Russia was far from a monolithic structure. It contained numerous diverse ethnic groups, many of which had long histories of resenting Russian suzerainty and domination. Combined with the long standing hatred of Russia, the new Soviet regime was often even more hated, even by the Russians, so when the Germans invaded, their initial reception was often one of the liberator rather than one of conqueror. In the fall of 1941, as Hitler visited his East Prussian headquarters, he was approached by General Erkilet of the Turkish General Staff, who urged hm to intercede on behalf of the Soviet POWs of Turkic nationality. Hitler, hoping to recruit Turkey as an ally, was sympathetic. He granted permission in November, 1941 for the formation of a Turkistani Legion. Before the end of the year three more ethnic legions were formed. An OKH order dated 12 December 1941 formed the Caucasian Moslem Legion, Georgian Legion, and Armenian Legion. Later, the Caucasian Moslem Legion was split into the North Caucasian Legion and the Azerbaijani Legion. In mid-1942, the Crimean Tartar and Volga Tartar Legions were raised.
There was also the Sonderverband Bergmann, a Caucasian unit formed by Admiral Canaris in December, 1941. It was recruited from Georgian, Armenian, Azerbaijani, and other Caucasian POWs built around a cadre of like ethnic pre-war anti-Soviet emigres living in Germany. The original intention of the Sonderverband Bergmann was one of a fifth column to be parachuted behind the Soviet Army but so many volunteers appeared, that it was quickly organized into a two-battalion regiment. These two battalions were thrown into the lines on the Eastern Front and were soon exhausted by casualties.
With their homeland split between the Russian (later Soviet) Empire and Turkey, the Armenians were one of the most repressed ethnic groups in the world in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. An estimated 20,000 Armenians from the Armenian S.S.R. joined the German military establishment, either during the Autumn, 1942 German advance into the Caucasus or after becoming POWs. During February, 1945, the Herr Armenian Legion was transfered to the Caucasian Waffen-Verband of the SS, becoming the Waffen-Group of the SS-"Armenian." Between 2,000 and 3,000 Armenians served with this unit in northern Italy until the end of the war.
The center of the Armenian Legion was located in Pulava under the leadership of Drastamet Kanayan. The established aim of the Armenian Legion was the restoration of Armenia's independence from the Soviet Union. In the fall of 1942, the Armenian Infantry Battalions 808 and 809 were formed which was followed by Infantry Battalions 810, 812, and 813 in the spring of 1943. The Infantry Battalions 814, 815, and 816 were formed in the latter half of 1943. Besides these battalions mentioned, there were 22 construction, railway, transport, and other subdivisions formed from Armenian POWs. They served in the German Army but didn't participate in combat operations.
These battalions together with other indigenous Caucasian units were attached to the Infantry Division 162. Also attached to Infantry Division 162 were the Field Battalions II/9, I/125, and I/198 which were formed between May, 1942 and May, 1943. Altogether 12 Armenian battalions served in the German Army, if Battalion II/73, which wasn't employed at any time, is to be included. Most battalions were commanded by Nazis Armenian officers.
Author Levon Thomassian has now written what one would call the definitive book on the subject of the Armenians in the German Army during World War II. Titled, SUMMER OF '42: A STUDY OF GERMAN-ARMENIAN RELATIONS DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR, Thomassian has skillfully managed to seperate fact from fiction and give both a balanced and well-researched account on a subject that has had its share of falsehoods and misconceptions. The author goes into great detail covering all aspects of this unit and leaves nothing out. The appendices add further information that the reader will find both fascinating and helpful. The many photographs only enhance this book's importance. Add to this the extensive works cited in the research and writing of this book, you would be hard pressed to find anything to equal it anywhere in print today. Both the author and Schiffer Publishing should be congragulated for making this book available not only to students of World War II but also to individuals who want a better understanding of the different ethnic groups that fought on the German side.

Excellent book!

The subject of Foreign Volunteers in World War Two German Armed Forces has always been interesting but little know of. Levon Thomassian's new book Summer of '42 - A Study of German-Armenian Relations During the Second World War, brings us a brand new study on such subject. The author has done an excellent job in explaining and describing the German-Armenian relations, both before and during the war. The book begins with the history of short-lived Armenian Republic and briefly discusses the various political views in Armenian émigré community. The author further describes the relations of such émigré groups with the Third Reich officials and historical set up that led to the creation of Armenian volunteer formations.
The book provides a detailed description and history of the Armenian Legion, its creation and motives for joining the legion. From the study, we also find out about Armenian volunteers in Waffen SS, the obscure Kaukasischer Waffen-Verband der SS. An excellent study of this unit is provided, including all other nationalities form the Caucuses that formed the group. For a uniform enthusiast and foreign volunteer collector, the book shows photos of Armenian volunteer insignia, including rare set of Armenian collar tabs and shoulder boards.
Thomassian's work also touches on other very important issues that are often overlooked or simply omitted. The author discusses the subject of Turkish perspectives on the Armenian volunteers and does a detailed job in describing them and also dispelling some of the myths and biases concerned with the Armenian Legion. The book is a very easy read, straight to the point and the research conducted is supported with extensive bibliography. Levon Thomassian's book should be recommended to anyone with serious scholarly interests in the subjects of WW2, Armenian history and the foreign volunteers movement.

A well written book regarding the Armenian Volunteers in ww2

I have been studying wehrmacht volunteers for my whole adult life, but i have never found a book like this- regarding the Armenian volunteers and their almost unknown ww2 history.
Now we have a very good start with this quality book written by Mr Levon.
Instead for writing to much details i will rather be short and tell the amateur or professional historian out there to include this interesting book in their studyroom or collection. It is a wellwritten product, loaded with unknown details.
This work is of the highest quality, and absolutly deserve your fullest attention.
I hope Mr Levon will write more around these Wehrmacht freiwillige.
