Good book on sniping, bad book on sniper badges...

If you are looking for a book to educate you about the much reproduced World War II German Army Sniper Badge, you will be greatly disappointed. There are four pages showing images of the three grades of sniper badges, three of which also knowingly display reproductions. No real discussion of the material and construction technics of the original badges and patches is provided. The title is misleading in this regard. This book really misses the target... not even close.
On a more positive note, this book gives a pretty good synopsis of the history of German sniping in the two world wars. The translation is not good, the editing poor, and the photos pretty good. The original paperwork on the sniper badge in award documents and soldbuchs is good to see. The sniper guidebook reproduced in the last pages is very nice.
This short (58 pages) and inexpensive (less than $20) book is not going to please the original insignia collector, nor those seeking to gain a true understanding of World War II German sniping. I will not return the book, but I would not recommend it either. I will also be much more wary of the future releases of these small books the publisher, Schiffer, is releasing in the future. If you want good information on the badge or German sniping history, then save your money and get a membership to the Wehrmacht Awards Forum or buy a copy of Peter Senich's book on German sniping.

Discliamer: this review is NOT by a colloctor of German memerabilia, but from a layman with an intreat in German military history. Hower I am an avid historian of military sniping and an active duty military sniper.
The "German Sniper's Badge 1944-1945" by Rolf Michaelis is an excellent pictorial primer on the German sniper and sniper badge (Scharfschützenabzeichen) of WWII. This badge was instituted on 20 August 1944 by Adolf Hitler in recognition of the individual German marksman with a scoped rifle trained as a sniper, and for appreciation of the successes of kills achieved while operating in this facet for German army and the Waffen-SS.
The book does an excellent job of outlining the employment and tactics of the sniper, as well as outlining the badge history, award criteria, and administrative logs and reports of sniper "kills." This book will not please the "diehard" collectors, but for the novice collector it is superb. Where this book will shine is for the individuals looking to get an insight into German sniping. This book provides an easy to follow distilled look into this realm that will appeal to military historians and the casual reader. There are definitely better books on collecting German badges and on German sniping but none cover the salient points so clearly like this book does, which makes it ideal for the layman and casual historian. Overall I love the whole concept and format of this book and cannot wait to get my hands on the authors other books in this series and in particular "The German Anti-Partisan Badge in World War II" book which I have already pre-ordered with rest of the books in this series.
