An outstanding book! Definitely worth the money!

This series that Schiffer publishing is producing is outstanding and I hope to see all go into second volumes just like the Imperial German books did! The Russian book offers a unique look at Czarist Russia as a whole. I particulary liked the photo of the Russians riding the Harley Davidson and all of the Cossacks! I am definitely going by all the books in this series because it is a bargain considering the cost of the images. I am really look forward to when the French book is out!

Great period photos, pretty good on the "Study" part

Another of Schiffer Publishing's high-end compilations of original photographs (see the similar volumes on the World War One German army, Austro-Hungarian army, and British army), and once again tops in quality, with glossy pages and best reproduction standards. As for content - very good. Maybe a tad below the level of the volumes for other countries due to the slight backwardness of Russia at the time. Some of the photos are a bit retouched, some have signs of damage through time and handling. Concentrates on photos of individuals, almost all anonymous. Some interesting insights into details of uniform are provided by the captions, such as unusual materials, special tailoring, homemade items. Concludes with color photos of surviving pieces of equipment and uniform. Even though this is a big thick book, the peruser might get the feeling this is just an overview of a subject that much more could be written on (after all, the German army got *two* volumes). Criticisms? Well, some of the transliterations from Cyrillic into English are iffy, and some seem gratuitous (like Southwest Front = Yugozapadnyi Front, big deal - that doesn't provide any insight). There is little attempt to put the photos into context or show any trends during the war years. And the data pages (list of regiments, etc.) in the back are taken from war-time Austrian sources, so the transliterations are into German spelling, not English. Why not use Russian sources? You have to wonder if the author even reads Russian.
Summary: an excellent collection of photos printed at top quality. For the person (like me) who likes to see through a window into the past, studying the uniforms and scenes, and staring at these faces and wondering what the fates of these nameless persons were. I'm hungry for more, but of course the subject is a favorite of mine.

As I have stated in my other reviews for Mr. Coils books - they are outstanding and I am really looking forward to Mr. Coil doing more books. I have been a Schiffer fan for many years and they too always do an outstanding job. Thanks
