Love it!

What a great idea! There are so many wonderful and encouraging tidbits in this book. Plus, the CD is a great bonus! I love that there are things to think about, such as why I am teaching or what my time means to the kids I work with. I would recommend this to anyone looking to uplift and encourage their volunteers, or even looking for some encouragement themselves.

Great Christian Kids Resource

This book is just full of ideas of how to make the Bible interesting to children ages 5-10. I used it at a Christian summer camp we ran and the kids really enjoyed the activities. The authors break down the text of the armor of God into different types of armor and have a Bible story that goes with each. Then they have about 4 or 5 activities that you can pick and chose from depending on time and age group. I found it very helpful to just have it all there instead of having to come up with creative ideas on my own. Not every activity did I like, but most of them. Worth buying if you work with kids and want some hands-on ways to make the Bible real.

My personal favorite in the Travel Guide series

This book has 13 lessons on the armor of God (Ephesians 6). The activities are designed for multi-age groups of children so it is easy to use with a few or many children. Supplies needed are clearly noted in the margins. Each lesson has almost 2 hours of activits. You can use them all or choose the ones that fit you best. All the activities are hands-on and very applicable. Throughout the 13 week course each child will complete a Travel Journal. This is a keepsake to help the children remember the lessons and apply them in their everyday lives. (A great tool for parents to gain insight into their children's spiritual lives and understanding as well!) Each chapter also includes a Pathway Point (central concept of the lesson)and an In-Focus verse (summary verse). The lessons begin with a Departure Prayer followed by First Stop Discoveries to futher introduce the children to the lesson's topic. Story Excursions help the children not just hear but experience the Bible Story. Children collect reprodicible activities or 'souvenirs' along the way and finally close with a "Home Again Prayer". Easy to use, hands on resource for K-5th grade children.

Okay for a fill in curriculum

We needed something for in Children's Church for about 12 weeks to fill in between other curriculum. This is easy to follow, pretty teacher friendly, and has some "out of the box" things that weren't in our last curriculum, so that's a nice change for the kids. There's nothing especially original or fabulous about this book, but it's also got a low price, so that's great. Some of the lessons are a little too abstract I think, and not really "to the point" -- it seems like they beat around the armoured bush a little too much.

Our children's church is ages 4-9 and has about 20-25 kids in it. This will work great for the time being and is certainly worth the investment for some of the smaller/mid-size churches out there!

*** UPDATE: We've finished the book now, and I have to say, I was a little disappointed. Some of the activities seemed WAY too abstract for the kids, and kind of off base scripturally even. It was hard to see the connection between the Bible story of choice and the armor of God. It seemed like we spent way too much time off in some other part of the Bible and I wish we would have focused on Ephesians a bit more.

I loved the format Strohm used to deliver the material in his book. The bullet points followed by thorough explanation makes for a very interesting and easy read. As in his previous books, his excellent pictures bring to life the subject matter and his channeling sessions add a unique dimension. I highly recommend Aliens Among Us.

An excellent guide to being part of the post modern church

In an excellent follow-up to his guide to post modern Christianity SOULTSUNAMI, Dr. Leonard Sweet from Drew University has provided us with an excellent "navigator's map" to post modern Christianity with the publication of this newest work Aqua Church. Dr. Sweet has again provided a creative approach to those who are seeking to be post modern Christians in a post modern church. It will shake the foundations of those who seek to maintain a "business as usual" approach to the church, but it will also challenge those who seek to be post modern Christians without being part of a post modern church. As with the earlier volume, Sweet provides the convinced, the seeker and the hesitant with a new way of looking at the Christian faith, the church and the future. Enjoy this excellent work as it navigates you, the church and wider culture through the challenging currents of the Christian faith, the Christian church and the world of postmodernism. You will not be disappointed!

Another remarkable book for church leaders everywhere.

The first thing that I did after I read this book was to order another five of them for use in the teams that I lead. This book is in the tradition of SoulTsunami, a must read for church leaders everywhere.
Leading in the postmodern culture is a lot different than the corporate model that a lot of churches have adapted. The 21 Irrefutable Laws don't seem so irrefutable in a culture where there are no absolutes anymore and those who insist that there are, are often looked at with suspicion.

Lays out the basics for "doing church" in the 21st Century

Leonard Sweet is definitely the "guru" of post-modern church life. He articulates principles that are essential for guiding the church through the troubled waters of today's society. As much as it is crucial to have a solid foundation of the person of Jesus, the Bible, and tradition, it is also important to value creativity and intuition. Although Sweet gives you the general principles, he stresses that no two churches are alike, and it is futile to attempt to copy even the most successful ones (Willow Creek, for example). A previous reviewer felt that Sweet was excessive in his many examples and illustrations. I don't agree with that assessment, even though, admittedly, I did get a little weary with his constant use of the sailing-ship metaphor (a metaphor which would seem rather anachronistic to a post-modern society). In fact, I'm sure many pastors could find a wealth of sermon illustrations in this book, even though that is not the main purpose.
One interesting point that did occur to me while I was reading "AquaChurch" was the fact that, since this book was written a couple of years ago and emphasized the fast-changing nature of society, that society had changed at such a rapid pace that parts of the book were obsolete by the time I read it! Maybe Sweet will update this volume every few years to keep it in print and relevant. Nonetheless, this is a very useful book for all who are in church leadership.

Military history has played a very strong role in the evolution of Florida society and culture. the early history of Florida is a military history of conquest as the land was captured by Spain who saw numerous attempts by France and England to attack and capture Spanish East and West Florida. English control of Florida ceased with the Siege of Pensacola in 1781, a Revolutionary War engagement that gave Florida back to Spain. Invasions by American volunteer armies under General Andrew Jackson in 1813 and 1818, fighting Creek and Seminole uprisings, led to the annexation of Florida to the United States.

To protect the new territory, a string of military forts and bases were established throughout Florida to protect the coastlines and cities. As part of the Confederate States of America, Florida saw her share of military engagements and occupations as port cities like Key West, Pensacola, and others became important points on the Union blockade of the South.

Following The War Between The States, Florida became a major training and embarkation point during the Spanish-American War in 1898 and the site for major military training bases after World War I. Naval aviation brought the need for good weather training sites in the 1920s including the development of Naval Aeronautical Stations in Pensacola and naval bases in Jacksonville, Tampa, Key West, and other locations. Eglin Air Force Base, the largest air force base in the world in size, was created to provide weapons and armament training for World War II and continual support services into the 21st Century.

FLORIDA AT WAR: FORTS AND BATTLES is a well written and illustrated book that describes the battles, forts, and other topics that preserve and honor the heritage of Florida's bitter conflicts from pre-historic Native American skirmishes to wars of modern times. As with any book of this type, there are mistakes and they are listed below:

*Page 109-Not mentioned is that in January, 1862, a landing party from the USS Hatteras entered the town of Cedar Key and destroyed the railroad depot and other buildings , the railroad wharf, railroad cars, several vessels, and the abandoned Confederate defenses. A small force of 23 men from the 4th Florida Infantry Regiment were left to defend the town. Fifteen were taken prisoner while the rest escaped on a ferryboat.

*Pages 160-161-The Pinecastle Army Air Field served as the Headquarters, Army Air Force School of Applied Tactics. It was both a depot and an airfield. Airfields in the following cities were used by the above school-Kissimmee, Dundee, Lakeland, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Zephyrhills, Brooksville, Bashnell, Leesburg, Keystone Heights, Gainesville, Cross City, Dunnellon, and Mountbrook. Also, members of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force's initial aviation component trained at Pinecastle Army Air Field prior to deploying overseas in World War II. Another item not mentioned is the Babcock Aircraft Corporation of Deland, Florida which had developed a light aircraft designed by Verne C. Babcock. Production preparation was curtailed by the war. They actively sought subcontract work and ultimately landed a 24 April 1942 agreement (14 February 1942 Letter Of Intent) for 50 CG-4As at $950,187.50. This was raised by 102 at $1,887,503.88 on 19 May 1942 and then to 152 at $2,837,691.38, all for delivery by February, 1943. With subsequent cost overruns, the value rose to $3,245,602.36. The firm set up glider manufacturing in fairground buildings and a tent. This naturally introduced quality control problems, along with the usual material and manpower shortages, such that Babcock's progress was poor. By November, 1943, the company had delivered only 54 gliders and the work was cut back on 24 June 1944 to 60 CG-4As, the last delivered on 6 July 1944. This saved them from cancellation for default, but the U.S. Government tok a loss of $743,710.85.

A great way to teach kids about God's world and about God's Word

Amazing Science Devotions for Children's Ministry is a collaborative effort among members of the staff at Group Publishing. The book consists of 41 science experiments for kids, each designed to not only teach a science lesson but to also show kids how learning about science can teach us about the beauty and complexity of God's world.

Each experiment consists of an "Exploration Element" which is the objective for the experiment; a "Bible Benchmark" which gives a Bible reference for the lesson; a list of supplies needed for the lesson; a list of optional supplies, and a note about preparation.
Steps for each lesson/experiment are numbered and are very easy to follow. And there are experiments for learning about a wide range of science-related topics like fingerprinting, spiders weaving their webs, and gravity. Each experiment/lesson is designed to take about 10-15 minutes making them ideal for use during Sunday School classes or Vacation Bible School.

Black-and-white, cartoon-like illustrations are scattered throughout the text. Both a scripture index and a subject index are included at the end of the book.

What I Like: Everything.

What I Dislike: Nothing.

I have used this book over and over with elementary kids and I always hear squeals of delight and see total engagement in their faces. Must Have Reference for Juliana Jewelry

If you don't already know, DeLizza and Elster jewelry is among the most sought after costume jewelry around. Their use of unfoiled stones, art glass and other specialty rhinestones in fantastic multi-layered designs has made Juliana jewelry a standout. This beautiful jewelry is also extraordinarily well made, so it has held up well over the years.

Since DeLizza and Elster jewelry was never signed, it's always been difficult for the average collector to identify. Fortunately, Musetti's book contains a very detailed section on how to identify Juliana jewelry. She also uses lots of photos so that you can clearly understand exactly what she is describing to help with identification.

The book contains over 450 beautiful color photographs of DeLizza and Elster Juliana jewelry. My only criticism of the book is that some of the photos are a bit repetitious. On the other hand, I was also very pleased that Musetti included photographs of pieces that were attributed to and signed by other makers, such as Weiss, that were actually made by DeLizza and Elster.

I have a few pieces of jewelry in my collection that I had long suspected were Juliana, and I was delighted that my assumptions could actually be confirmed with photographic evidence from this book.

This is an absolute must have book for both the fledgling as well as experienced collector of costume jewelry.

Mouth-Watering Photos, But.....

Mouth-watering photos of glam Juliana parures, but not extremely useful for the collector of the odd brooch or set of earrings found at yard sales and second-hand shops.

There are few details regarding identifying characteristics, and I don't believe there is any first-hand information from either Mr. DeLizza or Mr. Elster in the text.

Savvy jewelry collectors easily recognize the D & E cat's eye and Easter egg gems but there are many other pieces which might not be so quickly identified; I was hoping for further information on these unpretentious yet lovely finds.
