The Encaustic Evolution

This is a beautiful presentation of some of the many artists who demonstrate the role of encaustic painting in contemporary art. The fascination with encaustic – with its association to ancient art, its revival after centuries of obscurity, its opulence, versatility, and metaphoric implications – has led to periodic documentations of how encaustic is being employed. Encaustic Art in the Twenty-First Century assumes an important place alongside Pratt and Fizell's Encaustic: Materials and Methods (1949), the Montclair Art Museum’s Waxing Poetic: Encaustic Art in America (1999), and Joanne Mattera’s The Art of Encaustic Painting (2001) in showing the continuing evolution of this medium.
