Dr. William Wolf has written fourteen books and numerous articles on World War II aviation combat and is an avid collector and historian, having over 22,000 World War II books and magazines, three miles of microfilm, and thousands of photos in his library, along with numerous pieces of World War II aviation memorabilia and aces' autographs.

Last of the set

The final volume in the set, this puts the cap on the 5th and it's legacy. Obviously you need this too complete the set and it does not let you down. Only complaint, should and could have added a few more color profiles and pictures.Written history is perfect and complete.

The Conclusion to a Monumental Unit History!

William Wolf concludes his monumental 5TH FIGHTER COMMAND IN WORLD WAR II history with the 2014 publication of VOLUME 3: 5TH FC VS JAPAN; ACES, UNITS, AIRCRAFT AND TACTICS. Wolf's three-volume history probably sets the bar for unit histories, encompassing, as it does, over 1,300 pages of text and thousands of photographs and illustrations.
Whereas the first two volume presented a detailed, day-by-day history of 5th FC ops, VOLUME 3, a 2014 Schiffer release, supplies a backdrop to that story, providing details on top 5th FC pilots/aces, 5th FC units and aircraft such as the P-40, P-38 and P-51, Japanese aces/aircraft, tactics, airfields, pilot training, awards and decorations, victory claims, etc. While not as exciting as volumes 1 and 2, this third volume is important in providing the context for all those 'turning-and-burning' dogfights.
The book is illustrated throughout with vintage photographs, maps, diagrams and charts along with some drawings of 5th FC fighters by Steve Ferguson.
Wolf is certainly to be congratulated for his research and writing efforts. THE 5TH FIGHTER COMMAND trilogy tops off at 1,304 pages and will stand as THE definitive work on this legendary unit. Highly recommended.

Also an excellent resource for air museums and libraries

In addition to being an essential book for people who have read the first two volumes of William Wolf's in-depth study of the 5th Fighter Command, I would also recommend the third and final volume as an excellent resource for air museums and libraries. That is because, in addition to concluding the history of the 5th Fighter Command, this book also includes extensive supplementary materials that provide a great introduction to general interest topics for people learning about World War II aviation. I particularly liked the chapter on air combat maneuvers. That section is nicely illustrated, with the explanatory text being integrated within the graphics in an eye-catching way.
