In the years between 1940 and 1945, a total of approximately 12,500 Belgians served in the Waffen-SS, a number roughly equal to the strength of an infantry division in 1944. Because of political and social problems and different objectives of the volunteers, however, the men were not combined in a single unit, rather they were deployed in three different formations. This book describes the major units of the Waffen-SS in which the Belgian volunteers were concentrated, where they were deployed, and the battles they took part in. It also explains the reasons why the men served in three different Waffen-SS divisions.

Words like "courageous" and "honorable" are often used to describe Belgium in World War II, but there was another side to this nation's experience between 1940 and 1944. Although there was a Belgium government-in-exile in London, most of the government workers and King Leopold III remained in Belgium to run the country during the German occupation. However, the pre-war ethnic rivalries between the Dutch-speaking Flemings and the French-speaking Walloons added to the tenson.
The German invasion of the former Soviet Union on 22 June 1941 saw Hitler approve national legions from the occupied countries to take part in the struggle against communism. Belgium would provide two legions: one was Flemish and would be attached to the Waffen-SS while the second one was Walloon which would be attached to the German Army.
This Flemish unit would be considered Aryan and would be attached to the Waffen-SS. The political parties in the Flemish region of Belgium though were far from being united-some wanted independence, some a union with Holland, and others wanted to be part of a Nordic super-state. In an attempt to tap into Flemish manpwer, the SS-Nordwest volunteer unit was formed with both Dutch and Flemings.
By April, 1941, three companies had been raised. A number of German commanders didn't like the idea of a "Greater Holland" found in SS-Nordwest. In light of that, a more broadly based Flemish volunteer unit was established in September, 1941. It was renamed the SS-Freiwilligan Flanden and its strength was over 1,000 when it reported for duty at Radom in Poland.
In its first early actions, it was less than impressive but experience had shown that volunteers from Flanders could fight, and fight hard. It was withdrawn from combat in early 1943 and was later expanded to form the Sturmbrigade Langemarck with additional volunteers, a Finnish battalion, and some German artillery and support units.
It was attached to the Das Reich Division before being sent to the Leningrad Front where it tok part in the fierce battles on the Narva. In the summer of 1944, it was upgraded to become the 27th SS-Freiwilligen Grenadier Division Langemarch (flamische Nr. 1) even though it never reached divisional strength. At the end of 1944, it was assigned to the 3rd Panzer Corps and took part in Operation SONNENWENDO in which their attacks were stopped southeast of Stargard by a more powerful Red Army. Most of the division surendered at Mecklenberg while a small battlegroup took part in the defense of Berlin.
BELGIANS IN THE WAFFEN-SS by Rolf Michaelis is a well-researched and an in depth look at one of the units that supported Hitler's invasion of the former Soviet Union. The estimated 13,000 Belgians served in three different Waffen-SS divisions and the author does an outstanding job of relaying this unit's accomplishments and history to the reader.
