This book covers the complete development history of those variants of the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 powered by inline engines. The first Fw 190 equipped with a Daimler Benz liquid-cooled engine took to the air in early 1942, followed six months later by another powered by a Jumo 213. Production of the Fw 190 C, Fw 190 D and Ta 153 was delayed by the German air ministry. Not until 1944, by which time Germany had lost control of the air, did the Fw 190 D-9, an interim fighter powered by the Jumo 213 A, enter production. The Fw 190 D-9 proved an immediate success, largely due to an excellent prototype test program under Dipl.Ing. Hans Sander. The type quickly entered service with the Luftwaffe and more than 1,700 examples were completed by the end of the war. The Fw 190 D-9 gave rise to a number of improved variants with the more powerful Jumo 213 F engine and a heavier armament, however only a handful of the D-11 and D-13 versions were completed. With a maximum speed of 750 km/h, the Fw 190 D-12 powered by the new Jumo 213 EB would have represented the apex of Fw 190 development.The proposed Fw 190 D-14 and D-15, both powered by improved versions of the dive-bombers 603, came too late to see service with the Luftwaffe.

Very concise series...

Everything you might want to know about production bugs and triumphs involving the Fw-190's development from the "A" model all of the way through to the Ta-152,(this particular book covers the "D" version), is in these three books. I bought the whole series on this plane from this author and have not regretted my investment.

Peak of Piston Engine Fighter Development in WW2

The Germans created the Me 109 in the 1930's, the FW 190 in the 1940's. While these were excellent aircraft, the Germans knew they needed to continue airplane development, especially a higher altitude. This book the FW 190 Long Nose covers that story.
Really, the the FW 190 Long Nose is a different airplane than the FW190. There were delays caused by perfecting pressurized cockpits, Allied Bombing, lack of priority in which plane to build and especially engine development for high altitude and horsepower.
This book gives a great narrative of this history of this plane, excellent black and white photos, the varients that were planned, problems the engineers ran into, cannon that were to be used. There are line drawings, copies of orginal German documents, statistics, data, and even six pages of color showing the camoflague patterns. (I wish some of the data had been translated from the German).
1,700 of these planes were built. They were the equal to anything the Allies had, but as with many German ideas, came too little too late to change the course of the war. I definately recommend this book to anyone seriously interested in German Aviation, late war fighter development or aviation buffs.

Good Pictures-Not Much Else

I was disapointed by this book. I thought this book would be as complete a history as possible of possibaly the best fighter produced for the Luftwaffe in World War II. This book gives a good history of the design history of this plane and does have many photos of it, but almost no history of the combats this plane took part in. Also, some of the performance charts of this plane are reproduced in German with no translation. I cannot recommend this book.
