Dr. William Wolf has written fourteen books and numerous articles on World War II aviation combat and is an avid collector and historian, having over 22,000 World War II books and magazines, three miles of microfilm, and thousands of photos in his library, along with numerous pieces of World War II aviation memorabilia and aces' autographs.

Mammoth History of a Fifth Air Force Unit!

Of all the American air forces that saw combat in World War II, George Kenney's Fifth Air Force arguably had more impact on Allied victory than any other Air Force in any other theater. The cutting edge of 5th Air Force was the Fifth Fighter Command. In four short years, 5th FC went from a demoralized, bedraggled hodge-podge of units and aircraft trying to stem the ever-victorious Japanese to a top-notch, hard-hitting force that decimated Japanese airpower. William Wolf describes the creation, development and initial combat ops of the 5th FC in this highly-detailed, heavily-illustrated volume from Schiffer Publishing, the first of three volumes!
PEARL HARBOR TO THE REDUCTION OF RABAUL is a heavyweight, topping out at 448 pages and boasting around 700 photographs, diagrams, color profiles and maps. Wolf gets high marks for his research. His narrative isn't just a series of 'yank-and-bank' combat reports. Wolf does present such material but frames it against the backdrop of Allied military strategy in World War II, a 'Europe First' strategy that ensured 5th AF would be chronically short of aircraft and crews. He also details the conflict between Allied commanders in the Pacific over the direction the Allied advance should take and also provides insightful biographies of Allied commanders. And he includes material on the all-important development of Allied air bases that helped 5th FC and other units take the war to the Japanese.
The nucleus of Fifth Fighter Command was supplied by survivors of the fight for the Philippines, Java and the Dutch East Indies supplemented by stateside units/personnel hurriedly shipped to Australia. Initially equipped with P-39s, P-400s and P-40s, units like the 8th, 35th and 49th Fighter Groups fought for time. In September 1942, Major General George Kenney assumed command of the now-redesignated Fifth Air Force and he began the process of building 5th AF into a war-winning military force. Fifth Fighter Command, under Colonel Paul Wurtsmith, was soon playing a vital role in the Allied counter-offensive against the Japanese. New fighters such as the P-38 and P-47 and improved models of the P-39 and P-40 along with fresh aircrews including a young Wisconsin flier named Richard Bong began reclaiming the skies over Australia, Papua and New Guinea, all of which is related in Volume One of THE FIFTH FIGHTER COMMAND IN WORLD WAR II.
Considering this is a Schiffer book, I was pleasantly surprised by the small number of typos, missing words and miscaptioned photographs in the book. Photo quality ranges from poor to good; most pix fall in the fair to good category.
If there is a weakness in the book, it is that Wolf apparently wasn't able to obtain information on the actual losses the Japanese suffered in many of the air battles described in Volume One. In the book, most of the claims made by 5th FC and 5th BC crews for downed aircraft, sunken ships, etc. are given at face value but, in point of fact, overclaiming by both sides was common. PEARL HARBOR TO THE REDUCTION OF RABAUL would have been an even more valuable book if Wolf had been able to supply actual Japanese losses.
In his preface, Wolf claims THE FIFTH FIGHTER COMMAND IN WORLD WAR II is "the first comprehensive and definitive account" on the subject. I agree; I can't imagine anyone investing similar time and effort in such a project. And, while I might wish all the photographs had been PhotoShopped and that full and complete records of all Japanese losses had been provided, the fact remains that this project is an outstanding accomplishment and a long-overdue tribute to some notable American fighting men. In closing, I might mention that, because of the detailed text and the fact that Wolf recounts hundreds of air battles, PEARL HARBOR TO THE REDUCTION OF RABAUL is best savored a chapter at a time. Highly recommended.

Mighty Book Of The 5th

This is a great book on the 5th Fighter Command, and I enjoyed the detail and format so much.
You really can't beat the diary type format to get you through a war with ease.
I also liked the Profiles included, much improved on the more usual Schiffer efforts.
Mr. Wolf is to be much praised for this enormous work, and it should be on the shelf of everyone interested in the Pacific air war..
Volume 11 ordered, and awaiting volume 111 with anticipation........
