About the Author
Dr. William Wolf has written fourteen books and numerous articles on World War II aviation combat and is an avid collector and historian, having over 22,000 World War II books and magazines, three miles of microfilm, and thousands of photos in his library, along with numerous pieces of World War II aviation memorabilia and aces' autographs.

Volume Two of Mammoth 5th Air Force History!

And here we have Volume Two of THE FIFTH FIGHTER COMMAND IN WORLD WAR II, William Wolf's history of that war-winning USAAF command. This second volume covers from THE END IN NEW GUINEA, THE PHILIPPINES TO V-J DAY in some 450+ pages illustrated with hundreds of photographs and illustrations.
Inspired by Roger Freeman's 'Mighty Eighth' books, Wolf spent years researching 5th FC, compiling and reading endless official reports and documents, interviewing 5th FC vets and amassing a huge collection of photographs. The result is this three-volume history published by Schifler Publishing.
Volume Two continues Wolf's thorough coverage of 5th FC ops, detailing every significant mission, command change, occurence, etc. in the last 23 months of the Pacific War. The deeds of famed airmen like Lynch, Johnson, Bong, Kearby, McGuire, Shomo and others are recounted along with those less well-known pilots. Those deeds are set against a backdrop that details the changing strategic situation in the Pacfic, tactical developments in-theater, developments of bases, introduction of new aircraft, etc. At times, the level of detail is almost overwhelming. It's best to savor Wolf's book a chapter at a time.
Visually, the book is a treasure trove for 5th FC fans with hundreds of pix, maps and illustrations of pilots, aircraft, ground crews, Japanese a/c, gun-camera images, bases and so on. Many of the shots have never been seen before. There's also seven pages of color views of 5th FC and Japanese aircraft.
As with Volume One however, the claims made by 5th FC pilots generally haven't been compared to actual Japanese losses in the book. Perhaps Wolf didn't have that info when he was writing these books or perhaps he didn't want to spend another billion years(!?!) researching the topic.
In any case, THE FIFTH FIGHTER COMMAND will serve as THE definitive history of - and a great tribute to - that war-winning command. Highly recommended.

Excellent Pilot Detail

This book is an excellent source of understanding of what the World War 2 fighter pilot had to deal with in combat. Lots of very good detail and lots of pictures to make the story line more meaningful.
