Deborah Forman is the author of Perspectives on the Provincetown Art Colony and Contemporary Cape Cod Artists: Images of Land and Sea. She has interviewed hundreds of artists for her books and articles on Cape Cod and New England.

Provincetown's Amazing Artists

A friend recently gifted me with Deborah Forman's Perspectives on the Provincetown Art Colony. This two-volume set is an amazing artistic anthology. I have long awaited such a book.
Forman's book is the product of thirty years of interviewing and writing about the artists, gallery owners, collectors, and writers who either lived or summered in this incredible place at the tip of Cape Cod.
She describes the history of this land where the Pilgrims first came ashore and where they signed the Mayflower Compact before moving on to Plymouth. This amazing place, where the natural light draws artists from around the world, was recognized in 2010 by the National Trust for Historic Preservation "as the home of the nation's oldest arts colony".
Forman discusses the contributions of Provincetown artists whose work is representative of most of the major movements in American art. They include: Charles Hawthorne, Henry Hensche, Hans Hofmann, Franz Kline and Blanche Lazzell as well as the modern day artists: Anne Packard, Hilda Neily, Robert Motherwell, Paul Resika, Michael Mazur and many, many others. Examples of each artist's work are depicted in plates that are truly magnificent.
I hope that Forman has enough interview material left to write a third volume, which will include additional Provincetown artists such as Robert Cardinal, Laurence Young, Lois Griffel, Simie Maryles, Joanette Egeli, Cedric Egeli, Arthur Egeli, Chet Jones, John Dowd, John Clayton, Elizabeth Pearl, Jeannie Motherwell, as well as figurative artists like Rob Adamcik and Larry Collins.
This book is comprehensive and quite readable. It is truly an astounding treasure.
