Unnamed Graves, a Secret Cemetery, Files Closed to the Public and Stored in, The Vault. During World War II, in the North African/Mediterranean and European Theaters of Operation, 96 American soldiers were convicted by Army General Courts-Martial and executed for desertion, murder and rape. Their victims were 26 fellow American soldiers and 71 British, French, Italian, Polish and Algerian civilians. The executions were not ad hoc killings. General Eisenhower, or another theater commander, approved every proceeding, but the Army did not trumpet the crimes. After the war, the Army searched for a suitable site to inter the remains of all 96 men. It chose a plot of land adjacent to but technically outside of the World War I American cemetery of Oise-Aisne. The area is separated from the main cemetery by a high stone wall, concealed from view, and is closed to casual visitors. Called, Plot E, by the staff, others refer to it as, The Fifth Field. The judicial files on the 96 were even harder to find until now.

About the Author
For over thirty-four years, Colonel French L. MacLean, United States Army, (Ret.), served with many of the leading lights of the United States Army in the latter half of the Twentieth Century Generals with the names Shinseki, Abizaid, Dempsey, Petraeus, Meigs, Saint, Joulwan, Hendrix, Maddox, Wallace, Rodriguez, Brown, Campbell, Jordan, Anderson, Riggs, Goff, Funk, Blackwell and many others. Born in Peoria, Illinois, he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1974, the second class that, The stars shined on. Commissioned in the Infantry, he served four tours of duty in Germany, commanded two companies and a battalion, attended the School for Advanced Military Studies, fought as a battalion operations officer in a mechanized infantry battalion during Operation Desert Storm in Kuwait and Iraq and served as the historian for the U.S. Army Fifth Corps during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003 in Iraq. He additionally served as the Inspector General for the U.S. Army in Europe, and as a course director and professor at the National War College in Washington, DC, where he taught military strategy to many of the military s future leaders of this century. Knowing countless officers and non-commissioned officers, growing up as a scout platoon leader, armored cavalry troop commander, military historian, and one of the Army s senior Inspector Generals, Colonel MacLean knows where to look to find the keys to the Army s historical secrets in this case literally where all the bodies were buried. A WWII story hidden for two-thirds of a century!

Colonel MacLean has followed Custer's Best with a WWII story that has remained hidden for two-thirds of a century. The Fifth Field is a book about the 96 American soldiers in North Africa and the European Theater of Operations who were executed by U.S. authorities for heinous crimes: murder and rape. Sometimes desertion, AWOL, and robbery were included crimes.
This book is a great read for those interested in WWII history, capital crimes, justice, and legal proceedings. It would make a great text for law students at many of our nation's law schools. It should be included in the training and education of all military lawyers.
In The Fifth Field's Legal Forward, Illinois attorney T.G. Bolen superbly frames the legal and criminal justice systems of the era.
Many people know the story of Eddie Slovik from the TV movie of the 1960s. What is not widely known is the fact that Slovik did not just desert once, but he repeatedly left his unit going AWOL or deserting to avoid danger. U.S. Army authorities repeatedly tried to convince him and cajole him to not do that again. Eventually General Eisenhower approved the death sentence. (The Theater Commander had to approve every execution sentence. It was not approved at the local level in the military chain of command.)
Louis Till was executed for committing rape and murder. His teenage son, Emmett, was a victim of murder himself in 1955 in the South during the American Civil Rights movement.
Charles Spears murdered a fellow soldier over five dollars.
William Harrison raped and murdered a seven year old Irish girl.
Aniceto Martinez raped a 75 year old woman in England.
Woodrow Parker murdered a Polish man, and raped and murdered a Polish girl in Germany.
All 96 stories are unique, compelling, and personal.
Not all rape and murder convictions resulted in the death penalty. 1136 others convicted of rape and/or murder received sentences of life in prison.
Some of the soldiers convicted of rape and executed had the woman they raped testify against them at the trial. This introduces an interesting observation. Recently (2013) there was a news story in the U.S. of a man convicted of rape and being sentenced to only 30 days in jail. Yet just two generations ago, in the mid-1940's, the U.S. executed people for a conviction of rape.
This book will easily serve as the launching pad for a discussion about the death penalty for capital crimes in contemporary America.
The pictures in this book add a unique dimension of history to this story. These are the first published pictures of U.S. citizens sentenced to die by a military court since the pictures of Lincoln's assassin conspirators were photographed on the gallows in 1865.
Meticulously researched and written with clarity, this book puts on the map a story about WWII that none of us knew about. Colonel MacLean read and studied "the death book", the hand written ledger of these executed soldiers. The story of his research exploits to get in to "The Fifth Field", the cemetery in France where these 96 soldiers are buried, is an exciting and compelling story alone. U.S. officials in France were initially unwilling to admit that the place even existed! But, The Fifth Field, Plot E of the Oise-Aisne Cemetery and Memorial in France, most certainly does exist!

Pulitzer worthy.

I am honored to have the opportunity to review this book. Colonel MacLean and I served together in Germany in the mid seventies. He was a freshly minted new Lieutenant from West Point and I was a grizzled nineteen-year-old corporal. I doubt that either one of us would have ever guessed in 1974 that the subject of this book would have crossed through our lives on so many different levels. At that point we were formulating plans to kill everyone we met on the field of battle. Today my job largely consists of figuring out ways to keep the government from killing people.
The execution of 96 American soldiers in Europe, North Africa, & Mediterranean theaters of War during WWII was one of the best kept secrets of that era. Not now though, MacLean blows the crypt door off with a Defcon four force.
This book is monumental in every sense. Col MacLean has tackled a subject that no other military historian has ever even thought about exposing. From Black Jack Pershing to George Marshall to Dwight Eisenhower this subject, the execution of American servicemen in WWII touched every senior officer in the command.
Over a series of thematic chapters MacLean painstakingly details the crimes that were committed by the condemned men. The efforts in obtaining and reviewing the tens of thousands of pages of documents was Herculean in scope. Those efforts result in a strident narrative that conveys a sense of almost being there.
MacLean's breadth of coverage is impressive, his intimacy with military history pronounced. He paints a finely balanced picture on the grand canvas of a world war, affording the unspeakable often horrific criminal acts to once again jump to life. As to whether or not the condemned men were guilty in every case, he correctly leaves that up to the reader to decide.
French MacLean's The Fifth Field is to be welcomed, exploring as it does frequently overlooked and often truly shocking and dramatic facts that I am fairly certain were never really considered in the mammoth historical context of WWII.
The Fifth Field is extremely well researched and a delight to read, brimful of fascinating insights into extraordinary events that almost nobody in the military knew about with the exception of a few. Sorting this out sixty years later is a stroke of genius that is worthy of the fraction of time that it would take one to digest.

Brings the human side out in the soldiers executed, the victims, the guards and the officers in charge of them

The author was a professor at the National War College, when he discovered that the Army had executed 96 soldiers in Europe in World War II. I could not put this book down and if I did not know that this account was completely true, I would swear it was fiction. At times, I sort of felt sorry for some of these soldiers, but then you read what they did and you do not feel sorry at all for many of them. The author has information from the trial records, execution reports and even the secret military cemetery in France, where most of the executed men are still buried. The author even included some photographs of four executions, two hangings and two firing squads. When you look at the faces of some of the guards at the execution, you can easily see that they do not want to be there. The author also talks about that in the book and how some of the guards became quite ill. But the real character in the book is the hangman Sergeant John Woods. He was a real character and someone you will not easily forget.
