A massive photo archive of German Army Shoulder Boards

I have been collecting German Army artifacts of the Second World War for twenty five years, and one area of specialization has been original Shoulder Boards. This book is a great addition to the growing set of publications specializing on the minutia of World War Two German Militaria.
The book has great photos of original items. The authors are to be congratulated for their unwavering commitment to not depicting potential reproductions in their work.
However, I find that I will be consulting Angolia's "Uniforms and Traditions of the German Army 1933-1945" more often than this masssive photo archive. This is based simply on the ease of handling and finding the specifics for each shoulder board under consideration.
The price is steep, dictated by the specialized area of collecting pursued by the authors and publisher. Most new Schiffer books are of the same manner, photo coverage of an extensive collection supplimented by other collectors submissions.
If there are any real short-comings, it lies in the area of itentifying and recognizing reproductions. The authors do address the concerns of reproductions, and excluded any examples they could not agree upon. This is only a partial measure in a field of collecting rife with well made reproductions. They do not go beyound a basic explaination of the methods of manufacture and characteristics of orginal shoulder boards. It would be better to have shown and discussed the war-time construction methods and materials verses reproductions. While many moth-eaten examples are displayed, the authors do not show a dis-assembled enlisted, NCO or Officer shoulder board to educate the new collector to the basics of original WW2 German army shoulder boards. The nap of the wool, the base of the tresse or bullion loops, the card board backing, the button holes, and the stitching are not covered in any detail. All are cructial in consideration of the originality of German Army Shoulder Boards. All the more important given the post-war German Republic and German Peoples Republic both continued to use similiar items up to the reuninfication of Germany in the 1990's
Still a good book worthy of consideration for those seeking to concentrate on this limited field of collecting. Just beware, as the market is overflowing with high quality reproductions for reenactors, collectors and dealers seeking to make a buck. This book, itself, is a small step in addressing that aspect of the hobby.

Fantastic

I waffled back and forth trying to decide if I wanted to spend the money for this book. After all, how many pictures of shoulder boards could be in one book and how many do I want to look at? Finally decided to go ahead and boy am I glad I did. This book is fantastic. Good clear detailed photos covering all kinds of shoulder boards. It is a big book. Thick glossy pages. Captions explaining the boards and photos are included. But the book is not limited to just that. Excellent photos of collar tabs and a bunch of excellent photos of Waffenrocks showing the should boards, collar tabs and other decorations. If I had one complaint (and it is really not a complaint), it might be I would have liked to see more photos of the shoulder boards on the Feldbluse. Now, don't get me wrong. The pics of the Waffenrocks are excellent and are very interesting. I highly recommend this book. It is well worth the money and I wish I had bought it before now.

I highly recommend this book

This book is fantastic. It has clear detailed photos covering all kinds of shoulder boards. The captions are very well written and make it easy to understand the boards. The authors have done an outstanding job writing this book. This book taught me so much about the uniforms during WWII. I highly recommend this book. It is well worth the money.
