For the first time, this richly illustrated book offers a comprehensive, detailed examination of the legendary Messerschmitt Bf 110, Me 210, and Me 410 series. By 1935 the Bf 109 had made Messerschmitt the leading manufacturer of fighter aircraft in Germany. The twin-engined Bf 110 followed on its heels in 1936, a type the Luftwaffe took on in large numbers as a long-range fighter, heavy-fighter, fighter-bomber, night-fighter and reconnaissance platform. As its successor, Messerschmitt developed the better performing Me 210, which flew for the first time in 1939. But this airframe soon began manifesting serious design flaws, and accidents with the Me 210 quickly started piling up due to the types questionable flight handling characteristics. The Luftwaffe refused to accept any more aircraft as a result, and at a stroke the types overzealous full scale production ground to a halt. More powerful engines and a number of design changes saw this aircraft produced from 1943 to 1944 under the designation of Me 410, and as such the type gave an excellent accounting of itself in service with the Luftwaffe.

Nuts-and-Bolts Guide to Messerschmitt's Twin-Engined Destroyers!
By Mike O'Connor
Though there have been many books on the Bf 109's operational and/or technical history published, comparatively few volumes are out there on its twin-engined stablemate the Bf 110 or the follow-up Me 210 and 410 models. Fortunately, in 2007, Schiffer Books came to the rescue with this marvelous guide to Messerschmitt's family of twin-engined fighters by Heinz Mankau and Patrick Petrick.
First off, the 2007 release is a straightforward translation of Mankau and Petrick's MESSERSCHMITT BF 110, ME 210, ME 410, DIE MESSERSCHMITT-ZORSTORER UND IHRE KONKURRENTEN, which was originally published in 2001 by Aviatic Verlag. The English-language version is modestly subtitled AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY but I have to say I've never seen as many photos, profiles, three-views and diagrams of the 110/210/410 in any other book. There are hundreds of shots showing the development of the Bf/Me twin-engined destroyer concept, Bf 110 dayfighter/ground-attack/nightfighter configurations, different armament mixes including rockets, competing designs, production line shots, frontline pix, nose/cockpit/armament bay/engine close-ups, etc. Visually this is one impressive book.
The text describes the development of the Bf 110, its ill-fated Me 210 replacement, the still-born 310/610 variants and the more-successful follow-up 410 model as well as the competing FW 57, Hs 124 and Arado 240 designs that fell by the wayside. Much of the book is given over to model-by-model breakdowns of each twin. The Bf 110 section, for example, describes the Bf 110 V-1/V-2/V-3 followed by the A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H models. The Me 210 chapter looks at the V-1, V-5 and V-17 followed by the A, B, C, D, E-1, F, S-1 and S-2 models and so on. The various Jumo and DB engines that powered the twin-engines fighters are also summarized.
What's most interesting, to me, was the behind-the-scenes material on the attempts to create a 110 replacement and the growing realization that the Me 210 was an aerial dud. Messerschmitt's own test pilot, Fritz Wendel, is quoted as saying the 210 had "all the least desirable attributes an aircraft could possess." The failure of the 210 design meant that Luftwaffe units would have to soldier on with the aging Bf 110.
In short, Mankau/Petrick's book is a comprehensive and well-illustrated summary of the Luftwaffe's second-stringers. None of the Messerschmitt twins could operate effectively when faced by single-engined opponents. If such opposition was lacking however, they could do great execution against unescorted bombers whether they were USAAF day bombers or RAF night raiders. Likewise, the twins were effective ground-attack platforms as well. I would have liked more combat reports/pilot reminiscences but that's just me. In any case, Luftwaffe enthusiasts will want to snatch up this book. Recommended.

Definitive History
By guitar*man
Easily the best acount of the Me110 and its intended replacements. The story is interesting because the programme used such a lot of time and material resources.
Interestingly, the authors conclude that the Luftwaffe would have been better served by cancelling the 2 engined Me in favour of producing more FW 190.
Fantastic photos throughout. I agree with the other reviewer that pilot accounts would be interesting. A book with a Me 410 action is "Night of the Intruders" regarding attacks on US bombers over England.

Excellant Photos-Very Little Else
By Tony Marquise Jr.
This is an illustrated history of these three planes as well as a minor history of planes that other companies offered the Luftwaffe to fill the slots these planes were chosen for. There are numerous photos-and they are reproduced in excellant detail. However, this book only covers the hardware-the planes themselves. There is no coverage of the combats these planes took part in. Hence my three star rating.
