research and a considerable outlay of non-reimbursed personal funds for postage and information fees (most Amtsgericht offices charged me for their information)--and for the services of a patent researcher in Berlin that I hired (the Federal Patent Office [Bundespatentamt] requires that all patent inquiries be carried out by a certified researcher selected from a list of names provided, of course, by the Patentamt).

There is a great deal of heated discussion among collectors about German cap manufacturing at the end of the war, and whether this, or that, material was used by this, or that maker.The fact is, we'll never know definitive answers for sure, since production figures from specific manufacturers* are essentially non-existent except in rare cases--thus, conclusions made by anyone, remain conjecture. However, one can make a logical analysis based on trends observed, facts that are known, limited available evidence, and deductive reasoning. For example, collectors continue to argue regarding substitute visor materials. The issue is that certain makers (Robert Lubstein is often chosen as the example) may have shifted from the normal Vulcanfiber visors previously used on visor caps to alternative materials like pressed cardboard (or other substitutes), because of lower cost, material shortages, war damage to visor manufacturers, or all of the above. However, the facts are that--all things considered--Vulcanfiber was relatively inexpensive to produce and did not require any materials critical to the war effort (thus the costs remained essentially affordable)--and it had proven durability. I am more familiar with Robert Lubstein (Berlin) than perhaps anyone outside his family: Herr Lubstein was an excellent businessman and a very sound, efficient business manager; it is therefore highly unlikely (in my opinion), that he would have allowed his entire stock of visors to reach a point of complete depletion--though he may indeed, have run out of a particular size if resupply were slow to arrive. At the close of the war, a far greater problem than material shortages for manufacturers was, in fact, delivery difficulties (a problem throughout the Reich, and one of the reasons why so much cloth SS insignia was found by US soldiers at the Dachau KZ storage facilities near Munich: production was not the issue--the problem was getting the product to the troops in the field since there was no transport (or no fuel stocks) readily available, or un-interdicted routes. Similarly, shipments of a particular needed visor size (if available) might not have been able to get through to Berlin, and thus, in this case, Lubstein might have looked for a viable replacement from a source closer than his Vulcanfiber supplier--but only in the visor size that he was short of, because Lubstein is unlikely to have been satisfied with any material but the Vulcanfiber if he could get it. Lubstein the man, was a stickler for old school production and I simply do not agree that he would have made a 100% blanket quality change to Ersatz materials in any case but one where he truly had no Vulcanfiber visors remaining (i.e., for a given size) and no hope of getting a refill in the time needed.
One wonders, in the last two to four months of the war, how much EREL product Lubstein was able to move out of Berlin to customers, given the same transportation problems?

At any rate, conclusions that I reach in my book are based on available evidence, available facts, trends observed, personality factors of the actors (when known), and logical deduction based on all of the above.

* However, Herr Lubstein--always the supremely efficient man--was a person who did leave behind personal copies of extensive inventory details for his firm (dated 1946 and 1947), along with copies of the legal documents concerned with closing the sale/purchase of the Heinrich-Roller Straße property in 1939 between the original owners, Stein & Herz [these two families left Germany to emigrate to the United States in 1939 or 1940], and Robert Lubstein (all of the above information is in my possession, very kindly provided to me by his grandson).

Outstanding Work!!

This book is an outstanding effort, an invaluable reference for both the neophyte and advanced collector. Superb photography combined with well-written and germane commentary on each type of soft headgear worn by the German Wehrmacht before, and during WWII provides the reader/researcher with information not available in similar works. The author has included an extensive section covering the many known cap/hat manufacturers, with special detail given to Robert Lubstein, perhaps the premier maker of pre-1945 German visor caps. An excellent "quick reference" section details how to spot reproductions and alone is worth the price of the book and will save you some money if you are new to the hobby.If the author should read this, I own a Panzergrenadier officer visor with an identical mark as pictured on page 251 of the book, upper right corner, except the diamond containing the Masonic logo does not have "Berlina" below it, but the maker name of "Josef Huber uniformen, Landshut, Bay." followed by street address that I cannot decipher. (Photo attached) This maker is not included with those listed in the book.
I heartily recommend this work to anyone with an interest in this subject.

Wonderful book for beginer or advanced collector!

I purchased Gary's book last year, and I am quite certain that it has already paid for it's self by helping me distinguish the fakes from the originals.
In my opinion it is an absolute must for beginers, and a fasinating delight for the advanced collector. Advanced collectors will find an exhaustive reference, concering the history of most all German military cap manufacturers, 1930's-present, 95% emphasis on Third Reich. The fact that Gary is a German language major enabled him to contact present day German Government agentcies, allowing him to extract tons of lost or forgotten information from vast German Archives. Gary's mastery of the language gives the reader a unique perspective of the 'German way of thinking', concering design, manufacturing, advertising and distribution of German cloth military headgear.
As for the photographs, well there are loads of 4/color photos. Beautiful originals as well as some ugly fakes, and everything in between. Original period photos of the military men wearing their headgear, indepth discussions on fabric types and grades, charts on fabric weaves, and cap "disections" are also contained. DRGM, RZM, patient and sweatband embossing stamps are all addressed.
Over all, a very well rounded collectors guide. With such an enormous undertaking, only the lack of space and extra pages limits any addional information. The only thing wrong with the book is that it does not have a volume or two to acompany it. Great job on a difficult subject! Worth every penny.

Fantastic book, accurate with lots of details.

This book includes details on every vintage doll and outfit created for Barbie and friends by Mattel the US market in the vintage and mod years. The author includes a large number of full-color photographs, price comparisons, and amazing details of what is included with each doll and fashion. While it's true that not each outfit includes a photo, the details included are more than enough to make this reference book more than my primary go-to book for all things vintage Barbie.

I think what makes this book unique and so helpful is how each outfit is listed. The author has included a list of each piece--and which item is tagged--as well as the approximate price of what those pieces are currently selling for on the secondary market (or were when this book was published), and in what condition. You can see that simply adding the correct pair of shoes, or the right necklace, for example, to your outfit, might be what makes the outfit that much more valuable.

This book is an essential for anyone in the Barbie hobby. For the price, too, it just can't be beat. You should also consider the All About Accessories book, for another fantastic resource.

Not What I Expected...

I was disapointed with this book. I was hoping it would have more pictures and close ups of the clothing, etc. Her other book " It's All About The Accessories" is "the" best book yet! I was hoping this book would be like that one. If you are a beginner collector it could help you, but with all the descriptions and no pictures to see what she list it wont help that much. I would like to see her put out a book with all the vintage and mod clothing pictured like the Accessories book, that would be wonderful and I surely would buy it no matter how much it cost! I also would love her to put out a book on the "Best Buy" clothing and accessories and also the "Get Ups N Go" line.

This book has wonderful pictures and good information on vintage Barbies, Skippers and Ken dolls. It is limited to older Barbies, Pre-1970 but the photos and pricing information is very helpful in understanding what collecting and collectors of Barbies is about. On its own it is really just a start in educating collectors on these dolls but it is a good addition to any library.

A Must Have for Panzer Enthusiasts!

After setting impossibly high standards for his first volume, Scott has met or exceeded them in all aspects of his second volume, which concentrates on field gray, denim and other uniforms worn by German armored vehicle crewmen (and, in some cases, wannabes) in World War II. The period pictures are extraordinary and the images taken of uniform and headgear examples from advanced collections around the world illustrate the topic in extraordinary detail. Printed in full color throughout and printed on glossy stock paper, the book is an example for those who wish to publish titles on uniform collecting. I can hardly wait for the remaining two volumes on the topic!

The best.

Scott Pritchett and Schiffer Publishing are setting new standards for military history books. I did not realize how many Schiffer books I had in my library till I really got to counting. What more can one say other than to confirm what has already been said. These books are the best: printing, photos, text, hardbound, I just honestly don't know how they can get better. The price is high but not unreasonable for such quality. I am not that interested in the panzer wraps but these books are of such great quality and clear pictures, I had to have this set for my collection. Even though this is not my area of interest, I would not hesitate to buy these books again and highly recommend them.

Interesting pictures. Very badly written.

First, the good. The pictures are lovely(except the particularly ugly and slightly suggestive pagoda box which looks more like something found in the seedier regions of the internet), and I quite like the shapes of the acorn and finial topped boxes. Bowers uses exotic woods in all of the projects and the results are beautiful. The shapes are interesting, and the book progresses from simple to complex. There is good detail at the beginning on how to turn a simple cylinder box, and there is a discussion on friction fitting the lids and the impact humidity has on the fit.

In terms of technique, I would have liked more hints on how to hold the tools and how to move them when hollowing and shaping. I found Michael O'Donnel's books on technique and on turning green wood to be much much more detailed and useful than this one.

This book is written in a strange verbose fussiness which reads as if the author always had a thesaurus at hand. It also has an odd mix of detail and vagueness. For example, the author describes the golden mean as 1.6180339887, a completely useless level of detail, since the tools wood turners use to measure and turn wood are nowhere near capable of that sort of accuracy, and then proceeds to go on about how fractions such as 3/5 and 2/3 are ratios that are off by 0.014 and 0.059. Is this helpful? Not at all, and leaves off the other 7 digits of accuracy the author seems to think important. In order to get down to that last digit of accuracy, for a box where the diameter is 5.0000000000 inches, you would need to measure the height to be 8.0901699435 inches. Good luck. Think this entire paragraph is wasted space on Amazon? Well it's free and it cost you 30 seconds to read. The book, on the other hand cost you $11 and should be better written than its reviews. With all that detail you would expect specific instructions on the angles to hold tools, what difficulties you might encounter and how to avoid them, and how to make the modified tools that are used. More vagueness comes in the form of finishing. There are references to diluted lacquer, but no suggestions on what kind of lacquer or how to dilute it.

Then there's the odd assumptions. Here is a quote from the first page of Chapter 1, The Cylinder Box: "After measuring the 1-1/2 inch opening of the O'Donnell jaws, mark the measurement on both ends of the stock." I'm not sure why the author assumes we all use O'Donnell jaws on our lathes. I think they are mostly used on Axminster chucks and I don't think I've ever seen an Axminster lathe or even an Axminster chuck. (Yes, I know they can be bought in the US.) In fact, it seems that the author assumes we all use Axminster lathes. In any case, it's not like the book starts with a list of recommended equipment and special tools. As another reviewer points out, there are some references to modified tools, but no discussion of what the modifications are. One exception to this is a picture of a "square-nozed scraper with the corner rounded." The picture looks as if the actual cutting edge is actually rounded (as opposed to the sides as I've seen in other books) and I'm not sure how that is used. It looks like it is just used to rub the bottom and sides of the inside of the box but there are no instructions. The author also assumes, that we all know what the Ray Key hollowing tool is, and for some reason thinks it's important that we use a Oneway live center and a 1-1/4 inch Ashley Iles roughing gouge, but doesn't mention the maker of other tools. He also refers to a "modified hollowing tool" and there is no discussion of what the modifications are. Could it be the modified spindle gouge, the Ray Key hollowing tool he mentions in the first chapter? It's not clear.

inspiratonal but not very informative

this book is inspirational in that it has some awsome galleries and demonstrates a good variety of boxes. However, the projects demonstrated in this book "which is the majority of the book" often lack sufficient detail in the steps and after reading through all of them there are still some grey areas of technique and tools. maybe these are covered in another book, i dont know. i would say this book is a decent buy if you are experianced and looking for inspiration but for a begginer who has never turned a box i would say that one of the genaric introductory turning books would be a better buy as most of them have a basic box in the projects section.

The perfect gift.

My mother is an avid Fenton collector and her favorite has always been milk glass. She has been collection for over 40 years and this book was just what she needed to supplement her collection. She uses this book like a her own private encyclopedia and I am so glad I purchased this for her. Great book
