Highly recommend for realistic bird carvers. Excellent illustrations!

I would highly recommend this book for realistic bird carvers especially for miniature carvings. The illustrations and explanations are Great. There are several useful patterns with multiple head positions for some. A well writen and illustrated miniature bird carvers guide.

Nice beginner book for carving

I really enjoyed this book. I gave it 4 stars because I believe there is a bias toward Foredom tools. I am a beginner in wood carving and may grow to appreciate the need for these expensive tools but at this time I am using my Dremel with a flex shaft attachment and it seems to be working great. The book does a very nice job describing the different bits he uses and how they can carve the features to create the songbirds. Using this book and "Carving Realistic faces" I gained a new understanding of carving and it really helped when I started carving my butterfly.
The book is designed to take you through the carving of a bird. It starts with the accessories and then wood choice. It takes you through feathers, eyes and beak. It talks about painting and brushes. It finishes with examples and patterns. I believe this is a perfect book for a beginner.

Great book!

This is a beautifully detailed and very comprehensive book. As you can see by the cover, I do not believe the bird patterns are necessarily anatomically correct as to the exact number of feathers, etc, so if that is important to you, you might try something like the Daisey books instead. There are numerous patterns here though and they make up into lovely ornaments, gifts, and display items. Well worth purchasing.
