This massive, comprehensive volume is the first to give the reader a definitive description of this neglected bomber, its development, testing, and manufacture. The role of the enigmatic aviation icon Glenn L. Martin is described in the development of the American aviation industry and the Marauder. The author made extensive use of the massive document and photo collections of the Marauder Archives at Akron and Tucson, and the Air Force collection at the NMUSAF. Martin Company design and production information and flight and test evaluations, along with original Company Flight, Parts, and Maintenance Manuals, and rare archival microfilm of original material were also used. The author was given unprecedented access to the family records of B-26 designer Peyton Magruder. The text is complemented by archival photos and drawings, and new color photos of the Marauders at the NMUSAF, Fantasy of Flight, and MAPS Museum.

About the Author
Dr. William Wolf has written fourteen books and numerous articles on World War II aviation combat and is an avid collector and historian, having over 22,000 World War II books and magazines, three miles of microfilm, and thousands of photos in his library, along with numerous pieces of World War II aviation memorabilia and aces' autographs.

The Widowmaker Saga: Impressive Bang for the Buck

I have the author's volume on the North American B-25 Mitchell and the Martin B-26 Marauder. I prefer the latter by a fair margin because it is not so heavily focused on purely technical narrative, but instead has a lot of information (in comparison to the Mitchell volume) on the early operational experiences of the B-26. I think that the respective titles explain the reason why, as the author goes into detail on how the B-26's teething problems and design issues were resolved while the much more docile (comparatively speaking) B-25 Mitchell did not have anywhere near as many issues. As a result, this volume contains much more on the training and formation of the initial B-26 groups, to include how the 3d Air Force was exclusively dedicated to training medium bomber crews in late 41 and early 42. The training base had significant difficulties obtaining sufficiently qualified instructors while the units deploying overseas needed more experienced pilots to fly B-26s in combat. It was sort of a vicious cycle that wasn't solved until 1943. Although this volume is expensive, you get a large number of illustrations, color and black & white, in addition to 469 well-researched pages of text. One of the best volumes yet from William Wolf.

This book is the Rolls Royce of aircraft books.A very well researched and presented book . I will have to buy a few more books that this author has written. This book contains the most information on one aircraft I have seen to date. Most other aircraft , military and train books would cover the information in several volumes. Highly recommended

If you area modeler like i am

If you area modeler like i am, you dare not build a B-26 without having first reviewed this book in detail. Even if you're not going to super-detail the build, you'll learn so much about the real airplane (photos, line drawings, illustrations). I can't recommend it enough.
If you're an aviation historian like I am, this book will fill in a lot of blanks in your understanding of the development, construction, training and deployment of the B-26. Again, high marks.
However, if you're a casual reader, it might help to have taken weight-lifting classes. this is a big book. And, being Schiffer, it's not a well-edited book. I'm not talking about typos (few if any of those - clearly, Mr. Wolf used spell-check), but he's got some facts wrong (some of them painfully obviously wrong), and there's a lot of repetition and redundancy and duplications (). Captions cite planes as being from one era, when the national insignia proves it was from a later era (that's one example). Some dates are wrong, and historical facts surrounding the plane (but not necessarily about the plane) are wrong. Any aviation historian will know this and move on - and anyone who's not an aviation historian won't notice and probably won't care.
This is a huge book, well manufactured as is Shaffer's style, and has lots of period photos and illustrations (many from the pilot's manual) - plus lots of original color photos of museum planes.
Shiffer appears to be a step-up from a vanity press - they actually do market and promote the books they manufacture - but they appear to be only loosely edit the manuscripts, which is a shame. Any editor who knew something about the subject could have caught most of the errors.
But if you want to know a lot about the B-26, for modeling or history purposes, the bad editing shouldn't deter you from buying this book. If, like me, you do care about modeling and about history, you don't want to be without this book.
