This book describes the procurement, operation and technical aspects of the legendary Messerschmitt Me 109 in Swiss service during and after World War II. The aircraft and its procurement during the 1930s and 1940s are described in detail, as are the internal quarrels and errors in planning. The Me 109G Gustav is extensively discussed, and a chapter on camouflage paint and markings will be of special interest to modellers. The book also contains nearly 450 mostly unpublished photographs, including colour. Georg Hoch was born in 1943 in Zurich, and was an instructor in the Luftwaffe. His specialties included aircraft armament, structure, and war repairs.

Masterful, sweeping history of Swiss neutrality during WWII

Schiffer books on aviation history have always been scholarly, albeit dry
dissertations on aviation history. Georg Hoch has opened a colorful
(literally) chapter of aviation history with his comprehensive volume
on World War 2 Switzerland and fierce protection of its sovereignty.
He details the negotiations with Germany as war clouds were looming;
there were obvious sweetheart deals between German and Swiss
corporations that heavily favored German warplanes. This favoritism
did not translate into tolerance of German incursions.
Germans had no compunctions in firing at Swiss aircraft and even ran
missions with the intent of punishing Switzerland. Hoch is less detailed with American encounters. There have long been rumors that war-
weary bomber pilots intentionally headed for Switzerland for intern-
ment. The issue is left hanging, as he does nor discuss American airman
de-briefs.
This love-hate relationship between Germany and Switzerland persisted
through 1944, when the Swiss needed to upgrade their fighter inventory.
The Bf-109G was chosen, and after a long wait, the fighters arrived. There were immediate mechanical failures, and the Swiss were left wondering if there was intentional sabotage. The issue is again left unanswered, as there were other reasons for German quality fall-off: the use of unskilled slave labor was one reason. Also, attrition in German A/C was less than thirty hours; reliability was an unnecessary
luxury.
There are copies of aircraft erection manuals, technical studies, failure analyses, almost enough data to re-build a Bf-109 D/E/F/G. He discusses Swiss aircraft markings, and it is possible to duplicate nearly all Bf-109's in the Swiss inventory. The 16 pages of color artwork and photos is beautiful.
Georg Hoch's work is truly impressive. I read this book in a single sitting. It was that rivetting. This book is still available in quantity at Squadron Shop (Texas) and Edward Hamilton (Connecticut) at substantial discounts.
